I learned 2 things about using an oil based pencil on top of wax. If you put color from an oil on top of wax, you will get streaks, like someone tried to scrape up the wax. I ruined it picture because of that.

As I just purchase a 120 set of Polychromos, this video has helped me how to lay down oil based pencils. I come from an oil painting background so the dark to light coloring is very similar to oil painting. Thank you so much for your informative video. Regards from Chicago!!

I think I'm an oil pencil lover..well I love my brutfuner square set.. I think I feel like I have a little more control with the color.. how much of the color I actually want.
@PamelasPassionforPencils
@PamelasPassionforPencils 2 года назад
The Brutfuners are wonderful pencils. I agree that with oil-based pencils, there is much more control of the color.

This was a nice tutorial. I have these pencils. In fact I have many brands of pencils. When I buy a new brand, I make a chart, etc. However, as I am coloring in my chart, I start missing my Prismacolor. I love Prismacolor. They blend so well. I do not care for oil based, but i do like my Pollies but not as much as Prismacolor. It makes you work too hard I have painted in oil and watercolor, beside colored pencil. Like you, I start dark to light, with my eye paying attention to the white/bright light. A lot of these oil based pencils are coming out with 240 pencils, which I like variety. They teach you patience! What's that saying.....it is not the act of finishing but the process of getting there which one should enjoy.

I love my Prismacolors too! They’re my favorite. I totally get it. I don’t usually pull out my Polys but I really enjoyed making this video. It does take a little bit longer but it’s very relaxing. 💕

I am interested in your comment at the beginning of the video that Holbein are wax based. Holbein themselves state that they are oil based. The japanese version contains oil, fat and wax. I have been told that the ones in the US are a different formula. I am not sure what has been changed and would love to be able to compare the two. I have a full set of the japanese-I am in Australia- and they perform more like Polychromos than Prismacolor except for the soft white and some of the pastels. I believe that the pastels must be mixed with the soft white pencil. What I am really noticing is that the Brutfuner square perform very like them. I described Holbein as Brutfuner on steroids.
@PamelasPassionforPencils
@PamelasPassionforPencils 2 года назад
I misspoke! I didn’t even realize I said that. I’m sorry! They’re oil-based! They are softer than Polychromos though so I don’t ever think of them being oil-based. All pencils have a ratio of oil vs wax and the Holbeins feel so much like a wax based pencil that I tend to forget.

So how is adding layers different from burnishing? I am a new learner.
@PamelasPassionforPencils
@PamelasPassionforPencils Год назад
Yes. You would need to add all the layers first then burnish at the end to blend everything together. You don’t want to burnish until you’re done laying down color.

I enjoy using a variety of mediums in my art which is usually of the type where I can and sometimes do frame. I usually sketch then use a variety of mediums. But I am confused, other than relaxation, what do you do with them ? Frame them? I would like to understand the appeal. I have pencils of every sort and bought a coloring book. Please understand I am not not being negative, but just trying to understand. I am intrigued by this, new to me, art form.

I have a full set of polychromos that I got for Christmas and I’ve yet to use probably because I’m used to wax and too expensive to waste but why do you put dark to light colors down with oils and with wax were instructed to do lite. to dark
@PamelasPassionforPencils
@PamelasPassionforPencils 2 года назад
I just found that dark to light with the oil based pencils gave me better results. You can do it light to dark if you want to. Try both and see what works best for you.
@tanyarobinson1146
@tanyarobinson1146 2 года назад
I find with oil base you should do light to dark. You will not see a light color ontop of dark with polychromos. That is why you won't see white polychromos on top of a dark color for a highlight, but you can for Prismacolor. It depends on if the pencil is opaque or translucent. So I was taught, dark with Prisma first, light with polychromos first.

Just wondering how you would color behind the wheel spokes to provide continuity in the side of the cart. Would you recommend using the darker brown and going over it with the lighter golds? Thank you for the wonderful tutorial, I'm learning so much. 😊
@aliciadanowski245
@aliciadanowski245 2 года назад
Why did you not color in between the spokes on the wheel, the top four spaces show the wagon wood, the bottom four are fine. I enjoy watching.
