Thank you so very much. My first car was a 1986 Toyota Corolla SR5 and it was a stick! I loved it! I bought a 2016 Toyota Camry SE. I was leary of using the paddle shifters but you made it so clear! Again thank you!!
It’s actually a pretty cool feature. You can’t really mess it up either.. it’s preprogrammed to shift up when or if you over rev to the point of potential damage. A real safe way to get a “feel” for a 5 speed without having to worry about burning your clutch out.
@@_BLUU_ If you are coming to a stop you don't have to downshift because the car will shift it down into 1st when you come to a stop(I do it anyways to get a little engine braking) but if you slow down you want to downshift at around 1100 - 1500 rpms depending on the car
@@Littlemineslaps im totally new to this mode the other day i was going down a hill and i down shifted and it felt like the car slowed down suddenly transmission had brakes(i didnt press the brake pedal)... is that normal or will it damage the transmission or engine?
@@j1mster3 From my understanding thts because the speed u were at was too high for gear u shifted to, so the car loses speed. I'm relatively new as well so I'm not sure if the brakes activate to prevent damage or if it's j wearing away.
Its funny that so many people overlook this wonderful feature in the Camry SE and other models, you can drive it like a manual, i do it every day, theres no hesitation when you are waiting for 3k to shift to 2nd, etc, if you leave it in ECO mode in Drive then you have that hesitation that causes a sensation (LOL)
I am old school now saw the buttons on my new 2020 se. I will now try it. Used to love Mazda rx7 manual back in the days. Now Toyota has come a long way. Thanks for the info helped a lot
Thanks for another nice video, Jeff! I really haven't played much with the paddle shifters in my Camry SE but need to do that. I just leave it in Normal Mode automatic which gets you to the highest gear it can for better fuel economy. Still sometimes a guy just wants to have fun, even without a clutch pedal! I like how Sports Mode shows you which gear you're in and you can watch the tachometer change when you choose another gear. Yesterday I was ambling along on a back road in Normal Mode at 45 mph and the tach was just 1200 rpm. That's an idle speed (choke)! No wonder the Camry gets such good fuel economy. I don't know what gear I was in but probably 6th. I need to go back and try that again in Sports Mode and see for sure which gear does that.
great demo toyota jeff; just got the 2021 corolla and can't wait to use the paddle shifters in them. will be a new and hopefully great driving experience.
Lmao yeah me three . I was like wtf is going on here then I was like that’s freaking awsome and a very good feature for people who can’t drive which is a lot of people
Lmao.same here.i thought I was tripping cuz the car kinda corrected itself and the steering wheel went stiff.ive been driving a 04 Camry for the past 5 years, just yesterday I bought a 18 Camry xse .huge difference
Great video!! Actually, EXPLAINING what you're doing, allowing us to hear the vehicle, and calling out the gear numbers. All the other kids video talk like their audience knows wtf they're doing.
Just got my 2019 Camry se a couple weeks ago and I’m loving it.. however coming from a 1999 Camry that I’ve been driving for years this one feels like a spaceship inside and it’s taken me a while to figure out all these buttons and what they do, I’m curious how to get the digital speedometer to come up in the center of the dash like yours I haven’t been able to figure that one out yet.
Use the arrows on the steering wheel to scroll through the info pages on the gauge screen. There should be pages for your tire pressures, time engine running, gas mileage/usage. It should be in the set pages all the way to the left.
Thank you for these lessons.. they are so impactful. But u knw wat, I love your Toyota Camry.. so much so that I wish I can have it. Thank you so much.
2 questions: What if you have to make an emergency brake while in the highest gear? (There's no time to downshift) so how much would that hurt the car compared to if it were in auto. Next: to go back to auto (S to D), does the car need to be in neutral/park or can I just switch between the 2 modes while in Highway?
It will actually automatically shift down when you braking (and you forget to downshift) and also shifts upwards itself when you reving too high. More like a transmission protection mechanism in all the cars with PS.
You can switch from D to S and S to D at any time you are driving, just make sure you don't accidentally shift into neutral or reverse while shifting it out
You did a downshift on paddle while braking and bringing car to a stop. But for what i know, downshift is automatic when braking is needed but you chose to do it manually which obviously was unneeded, but to conclude the up-shift(+) is always manual and downshift(-) can be automatic too.. Is that right sir?
Still confused about this. Do you only use paddle shifters in Sport mode or you can in Eco mode as well? Do you have to engage anything else say the brakes or accelerator while shifting or you just use them as you drive? There are just too many different explanations around this that it just boggles my mind.
It wont autoshift ( some do as a safety feature ) and will stay at high rpm but each gear does have a max speed and staying at redline without shifting for a long period of time can cause damage to your engine and transmission
Hi,Nice video,But can you please tell me while driving on automatic gear position, when we use the paddle shifters, how can we again disable the paddle shift function
I got a 2019 SE for a rental and I've tried sport mode a few times. I think I understand the upshifting at higher speeds, but the downshifting into lower speeds is what gets me. Lol. Do you downshift to reach lower speeds or do you slow down, THEN DOWNSHIFT??? Help me out
When using paddle shifters do you take your foot off the accelerator as you shift up or down as you would when driving a normal manual when you depress the clutch? Or just change away while still having the accelerator on?
So basically upshift when increasing your speed and downshift when decreasing your speed / coming to a stop..? I don’t know why I’ve had people tell me to downshift when I’m accelerating, what’s wrong & what’s right? 😭
Okay if ur in 5 gear and need to stop can you stop without hurting the transmission or do I need to down shift at a proper level to not hurt the transmission
it safe to go down to 1st gear when coming to a stop? I was taught to be in second when coming to a stop, then go to 1st to start going up the gears again after being at a complete stop
Hi Jeff, Why doesn't the car automatically downshift when you slow down or come to a full stop? I see that some cars do this... But my Camry doesn't... 2019 Camry SE.
I really enjoy more an automatic transmission, so my question is, this option it’s only for those who wants to drive like stick shift? I never use this option in my car.
No. Sport mode is automatic. You can drive in sport without using the paddle shifters. It only “turns on” when you press the paddle shifter. Automatic sport just increased the rpm and gives the car a more racing and fun feel.
When I use my paddle shifter and come to a light in 4 th gear and don’t down shift My car would shift it’s self back to 4th and I’ll have to shift it to 5th and 6th Should I down shift and not do this or don’t matter since it’s not a real manual engine
Hey Jeff I have a 2017 rav4. This video is really useful but I have a question for you. I know from my car that from Driving mode it starts at S4. Say I bring it down to S1 cause I’m in my neighborhood. If I were to bring it back to my automatic driving mode can I just move the stick to the right from s1 to Drive or I have to bring my s1 all the way back to s4 to Drive? Thanks.
When you accelerating can you up shift without letting go the gas pedal And when you decelerating what rpm should you downshift and should you apply brake or let the engine do its work??
1. Yes when your accelerating upshift with your foot still on the gas 2. This one is basically personal preference but a safe bet is around 2000 RPM and you should still apply your breaks when decelerating
When i tried it another day rpm went super high whenever i down shift. When i go to super slow speed i keep down shifting it to 1 it’s doing the same thing (rev up super high and noise)
In some cars there are buttons on the shifter instead of paddles. I do think some Toyotas have CVTs not sure which exactly though. They’re becoming a lot more common.
I just bought a 2015 Aurion Sportivo in Australia and when in S mode it of course automatically changes gear but at higher revs ie in Sports mode. So if you want to use the paddle shifters will you be overriding the S mode which automatically changes gear? There seems to me to be a conflict between the car choosing when to change gear and the driver choosing when to change gear by using the paddle shifters.
can someome help me about paddle shifters? im a bit confused whenever i drive to mountain areas "uphill" where I initially put it on D mode, and suddenly its a long uphill and its still on D mode and its starting to move slow, then i try to put it on manual mode, but dont know how or what gear should i put it in 2,3 or 4 because the RPM keeps inceasing and my car seems to slow down more. and I always end up putting it back to D lol about "downhill" I already know what to do.. thanks guys
Question sir, if your in the 5th gear and you need to step on a break for a little bit when turning, does it go back down to first gear? And shift again after you break? Thank you
I have a '16 corolla s plus with a cvt. I've always been hesitant to use the paddle shifters because I'm not positive how to properly use it. Are you supposed to let off the throttle before each shift, or make sure the drive train isn't under heavy load during each shift?
I agree with that. There was so much speculation about what that final episode would reveal though...it seemed like fun banter. I watched that show religiously...LOVED IT! Jeff
You have more control over speed and less actual brake use even in dangerous and or Hazardous situations! Notice how you keep speed steady in Sequential/semi auto compared to automatic. In auto you notice *oops 4 miles over the speed limit or even 12 miles over because if your like me I focus 100% on road. With passengers I’m the most boring.*
I have a 2019. What gear should I have the car in when it's in automatic drive and not in the "manuel". I feel like it's taking too long to shift when it's in let's say 5th or 6th gear on the automatic side.
Hi friend, One question, with the cvt car how do I drive in long slope down hill? using break is not good idea as I think. So how do I? In AMT we can shift to M and drive with first gear. But in CVT there is no M shift. Pls let me know.
Thank you so much! I've always wanted to use this feature but was so intimidated. But please don't hold a phone and record while driving that was super reckless for yourself and for everyone around you. Even if the road was very calm, that was very reckless.
I just got this car and Im not sure when to shift into sport mode. Am I supposed to go from drive mode then shift to sport mode while at a complete stop, or can I do it while driving?
