Learn how to use manual override on your NOCO Boost GB40 UltraSafe Lithium Jump Starter to begin jump starting a dead battery below 2-volts. Find more helpful information at: Videos: / noco Support: no.co/support Shop: no.co/gb40
For what it's worth, if you have a completely dead battery then the the order of operations shown here looks to be wrong. First off, my battery was completely dead, which triggered the "reverse polarity" light indicator even when connected to the proper plus/minus terminals (confusing) which had me needlessly second-guessing my clamp placement. They should have a separate light indicator to signal a dead battery in my opinion. Second, if you press the manual override button AFTER connecting the unit's clamps to the car battery terminals as shown in the video, it will likely do nothing. Instead I had to press the manual override button to turn the unit on BEFORE I connected the clamps to the car battery terminals. Then it worked. They don't mention either of these gotchas in the above video, nor in the user manual. All the more harrowing for nervous users when the lights falsly indicate that you have "reverse polarity" and you have to turn it on before connecting. NOCO might want to at least mention this in their user guide for the next model.
You need to setup MANUAL OVERRIDE before connecting to the battery if it is stone cold dead. This worked 100% in my case first time. As it is described in the video hooking up first, it did not work, it never chased, no juice no nothing etc.... So override then hook up and start at your own risk!
Thanks. I connected red to red and black to black only for error light to come on. Manual just said switch the wires around which don't sound right. Couldn't manually override, but with your method worked.
I was having exactly the same issue. It would not go in to manual override when the battery was connected, but no problem when not connected. Just be careful you don't accidentally touch the cable ends together when in override mode. I have now annotated my user manual to remind myself for next time.
It worked! Battery was dead. Regular boost didn’t work. I looked at the comments especially Aaron’s and James’ - you do need to press the button for manual overdrive BEFORE connecting it to your battery. Also let it do its thing for a few seconds and also, if the battery has any corrosion near the terminals clear it off safely (I had a plastic comb handy so I used 😂). I am female and was able to figure it out. Now if I ever have this issue I know I can handle it 💕
Finally a clear explanation of this feature's proper usage. I have used this very unit from 2017 onward several times. It ALWAYS works. It is great product.
Am buying one in the morning. So if you hook up the clamps and the lights on the GB40 start going, that means I don't need to over ride the GB40 right? You only over ride when you properly hook up the clamps but the lights on the GB40 don't do anything?
@@americaisacontinent. if your battery has no voltage left, GB40 won't detect your car battery. In that case, GB 40 indicator light will turn on but the light won't move left to right. That's when you need to use manual override feature.
Brand new Acura MDX 2022 in garage winter time came out to start the car no electricity at all. Got this guy from an autozone real quick straight out of the box override gave it power and I pushed the start, started right up. Life saver.
Guess i should have read the directions. The manual over ride is what i needed to do to jump car, worked great on a battery that was very dead. Thank you .
My 84 year old dad tried this on his 22 year old Ford mondeo lol. It didn't work initially but the white light wasn't displaying to show it was delivering the charge. We decided to do a manual over ride (pressed it for 3 seconds- and the white light illuminated to show delivery of charge). He heard a small click from the engine which he recognised as a sign that it will work - fired her up and it started. I don't think you are supposed to use the override generally but I think his battery was to too low to detect. He's happy now 😂
Guess I should get my battery checked since I had to jump it twice so far, once normal with the boost already on. 2nd had to manual override since my battery voltage was at 5Vs. Definitely worth buying.
Online this battery states it can perform 20 boosts per charge. I boosted two mazda cars and it dropped down to 75% definitley cant withstand 20 boosts
My manual fuckin sucks and does not explain things clearly(and although this video is made for a different brand of jumpstarter it helped me out a lot. Kudos
Bought a GB40 a little over a year ago and when I needed it to get me out of a dead battery situation last night it didn’t work - granted it had been sitting in my trunk for months. Had to tow the car home. Gave the GB40 a full change overnight and tried again in the morning. Still no good. This is an 2018 Acura MDX. Not sure if I purchased a GB unit that’s just not powerful enough.
Thank God GB40 has this mode... my battery was very very dead, the other jumper couldn't detect it either, only manual override could have started my battery...
I have never ran into a scenario using my noco, even in minus temps or bigger batteries where it didn't detect the battery and ran the sequence when connected to the terminals. Since i didnt have a voltmeter, It automatically had me disconnecting and cleaning the terminals and still not working. It was very strange so I came to the conclusion that there was a safety setting or something I had never used on the noco or turned on by accident. Very strange that my battery was below 2V...but its good to know about the override as I have never encountered it. Either way, it worked like a charm!
Manual Override will not be active the next time the unit is powered on, but you can also turn off Manual Override by pushing the Manual Override "!" button.
When I was going through the steps, I forgot that my light switch was still on. It won’t work if there’s more power being demanded. The reason I have this particular problem is because my headlights always run and I get confused whether the actual lights around the car are on sometimes.
I got 2 of these. One for mom. Never has worked. Wouldnt even boost a skidoo. Not sure if thats because i didnt hook it up b4 turning on power or not. Lights have never chaced until i tried over ride. After i got my big booster and extention cords out!! It should say , hook up then power up !
Will the GB70 go into override automatically? Have tried using today and after the LED’s chase, only the first red LED is on in the charge cluster and the white boost LED is flashing. What does this mean? Too low a voltage in the vehicle battery?
i should of bought the gb70 " 2000" A / the gb 40 1000 a. seems to be too week when its -20 c and dosenth start my car 🇨🇦 all in all these things are well built and safe to use...!
Question if a purchase the GB 70 and I want to jumpstart a smaller car or a motorcycle go to do some damage to the motorcycle or the small car I’m trying to jumpstart or I will still be OK?
My car was standing still for 3 whole months after getting a brand new battery. I connected the clamps and turned the charger on, nothing happend. I then pressed 2 seconds on override and even though all the lights turned on in the car, i still couldnt get the car started. I then noticed that my charged was completely empited up after being on connected to the unit for 10 minutes. Is it possible that all (100%) charged battery emptied up in 10 minutes? What am i doing wrong? Im charging the battery again and will try this one more time later tonight..

Used it on my 2004 Acura TSX 4 cylinder this morning, the light was chasing once I connected it, but it just won’t start, probably due the time cold we are having and old battery, will the override help ?
If the LEDs were chasing, the vehicle's battery's condition may still require Manual Override, but you would need to remove a clamp from the battery first to stop the LEDs from chasing, then enter Manual Override as shown in the above video. If you need further assistance please contact NOCO Support directly on the NOCO website.
Any reason why when I used override and connected my car started honking?? I live in an apartment so I can't be having it honking while trying to start it..
This could be due to your vehicle's battery system. In some vehicles, when a previously fully depleted battery receives a spike in voltage it can set off the vehicle's alarm system. This typically only happens with completely depleted batteries, so it may happen when jump starting the vehicle using Manual Override since that feature is only needed when the battery is fully depleted, but likely won't happen in cases where you jump start the vehicle WITHOUT using Manual Override.
I have the gb40 ,so far works on petrol engines but no start on my 2.0 cdti vauxhall insignia ,maybe need the bigger noco but thought that the gb40 handled up to 3.0 diesel ,ah well
Is that another variant of the GB40? The one I have looks different. The power percentage display lights are round in shape and the plus is shown as a plus sign.
Your instructions suck NOCO in this video and the owner's manual. I almost forked out 250 bucks for an in home battery replacement. People who purchased this thing should not have to rely on the comments section for solutions. That's your job.
It can jump start 12V lead acid batteries, which are common for a wide range of vehicles including tractors. Yes, the unit can easily be charged at home.
Am buying one in the morning. So if you hook up the clamps and the lights on the GB40 start going, that means I don't need to over ride the GB40 right? You only over ride when you properly hook up the clamps but the lights on the GB40 don't do anything?
If the vehicle's battery was very low, you may have needed Manual Override for the jump start. For further assistance, please contact NOCO Support directly on the NOCO website.
Thank you very much for this short video. I'm glad I thought something must be wrong when everything was connected and the lights were not chasing. They looked cheer full enough but there should have been some reaction to hooking it up. And since this battery I'm trying to charge has been sitting for at least 6 months, despite being only 6 months old when it went to sleep along with the car, it was a pretty good bet that there wasn't a drop of anything left in it. You could sort of think of it as a Joe Biden battery.
Unfortunately the GB40 won't hold a charge, after the first year they hold a charge for 4-5 months, after that they begin to FAIL and need to be fully recharged every 14 days.. so as far as putting your NOCO GB40 in the trunk for emergencies, think again..
Lol... charge led's begin to "chase"? Confused the hell outta me until I realised what the hell she was trying to say! Maybe a better description would be to say the charge led's cycle or sequence from low to high (left to right). Imagine if there was no video I would never have figured it out.
Why doesn't the gb40 do this boost automatically, i was trying to jump start a diesel navara last night and it wouldn't start it was dark and the gb40 was 3/4 charged, i couldn't figure out why it wouldn't work. You guys need to make your jump starters absolutely fool proof - as in hook it up press on and start the car no other buttons to press, especially for the price you charge.
The Boosts require the vehicle battery to be reading at least 2V before it will put any power to the clamps. This is a safety feature built into the unit so that the leads are not always live when the unit is on, for safety. To jump start a vehicle whose battery is holding less than 2V, Manual Override is necessary to bypass that safety feature to still jump start the vehicle.
I've found the gb40 only good for petrol engines, wont work on a diesel even though they say up to 3.0 , no chance tried on numerous diesels ,1.8 upwards
I bought a NOCO GB40 for my tuned BMW F30 3 years ago, It didn't work well and I had to call help any time it stranded on the street. Thought NOCO wasn't good but it turned out GB40 is not enough for my tuned F30 although they said that it would work up to 4.0 litters diesel and my car is 2.0 diesel. I gave it another try and bought NOCO GBX155, just on that day my car accidentally got a completely drained battery, jumped start it with GBX155 and succeeded!
Product Sucks Ass and was £109, cheap £40 Amazon non descript brand charger does the trick, this shows no lights, does not overide as instructed on video and battery was started by a cheaper device, back to Halfords tomorrow!
Garbage. Used it probably about 4 times over the pass 2 years and will never get a under charged 4 cylinder car started. Would only work if the battery JUST doesn’t have enough to turn over the starter. Time to look for a different brand.
We're sorry to hear you've had trouble with your jump starts. Depending on how low the car's battery was, Manual Override may have been necessary for the jump start. Please contact NOCO Support directly on the NOCO website for further troubleshooting assistance.
We're sorry to hear you're having trouble.
