Thank you. I just opened my set of hardness files (exactly like the ones you show here) and the instructions are in Japanese. Your video helped a lot.

I have been using AEB-L alot lately and send it out for HT. It comes back at 60-61 HRC It can go a bit higher with a Cryo treatment. Love your tutorials and have been trying some electro etching of blades

I just started using it. I heat treated them @ 1950 for 15 min than plat quenched then into dry ice for cryo. Was very happy with 60-61 results. Plus even leaving this stuff around the shop I get no rust !! Thanks for the feedback and support.

You are doing it backwards. Start with the hardest files 1st, then work your way down. That way the softer files will last longer.

Another fine video Dan. I have been using a set of chain saw files to sharpen my bread knives or serrated pocket knives. I have no idea of the hardness level, but they bite right through the knife blades. I was surprised with the bread knives as they are Henkels and supposedly very good quality. The pocket knives are normally the two-buck varieties at Walmart. I don’t expect these to be top quality so mostly they stay in the bottom of a tackle box or various tool pouches for the vehicles. The chain saw files are in a pack of three or four at Walmart, so I wasn’t expecting much but when they cut into the steel of the supposedly good knives I was surprised. I wonder how to get them tested for a HRC.

What happen after tempering if you use the files
@lad60606
@lad60606 4 года назад
After heat treating and quench, you're probably greater than 65 hardness, but the blade is very brittle. Tempering brings the hardness down some, not much, to allow the steel to relax a little and not be as brittle. So to answer your question, directly after heat treating and quench, the 65 file likely won't do anything. After tempering, the 65 will scratch the knife and maybe the 60 will scratch the knife.
