I can't believe I found a logic tutorial on live loops where the musician actually played real music, like music that was not just techno groove. This was so useful, informative and inspiring. Thank you.
What do you guys think of the new feature? I'm stoked to find new ways to incorporate it into my workflow, but I think it's gonna take some getting used to!
Nathan Larsen Music can you assign drum pads to each loop in a grid (e.g. ableton push)? If so there is so much potential for this to be used in live performances
I see it beneficial in so many ways in both pre and post productions. Then you Automate the Remix plug in on your master bus... 🤯 Crazy Update all around!!
I’ve been using Logic for the past decade and was really considering Ableton Live for running click tracks/stems during live performances. This video and logic just saved me countless hours of having to learn a new DAW! 🙌🏾🖤
Hmm, I was hoping to justify opting out of purchasing Ableton too when I heard about this update!- But Nathan said in the beginning of the video that he didn't think this would be really as useful for live performing as the name 'Live Loops' suggests... Thoughts as to why?
I don’t see why it couldn’t be used live. I am also in the considering Ableton camp but much prefer NOT to have to switch DAW for live performing if possible
dug your explanation....i've gotta say once i turned on to ableton many years ago working in a linear only DAW seemed less than was needed to produce...creating scenes or sessions before building them into an arrangment just made composition so much easier. logic have played nice catch up....meaning that opening logic now as a DAW is almost fun cf ableton.....not quite...ableton's special but for older users of logic and new users who've never used ableton ....this has to be some serious mojo to want to sit for hours at a time crafting music.
Great tutorial, I have been wondering how the heck to use live loops for live performance and it’s a shame there isn’t an easy way to do that. Could be a whole lot more useful if Apple developed it more.
This is great content, thank you for doing this. The Live Loops feature has been puzzling me for months, now I feel confident that I know enough to start using it.
Great work, Nathan. Thanks for helping me wrap my head around Live Loops. I’ve subscribed and I will watch your instructional vids with interest but you don’t half make it hard to find YOUR music. I love what you did with the harmonies cell. Reminded me a little of Mike Oldfield. I guess I’d like to see how you recorded those voice parts into the same cell. And a link to your actual recorded music would be swell.
I sometimes have trouble adding B sections to songs because I'm afraid of ruining what I've got, so I think having this separate will help! Excited to try it out
Actually a great explanation. Thank you. Reminds a little of the 80's and the simple sequencers some synthesizers had then. They INSPIRED which I hope this will too. 🙂
Is there a way to use an external controller to control the loops like Ableton has the capability to do? Like can I live loop various instruments in real time and then turn off and on selected specific instrument loops? Perhaps even using logic remote on an iPad to control the loops?
Thanks a lot. I am a Logic novice and before that only used Cubase (in the nineties !). I thought live loops was all about using sample loops so wasn’t really interested. But this is great. The modular way of working is for me often how a piece emerges from my head, and this basically allows me to jam until I get the right arrangement and structure. Subscribed...
Do you know if you can overdub while recording continuously? Like if I want to layer guitars, can I do that in one cell without having to press stop and record each time. Thanks man!
Thank you! I've watched 4 different vids about the new live loops trying to figure out if you can play different clips from different lanes concurrently like in Ableton and NO ONE talked about it. They kept just playing one lane at a time. It was infuriating. haha. You answered my question at 11:27! Yes you can jump around and play different clips from different lanes at the same time!
Been trying to figure out how to get them to start at the beginning at the same time. Seems they always start where they left off & I can't them to start at the beginning. It's driving me crazy
Man I love Logic taking on live loops but my god I would never use this in a performance, it's so temperamental, sometimes quantize doesnt work, tracks go out of phase randomly and for some reason DMD samples don't choke when they're triggered from cells. It's actually really disappointing how buggy this is
Great video! And one quick tip: if you press shift and select the cells you want to stop and press return they’ll all stop at the same time. You don’t have to manually select each cell. That should help make your workflow smoother
Hi there, similar to hitting shift + queue to play multiple cells at once, is there a way to dequeue two or more cells from playing, without having to stop the entire track? It seems like to would be simple, but I can't seem to get that to work..
Awesome man, I just found your channel. Actually you can play the cells at the same time with a novation type of pad just like in Ableton Live. I use Logic Pro X all the time for creating a lot of music and this feature is very helpful for composers and producers.
Hi man. It’s a really nice video , I just wondering. I’m about to buy the app , but do you think it’s work with Mac book air ?? (MacOS Catalina) version 10.15.4
to be honest, after producing acoustic music for years I switched to producing electronic music, started with reaper for a short while and moved on to ableton. session (loops) view were really appealing. now i'm looking back at those 10 years, it damaged my music more than anything. stop looping shit brothers. human brain is a pattern recognition machine and if you're not intentionally try to put them into a looping state of mind (like techno, house, psy) even though listener can't pinpoint what's wrong their brain tells them something is fishy. I kept calling people who were so opposite to looping music snobs but I understand them now. If you are looping make sure to automate many different aspects of your loops throughout the song in a very subtle manner. Not a constant change of the loop just subtle randomizations on many different part of the loop (pitch, timing, timbre etc.)
I agree with so much of this sentiment - hence why in the video I mentioned how I don't use loops - I will probably incorporate some of this stuff in my workflow - and I think there is gonna be a lot of upside to it but being creative is definitely 100% key or it does sound artificial
I just use loops to throw down a drum bit or bass as I create ideas or just at home to live jam to it when I’m by myself I like to just improvise and see what happens. Would prefer a bass or drummer with me but it’s not often possible
@@williamshaneblyth yeah totally get it, i don't have access to other musicians as well so I try imitate their mindset as much as possible often times trying to think myself as the bass guy, drums guy etc.
Nope, completely wrong - Its a copy of Ableton, so you have the hip-hop way of working and the traditional linear recording system. Each vertical coloumn is a section of a song. If thats not how it works then Apple have REALLY screwed up!!! Edit: Yeah, I was right: watch?v=848hAOYdEEk
every time I record an audio (like in his track stack), the new cell will rerecord the old one (really softly) but's it's not a clean recording. How do I stop logic from overdubbing in the new cell?
Thank you soo much. Now i totally get how this works. Just out of curiosity. How did you figure this out initially? I just want to know your thought process when a new software arrives, how did you manage to figure this out? 😂. How long did it take you to do so?
Do you find that quantize start works great for the playback but not for recording? No matter what I set it to, when I press record it starts at the beginning of the next bar. A bit frustrating because I'd like to have a bit more time to get ready!
hi buddy im completely new to Logic Pro and just want to record a live loop with some of the preset loops but I keep getting "no import source selected when hitting the record at the top next to the play button.😡 can you help?
Nathan - thanks, just started playing with this! I had a thought about your vocal stack issue. (not sure if you figured this out yet). I bet you could place them in the arrangement. Bounce in place as one track, then bring back into Live Loops and you would be able to start and stop them all at once...
This is the best explanation on this topic that I found. I like that you showed the recording workflow and don't just use loops like many others. This was very helpful.
Hi Nathan, I had a question...at :58 you say that there is a new column next to the tracks with mute buttons. I have LPX 10.6.2 and I don't see those same buttons next to my tracks in the Arrangement view. I do see this column at the right side of the LiveLoops view but not like you showed in the Arrangement view. Do I have to turn them on somewhere to see it in the Arrangement view? Thanks for a great video!
Ok, sooooo how do you use this feature but with having multiple songs, for example I have 4 different songs with different tempos and I want to use this sort of as a Ableton replacement. Do I have to load each Song individually up in logic or is there a quick way to cycle through my Live Loops so there isn't really a delay in changing songs? Thanks
Enable Performance Recording only works when you already have recorded your cells. But not while you're actually live looping. So how to record the whole process of your looping session for a RU-vid video f.ex.? Does anyone know? 🙈
Just an aside. It seems many online streaming platforms will not accept your work if it contains any samples that came from DAW libraries. I know Soundcloud will not accept it. That sucks for home producers who use a lot of MIDI. Is it true for all streaming/sales platforms? How do producers, especially of electronic music, get around it if you do not have the means to get someone playing real instruments for you?
Thx your Video . One question. Apple loop ( Software Instrument Loop ) once drop to track, they will lose their effect ., eq... so on. Is it possible to keep that effect which the same like pre listening ?
Great vid. I subscribed. One suggestion. Use a larger cursor. That way it would be easier to follow what you are doing without replaying everything. Cheers
I loved you for saying.. u dnt wanna use other people's sound.. u wanna create ur own... Any one who is watching this video if using readymade loops.. should stop making music..
I played with this on the weekend, in my loop window everything played perfectly as you demonstrated, loops came in on time etc ...however when I recorded what is was doing from the loop window into the arrangement window as per you demo, all the timing went out of wack! Am I missing something? A setting?
I can only see the track activation button in the live loops window. If I'm only viewing the tracks area, the tracks will be muted, and I have to go back to the live loops region to turn them back on. Anybody know how to show or hide track activation in the tracks area?
Thanks for the vid. Really helpful. One thing I don't get is why the cells can go out of time with each other. Thought it was a quantize issue, doesn't seem to be, unless each cell needs its own setting? Thoughts?
Is there a way to make the loop record end automatically after a certain number of measures, and automatically play back what was recorded? So if set to 1 measure, after one measure it will automatically stop recording and play back what you just recorded?
When you click on the live looping 1:18 it opens and there you can see the live loops in colors. But when I click on live looping it's empty. How did you get the arrangement into the live looping?
Have you tried recording a track stack? I want to be able to loop my drum kit which I usually record in an 8 track stack. I can record and drag into a cell but I cant record in the grid.
Every musician that loops there instrument on stage wants to know if this can replace our instrument loop pedal? Can we record into a cell while a beat or metronome is playing, then move to a different cell and add another loop without it stopping the song? And then can we move to a different cell that will change the tempo and beat to start an entirely new song?
So. They just figured out how Ableton has been working for ages? Something like that at least. Unfortunately not suitable for live use and midi triggering. Well. That’s awesome..
It is really cool that it’s finally in logic but yeah it is funny seeing one of abletons key features it’s had for well over a decade finally make it to logic 😂
It's great for live use if you have an iPad and the logic remote app, similar to how Ableton has the Ableton push. with the iPad you can get really hands on and toggle between cells etc. Iamamusicmogul has great video where he demonstrates a live performance with it.
Please tell me what the drawbacks in using this for live performance are? I have always thought the biggest reason was the load of library and size of the application vs Ableton and Reaper... I’m a Logic guy - not Mainstage - and would live to incorporate Logic in performance.
I’ve watched several vids explaining this, but you’re the first person who’s been able to help me understand how to use Live Loops with the Arrangement window. Thank you. Great lesson.
Nathan Larsen Music I’d been starting to work with live loops, but I wasn’t seeing how it was supposed to complement tracks and what the workflow might be. Funny how something can be explained so many ways, and then the right one just clicks and you’ve broken through another wall. Thanks, again.
For a while I don’t use “Logic Daw” But after this video my mind has changed so really it’s amazing feature that I need to use it in my music that Not present in most DAW . Thanks 🙏 bro
Instead of clicking on each scene is it possible to trigger the next scene with the press of a number on the keyboard that corresponds to the number of the scene?
Helpful video. Halfway through I realized this is basically what the Launchpad app does, less intuitively though and without being able to record into the cells. Laziness got the best of me and I'm just going to stick with that for now. Thanks though!
