We all used crystal clear when I was in art school. It works great, but it’s so toxic that I can smell the drawing when I bring it inside, even after it’s dry! The BEST fixative I found is Spectrafix spray fixative. It’s made of casein, works beautifully on several mediums, and you can spray it indoors. The spray container it comes in tends to splatter so it’s best to get a florisal spray container to put it in. Spectra fix sells them or you can get them at a beauty supply for cheap.

That’s problem. I over do the fixative as I I’m sure if that’s enough for the soft pastels to stick. So... my pastel colour end up dull and a shadow develops on the surface. The paper very wet! 😧 So, just one pass with the spray should be as good as can be? I’ll have to practice with that.

I know this video is pretty old but I saw that you guys were still liking recent comments so I was hoping I could get some help on this topic. I've searched a lot of websites and forms but not many seem to talk about this. I made a pencil sketch a while back, and I wanted to put some gold foil on it to decorate it. I used a regular glue+water mix and some of it got slightly on the pencil sketch and left undesirable marks, which I couldn't really get rid of and brought down the quality of the sketch. I wanted to re-do the piece, but I was wondering if putting a spray fixative over the sketch first would help with the pencil sketch being protected from the glue so there were no darker marks due to the glue on the pencil. Should I use a temporary or permanent fixative? Do you guys recommend any kinds of fixatives for pencil drawings and gold foil?
@artprof
@artprof 3 года назад
Hi! The only way to truly know is to do some tests with different materials. I think you might get better results with a matte spray instead of fixative; if you do use fixative, the permanent one would probably be better. Another option might be a very thin layer of matte medium, then sanded down. Song Kang demos this technique in this tutorial: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DB8RrJCH0zg.html Good luck! -Prof Lieu

there is a non-toxic fixative you can use indoors but it is more difficult to work with and easier to ruin the work.. casein based sprays. these are what people like Degas used back in the day, but they aren't aerosols so it's easy to overdo them and soak the paper too much.

I’m shipping using cellophane sleeves and other protective methods already

Casein fixative is non-toxic and can be made safely by mixing pure casein powder (from bodybuilding powder suppliers), pure water, and spirits (either pure grain alcohol or methylated spirits that have no color but are still denatured). This is essentially the Degas recipe, though he used casein made from milk.

You could use permanent, except that you really shouldn't paint on a sketch with oil paint because the oil paint will eat your paper! This is late, but perhaps you'll see it. With crochet cottons, pinning it to shape and using spray sizing, saturate and allow to dry. Do not use spray starch as it has sugars in it and may attract critters. The same with old fashioned sugar water which is an old way to do it. You don't want your work eaten.

What type of pastels are you using? Are they soft pastels or oil pastels? Between the two, soft pastels are extremely delicate and can be ruined very easily, so I recommend either using fixative or putting the drawing behind a glass frame. Oil pastel is more durable and less fragile, but it's still susceptible to damage. -Prof Lieu

@@artprof I'm using soft pastels... And when I finished the painting should I fixative it and put it in Passepartout behind the glass and that is okay? Or when it's gonna stay at my place and I'm not gonna move the paintings can I not use the fixative and put it in Passepartout, or then the pigments are gonna fall on the white Passepartout?

If it's going under glass, no need to apply the fixative. The fixative does darken the drawing a bit, so it's better to not use it. The fixative helps a bit, but it's not perfect, so even a drawing with fixative can get damaged if someone rubs it. -Prof Lieu

Does fixative help the graphite drawing from fading,in the case where its framed and hanged?Thanks.

Not really, fixative just protects when drawing if someone physically touches it. -Prof Lieu

@@artprof Thank you so much for the info! So if its behind glass its relatively safe from fading?

@@warrenkamau660 Yes, you just have to make sure that it has an archival mat and museum glass, talk to a framer about it. -Prof Lieu

Hey, i just got my first can of fixative today! Im thinking of spraying all of my sketches in my sketchbook because they just wont stop smudging. In the video, you said to not spray it indoors but its kind of a hassle to go outside every single time i do a little sketch in my sketchbook. Is it really that necessary? Also, how long does it take for the fixative to dry? Can i just flip the page and spray the next drawing without waiting for the previous page to dry? Thanks!

Yes it really, really is necessary to spray fixative outdoors. Spray fixative is sooooo bad for you, and you don't want to inhale any of it!!! It dries almost right away, you could spray it, wait like 2 minutes, and then flip the page and start drawing.
