How to use Sonar to catch White bass, lake Belton January 2018

Hello fishermen, today on skunked again, John and I hired fishing guide Bob Maindelle on Belton Lake to learn how to use Sonar to locate and catch white bass and hybrids. In this video, Bob shows us where to look for white bass, and how to use sonar to identify fish and teaches presentation techniques to catch them. Part 2 will be the fish catching video. I realized that I never really knew how to use electronics until today. Bob is the professional's professional, willing to teach so that I could go out to do it in my own boat. On a slow bluebird day, we boated 60 fish.

-Fenwick rods, and Pflueger reels with braid line and fluorocarbon leader
-White Redneck 180 slab jiggin spoons with his custom made stinger hooks
-Custom made fish attracting thumper (battery operated thumping noise maker)

Awesome Video! Bob is the man! Looks like he upgraded from his 12 inch lowerance to a 16 inch from a few months ago when I went with him last. He is an excellent guy and has to be one of the best fishing guides in Texas. Very professional and eager to teach and help you be successful! If you have never been with him, it is worth your time and effort to go with him!

Mr. Maindelle is one of the best guied on Belton and Stillhouse , he catches over 13, 000 fish a year. He even gives sonar classes on huminbirds or larance units .HE'S THE BEST ! And you can read his volume in the Killeen Dailey news paper in the sports section , it's like getting a Christmas present once a week .

@@skunkedagain didn't have any luck on Lake Belton since the flooding closed all the parks. so I went to Lake Buchanan caught one 3 and one 4 pound large mouth off the docks while trying to staying out of the Wind. And I put 150+ miles on my truck and boat trying to fish.

I learned about the three different jigging techniques used. I was also surprised how small those schools of fish looked on sonar!

Would have been cool to see the sonar recorded of the fish on the FF. Used to fish that lake all the time when I was stationed at Ft. Hood. Thanks for the vid!

I just found your video. I actually live in California but was stationed at Hood years ago. My wife and I are planning on moving back to that area Hopefully before Christmas and She doesn't know yet but she is getting me a Jon Boat for Christmas. I really liked your video and I have not fished in so long it is good to be able to learn things before I get there. Hopefully I will live in the Belton / Salado area. I have never really had a chance to learn to fish before and now that I am retired and the Wife is retiring we will have plenty of time to learn and fish on Belton Lake and Stillhouse lake both.

Great I was Stationed there back in the late 70's first part of the 80's. I use to fish there all the time at the Marina on Still house as I lived about 3 miles from it. I took wife there a couple time and she fell in love with the area to. We came here in around 85 because hr family and her mother was really sick and she got a job with the county here in Los Angeles as a nurse and stayed till now for her retirement., We hopefully will be back on Stillhouse and Belton for Christmas.. I will be in the market for an affordable Jon Boat when we get there... Maybe I will run across you out on the lake sometime. I have not actually fished for hardly anything other then some stocked trout here and i miss cat fishing and bass and crappie... Can Hardly wait to get back home as I grew up in Texas on Lake Texhoma...

What artificial bait did y’all bring with you? He took a liking to it and was curious what it was? I used Laners (Constant Pursuit Outfitters.com) “Thump Boss” in white....it’s a bad boy for catching whites and still enticing hybrids. 4 inch bait.

i catch em on belton on the hottest days at mid day. For what ever reason they school up during the hottest part of the day in the 10-20 foot range. I can nail at least 60 a day on huge rapala bluegill or spoons. and like he said droppoffs with humps.

Nate: interesting that they'd be that shallow. They must be chasing shad onto these humps. Do you find them there during other times of the day too?

skunked again not agressive like that unless it's about to rain. Ive seen the same thing at Granger lake. I think the bait fish come up for air and the bass follow. It's almost like an oven turns on their bite. Normally lasts about an hr then fades off suddenly. Learned that from an old buddy whose family fished here since the lakes were damned.

16 inch Lowrance would be nice, but not many fisherman can afford 2600.00 to 5000.00 for these high end sonar units.

yep, that's right. It's nice, but not must have to get the 16". However, Bob is a professional, so this is the tool of the trade for him. What size do you have? Tim

Terry: Bob Maindelle does sonar training on his boat, or yours. Super reasonably priced. I learned everything about whites, hybrids, and stripers from him. His service is "holding the line fishing guide". Tim

skunked again Thank you! I fish at Cherokee Lake in eastern TN. Does have white bass but I mainly fish for stripers and hybrids. Have been having good luck lately jigging with BPS Freestyle Jigs. Hoping Bob will do a video strictly on using his electronics, favorite settings, etc...someday. That would be a BIG help to anglers like me that are weak in that department.

I seen you work the Lowrance a bit more than the Humminbird. Unfortunately I own Humminbird products. It was very cool watching u teach but the glare kinda masked the view. I Sub and will continue to follow u because u r very informative. Thanks

Hi Reggie, the Lowrance was mainly used for downscan and mapping features, but Humminbird was used as downscan, and communications with the trolling motor to troll to the exact spot on the downscan. I think they're both equally capable, it's just that Humminbird talks to MinnKota, and Lowrance talks to Motorguide. I wish they'd both follow some standard and be able to talk to all devices, not just ones they're partnered with....

skunked again , LOL I definitely understand. A year ago I began the process of buying things. I quickly learned this same thing. I was stuck on buying motorguide bc of ALL the fishing guides loving them and I wanted Humminbird for their cost reduction and mega imagining. Well I had to go with Minn Kota because they communicate with one another. The Minn Kota was twice the price though and I hated that and looked for all kinda ways to make the Humminbird and Motorguide talk but it wasn't gonna happen. So I went what made sense. Thanks again for your great video!!!!!!!!! I did learn a lot from you and I've always wanted to see the TWO unit's working at the same time so I can see if their is any difference between them. Thanks again!!
