Point 1. There is no point at all in using boiling water.. Absolutely no reason that is needed at all. Point 2: In most countries Peat Pellets are now Coco Coir pellets and no longer contain any peat.

This is my first year using them, I got almost 100% germination. I got the 72 pellet tray and the 12. Put them on a heat mat in front of a window that gets sun 10 hours a day. It did great with corn, green beans, peas, a bunch of oregano, and an assortment of flowers. Also did a similar thing with actual peat pots and used sandwich bags to cover them.

Thank you for the video! First year for me in Ontario Canada with the peat pellets, newbie veggie gardener. Started last year with 2 containers for a few peppers and beans, (bought from nursery), they did well, now I have a raised bed for this year. I had a terrible year last year with fungus gnats which I think I inadvertently brought indoors with my plants. I used Miracle Grow soil and didn't know they're notorious for this. I'd put houseplants outside and re-potted them thinking I was doing a good thing, when I brought them back in for winter! Little did I know! So after researching I found these pellets. The boiling water is a good idea. I probably will try the larger ones next time round. It's only for me, so I don't need many. 👍

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN thank you, I just wanted to add that last night I did the boiling water on the small peat pucks by Jiffy, I only did 6 for now. When I added the water the water turned dark immediately from the peat and they almost fell apart! The outside 'netting' isn't plastic or netting as I imagined, it's kinda fragile. Maybe I added too much water, but I fished them out as soon as they inflated and had to scrape up the peat from container after draining water, adding it back into each puck! Learning curve!

I love these. My taproots each grow through the netting without issue, but I also still cut the netting away. I imagine you’re supposed to anyway, it’s only there to hold the peat together before planting.

I’m in zone 6b, I have all my hot peppers germinating In wet paper towels in baggies and in propagation tray, on top of a heat mat , I moved the seeds that germinated into jiffy peat pellets and have them in another propagation tray on top of a heat mat , they sprouted but haven’t yet sprouted in my peat pellets 😭😭😭😭😭 I am doing 24 types of peppers and have 100 hot pepper plants I think I killed lol. I am HOPING since I started germinating them March 10 and it’s now April 1, that maybe by April 30 they will some plant exposed. I’ve got about 40 tomato plants which are doing great in peat pellets … -------- I love your channel !!!!!!!!!!

I was just told by lady in the shop for (maybe it was just for peppers) that warm soil is more important for germination than light and that close intense light is perfect once it germinates. CONFIRM DENY? Thanks! Just planting pepper seeds today. Watch dozens of your videos!
@THERUSTEDGARDEN
@THERUSTEDGARDEN Год назад
Well light is always important as without it they plants get leggy. Plants should germinate into light with 24 hours. But warmth is what speeds up germination and that is true. A house at 65 degrees is perfect for germination. Warmer is even better for peppers. I start my cucumbers and squash in the small pellets every year. I put 2 seeds in each small pellet. You’ll have to up-pot within 2 weeks into a larger container. I start my seeds in front of my patio window, so that’s why I use these pellets. Trays take up a lot more space, and I find the small pellets to be very efficient in starting as many plants as possibly in a very small space compared to trays.

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN How much do you fill the tray? Basically much much standing water do you keep in the tray at all times??
@mrs.t7254
@mrs.t7254 3 года назад
@mikenkarie good question! I believe you only water them when the soil on the top of the peat pots is dry. If you touch the soil and it sticks to your finger, then it still has moisture in it. I wouldn’t let them sit in water all the time. Once they absorb enough water that the tops of the soil is wet you can empty it if there is still a lot in there, but unless you’re using way too much water, they should just absorb all of it. Another way to tell if they are dry, is that the soil color will be lighter than when it is wet. And also heavier wet than dry.

General rule, if planting outdoor. 8- 10 weeks, start indoor seedlings, before estimated last frost. Introduce plant to outdoors, in at night, out in day for a week. Green House, with controlled light and temperature, anytime. For me, I'm starting on spring flowers and Herbs. Some have long germination time. But sap season getting started, Temperatures, above freezing daytime, and below freezing at night. Put 4 taps in black walnut trees yesterday. There dripping nicely.

If I'm aiming to get my plants out by June 1st here in Canada. Can I start these pucks 8 weeks before that date and leave my seedlings in these for that whole time? I've been using 16 oz solo cup the last few years to start my tomatoes and peppers and after 8 weeks they need to go in something bigger or go into the ground (and those solo cups have a lot more room then those 50 mm pucks). I used the smaller pucks last years to start my squash and zucchini and I started those 3 weeks before June 1st and they were more then ready to go into the ground. I honestly can't see those larger pucks sustaining anything longer then 5 weeks. You were talking about starting pepper plants 12 weeks before planting! Even using the larger pucks, surely those would need some potting up? Thanks for the video and I look forward to your thoughts.
@THERUSTEDGARDEN
@THERUSTEDGARDEN 6 месяцев назад
I dont think these would be better than 16 ounces solo cups. Try tomatoes 6 weeks before planting date for the solo cups. The 2 weeks wont make much of the difference. Peppers can stay at 8 weeks. If you have room and need larger plants... peppers 10-12 weeks help.
@slamdunk58
@slamdunk58 6 месяцев назад
Thanks so much for taking the time and effort to reply but.... that doesn't quite answer my question. If I use one of those small pucks (36mm) to start my zucchini and squash, how long can I let them grown in there before they need to be potted up or planted out? I'm guessing three weeks maximum. And if I use the larger pucks (50mm) for my pepper plants (these pucks are the best for getting peppers to germinated) I can't seeing letting them stay for more then 4 and half weeks without planting out. It's a great video on this subject but you didn't give us any time lines. In other words, you can't do a video on these pucks and mention starting your peppers 12 weeks in advance of last frost date and not tell people how long the seedling can actually stay in the pod. I think we can all agree that it isn't 12 weeks but then how long is it? Ok, I look forward to hearing back from you. Thanks again. @@THERUSTEDGARDEN

Hi Gary, I'm growing peppers using the same brand of kit, living in zone 10 and starting indoors. I'm trying to fight a sort of white mold/hairy white fungus on the tops. I just got a heating mat today and I've started to leave the lid off. I'm just under one week elapsed. Any advice? Thanks! EDIT: Also have begun using an LED grow lamp today as well. Previously I had indirect sunlight.
@THERUSTEDGARDEN
@THERUSTEDGARDEN 4 года назад
Lamps are key. Let the tops of them dry as much as you can between watering. And if you just started.... on a day over freezing light some direct sun outdoors cleanse the tops. 30 minutes of sun help manage fungus but only if it is early at germination. Please visit my seed and garden shop www.therustedgarden.com for your seeds, seed starting supplies, package seed deals, oils and my new LOGO'd journals and harvest bags. THANKS! @Gary Pilarchik so you would recommend putting a young seedling in the sun? Just wondering, as this is my 2nd year gardening and last year (my first year) I was told not to do that and to always keep seedlings in the windowsill because they are too fragile for outdoors quite yet. I live in north Texas zone 8A. We are having sunny 50’s-60’s in the afternoon here. I will be starting my seeds this week indoors. I do have a grow light but it’s nothing fancy and I think I will just move them in and out in their dome.

@teefawnzee
@teefawnzee 3 года назад
Some ppl sow more than one seed in a cell/pod. When someone does this, they are just increasing the chance of something germinating. If they all germinate in that cell, that's great but chances are they're going to compete for root space/nutrients. So after germinating, you would need to thin or get rid of the other germinated seedlings that look weak or not as nice. It hurts to get thin, but it's in your plant's best interest 😭

I figure I will gently remove the netting and genyly roll the dirt out to separate the root systems. Can you offer advice or maybe do a 2 min video? Thanks brother. Big fan of your channel. Also in Md. Have a great day.

Thanks. I am not growing in them but you idea works. For tomatoes if the are well spaced, you can cut the pod down the middle. Good luck. I’m guessing they have to cool down first, before I plant the seeds in them, right?

When they need it is the real answer as it varies. The trick is the top dries first to a light brown. That is how you know. What do you think about using peat in my seed trays? it's much cheaper than starting/potting mix and should basically be the same as using the pellets right?
@THERUSTEDGARDEN
@THERUSTEDGARDEN 4 года назад
It is very close. Most starting mix is peat and vermiculite. Ive made my own using those products. I never did straight peat. But in theory you are right.
