I just wanted to thank you for these three videos. I had several "aha!" moments while watching them. Wonderfully clear presentation with virtually no hesitation, ums, ahs, or tedious repetition. And altogether you made it look easy enough that I'm strongly encouraged to have a go myself. I'm very impressed. So, thank you.

I completely agree. For the life of my couldn't find a resistor. I don't understand when you type in 'resistor' it doesn't show a resistor. However if you type in 'r' it finds it no problem. Very informative, slow, and easy to follow along. Can't wait to try out my new circuit board printing machine! Thanks! PS: Did you actually get the board printed? Wouldn't' mind seeing it.

Thank you so much - I have gone from zero to ordering my first batch of boards in 1 day. A few issues using KiCad 6 version that was different but I muddle through and am pretty happy with myself. Looking forward to future videos.

Thanks! Great starter tutorial! The UI of KiCAd and Eagle are NOT user friendly so a video like this was invaluable for me when switching from etching myself to getting some printed boards. A few points for others though: 1) This is an old version and a lot of the buttons and functions have changed. 2) The symbol libraries are totally different now and much larger. 3) There IS NO AUTO TRACE anymore. It was dropped from the program so you either have to lay out the traces yourself or you have to find a way to add a auto trace program as a plug-in. This is definitely possible, but it may be easier to just lay it out yourself depending on the size of you board. The buttons and functions and such may be different but it is also more streamlined as well as better looking/running now. Didn't take me too long to figure out the new way of doing the things in the video but I had a hell of a time looking for the auto button! lol

I've look all over for a good beginners guide to KiCad and couldn't find any until I came across your site, and I must say your presentation is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you for taking the time to explain. One question though; What if you want to make the circuit yourself? How do you go about printing it out and adding a logo of some sort?

I really appreciate your videos and have purchased KICAD based on how helpful and well you demonstrate the use of KICAD. I found it really easy to draw the first schematic, however, when I go into PCB mode I have problems with the wire not connecting to the component. So the components cannot be connected. It seems like the wire is sticking to the mouse cursor. I would really appreciate any advice or even a youtube clip on how to resolve this issue. Again, thank you for your fantastic videos.

Nice job, but one comment: NEVER place the component designator, e.g., 'P1', 'C4' inside the part outline. You (or another technician) will find it very difficult to work on if the designators are not visible, I.e., under the parts. Otherwise, pretty good tutorial. Thanks.

Very nice video. However, my old eyes had a hard time with the black screen parts. It has me convinced that Kicad is for me - much better than a pencil and eraser. Just one thing that I noticed on Part 3. After the autoroute (7:51) some tracks were green and some red. Obviously the green on one side and the red on the other. But why are there some red tracks when those red tracks do not cross over a green track? I do not see this as a problem, merely a curiosity.

Thanks for the video. Really great tutorial for beginners. Can you please let me know how to place a component at a exact location on the board defined by some co-ordiantes with respect to a origin. Also how to give a custom shape to the board (non-rectangular) with curves and splines. Thanks again :)

nice set of videos. ive been curious about kicad for a while now. seems like a winner to me. One thing id like to see or know, is there a way it can do a simulation of the circuit or is there perhaps another program that could handle the kicad files to do so. ?

Hi Jason. I went to the Kicad site and downloaded the recommended build (4.0.6) for my Windows 64bit OS, installed it and it worked until I tried to use the PCB layout tool. It then reported that the netlist was empty when I new it definitely was not. I downloaded the old stable version and tried that one and it worked perfectly! Have you tried V4.0.6 at all?

Jason, I would like to know if there is a way to tell the size of the PCB in Kicad?I've been enjoy your other video's and hope you will be making additional videos in the near future. Thanks for putting out some great and easy to follow tutorials.

+Sal C At the bottom of the KiCad window you'll see an X and Y coordinate. Those coordinates are in inches or mm depending on what you've selected from the left hand button bar. You can subtract these numbers to get the dimensions of your board. The other way is to just upload it to OSHPark and they'll tell you the dimensions after you upload it.

+Sal C - In PCBNew, use the "add dimension" tool (looks like an "N" with two arrows under it). then click anywhere in the drawing, move the mouse, and click again. It will draw a line and show the distance between the two ends. Remember to select a layer where you can draw (ex., Dwgs. User)

Hello, thank you! Great work. I just have a problem when i run the current netlist there is a lot of errors showing in the little box. 3 different errors - "Error: Component 'Q4' footprint 'TO-92' was not found in any libraries in the footprint library table. " -"Error: Component 'Q4' footprint 'TO-92' was not found in any libraries in the footprint library table. - "Error Cannot add new component "Q2:/56D720CF" due to missing footprint "TO-92". Please let me know what should i do as i am doing a project for my Uni work thanks!

How do those traces cross each other in the same layer? There are some traces crossing each other here. Btw, thnx for this series. Very useful

+Sai Prasad Rm Glad you found the series useful. I think the traces you are referring to are not in the same layer. All of the green traces are copper runs on the bottom of the board and all the red traces are on top. The autorouter placed these on the top and bottom automatically.

Jason thank you for tutorial, I was wondering why there is not a power and ground rail on the circuit board ?, and when I place component on schematic like LM555, they are missing ground and power pins. Thanks

+transformer889 When I use the battery component, most of the time I don't need the ground or power pins. It just doesn't matter. However, when you start using some of the IC chips in the library, they may require power pins. Sometimes the stock IC chip symbols are wrong or at least misleading when it comes to what can be connected to them. I would edit the 555 pin that is giving you the problem. By right clicking and editing with the library editor, you can right click on the offending pin and change the electrical type to "Passive". Another option is just to make sure the Pin has the proper electrical type for what you are trying to accomplish and then connect the proper power flag/pin to it. The second option is probably the right way to do it, but most of the time I'm in too big of a hurry for it to matter. Hopefully this is somewhat helpful.

Hi. At 10:45 you select the solder masks but you did nothing with them throughout the video. Do any modifications have to be made? This is my first PCB. I have the gerber files and drill file ready to go! Thanks for these videos!

javier v. Hi Javier. No modifications need to be made. The solder mask just needs to be generated to tell the manufacturer where to expose and not expose the copper pads. When you select those boxes, it's automatically done. Congratulations on your first PCB. I hope it goes well for you.

hey, can you tell me how i can do the automatic routing to only one side ? i checked the design rule section but the least option available is 2 sided so is there any way for single side routing ?

Awesome Videos man. Really helped me out!! 1 question though, I'm sure someone has an answer for me... After I ran PCBnew to make my copper pads. When I was reading the "netlist" I got a number of error messages in the message box. The message read this; Error: Component 'U1' pad 'VI' not found in footprint 'Transistors_OldSowjetAera:OldSowjetaera_Transistor_Type-I_BigPads' I got a total of 7 Error messages similar to that but for different components. It looks like all of my components were carried over. So I'm kind of confused... Does that just mean I should go back to CvPCB and choose different footprints? or Is this just KiCAD having a "blonde moment?" Thanks Nick!!

Nick VanDoorne Could be the way the pads are named. You could double check the pad names are consistent between the schematic and the footprint. I saw another person have a similar issue.

Thanks for your reply. I double checked all of my names. I don't think that is the issue. I exported my schematic to TopoR to try and help with the routing. It got it alot closer. But again there is a number of pads that I can not connect traces to.. I'm going to try different footprints for those components. But it doesn't make sense because I used the same footprints with other components and I was able to run my traces to those components. I had no issues when I performed the ERC and I have annotated my schematic.. Confused.

Dumb question: With the footprints is the perspective from above or below the component? I assume it's the former, but I'm having allot of trouble finding the right footprint for the 2N3904 transistor.

+Ball Sack - The footprints are generally not specific to component modules (i.e., there are 4 or 6 transistor footprints with slightly different sizes, and you just pick the one that fits your design). Just use a generic NPN CBE transistor in the schema (ex., Q_NPN_CBE), and then pick any footprint you want in Cvpcb, based on size / shape. Or you can create your own with specific measurements (but remember to save it in a separate library; don't overwrite the standard ones, or you might have some problems later).

Please help When press the "read current netlist" tab I get a list of errors stating missing footprints but I have added them all as per video.

In the latest version of KiCAd, after running CvPCB you need to go back to Eeschema, the schematic editor, and generate a new Netlist. See if that clears up your problem.

javier v. also, (this is a tip i got from another video)... before plotting the gerber files, go to Tools > DRC (design rules check). Click Start DRC.

javier v. The only time I mess around with zones is when I need to lay down a large ground plane for a circuit. Other than that, I don't use it much.

Hi, I am new in pcb design. i am facing the problem of generating the gerber file it shows like uploading failed, for what purpose it shows the error. can u help me.

First, it will not just be one gerber file that is generated. There will be many. Second, you need to put all these files in a zipped folder before you upload them to OSHPark. Also, there may be an option that needs to be checked before you output the gerber files. I don't have the software on this computer, so I'll have to check later.

When you are in the Plot window, make sure that the Plot Format drop-down selection in the upper left has Gerber selected.
