As an African American, I didn’t believe I needed SPF until about 2 years ago (I’m 29). Needless to say, my skin has never looked better and less breakout prone since high school. I attribute much of this to regular SPF use. I always reach for SPF 50 now for the reasons you mentioned and also to mitigate against any chances that the SPF rating is actually lower.

I always used an SPF 15 every day for about two decades, since it was incorporated in my daily moisturizer. Not a great number, I know, but I like to think it helped keep my skin in good condition. I do all this EXCEPT the frequency of reapplying. That is the toughest for me, not because of will to comply, but because I wear makeup and have not found a good solution. My skin gets dry and mineral powders to top off do not have the desired cosmetic effect. Every spray says not to spray it on the face and pressing a liquid in disrupts my makeup. It is a tough one. I do wear a hat if I am walking outside for any length of time but not inside working near a window.

I know that sunscreens aren’t additive in efficacy. I just want to make sure that’s understood before I tell what I do. I have yet to find an SPF 50 that my skin can accept daily. But I found an SPF 30 that it will. When I apply 1/4 tsp of the 30 and let it set, then apply the same amount of an SPF 50 on top, my skin handles that well. For both products, I have to avoid salicylates completely, and they are in most formulas, which makes finding a sunscreen tricky.

Dr Bunting, I’ve been using Heliocare factor 50 gel for years, I love the texture, but have been VERY CONCERNED recently that the company has become very vague about the protection of this sunscreen. They told me the advanced range has not been through the same approved testing as their 360 range (which I hate the texture of). This advanced range doesn’t have a UVA seal or PA**** rating and I’m very concerned I’m spending an awful lot on a sunscreen that the company seems to be hiding just how much protection it actually offers. I asked why it hadn’t been through the same testing and they said those tests weren’t about then and it would be too expensive to put the advanced range through those tests now. That did not fill me with confidence. Please give me an honest answer, not a trying to endorse their product answer, how much protection does it REALLY offer and are the ingredients good for preventing ageing and hyperpigmentation? (Please reply)

Is there any vale to “layering” sunscreen… brands are coming out with serum spf products… would using a routine like… serum spf, then moisturizer with spf , and topped off with a bb/cc cream with spf give enough coverage? Or is only the last step of a “thick” layer of spf going to protect the skin?
@sunscreenhoarder6558
@sunscreenhoarder6558 2 года назад
I'd be concerned about filters interacting and getting destabilised. Uncoated zinc oxide is usually the biggest culprit for causing problems with other sunscreens (so most sunscreens marked as "natural" probably shouldn't be layered with an organic or hybrid one). Also, "serum" SPFs refers to the *texture* of the SPF and not what stage it should go in. Sunscreen should always be applied last.

Anyone look better when they are happy.

Sunscreen is still important even while saying home. There was a photo I saw of a women who sat beside a window for years, one side of her face which the sun hit had very clear skin damage with a lot of fine lines, the other had very little. To be safe, apply it when you are at home about 3 times at least even if you are not near the window, light still creeps in. Make sure your sunscreen has good UVA protection, glass can block UVB, but not UVA, and UVA contributes to skin ageing and skin cancer. If you do decide to sit near the window, make sure your sunscreen was recently reapplied.

I diligently wear at least SPF 30 (usually 50) on my face, neck and back of hands every day. I cannot however apply it near my eyes (brow bone and upper eye lids). My eyes get so irritated and dry and I've tried so many mineral, hybrid and chemical sunscreens. Anybody tips for protecting the eye area that actually doesn't irritate my eyes?

I love the Avène Intense protect. I apply it on my eyes and zero reaction, and I have supeeeer sensitive eyes. I need to be super careful with mascara, or eye powders, etc.

I use EltaMD UV Elements or MD Solar Sciences Mineral Tinted Cream around my eyes. I'm very sensitive in that area, but these sunscreens work fine all over my eyelids and brow.

No mineral sunscreen should sting around the eyes, however it can be drying, I know. I have extremely sensitive eyes and the only non drying mineral sunscreen I have found to work brilliantly as I also have eczema is Paula’s Choice Calm SPF30 for dry skin, with this one in particular I can slather on my eyes no problems whatsoever ever.

There is this question that I've been asking myself for so long now : the makeup primer should be applied before or after SPF? I decided to apply the primer before the sunscreen, so it would do like a "blocking layer" between my moisturizer and sunscreen. This way, it seems like my sunscreen "stays" on the top of my skin instead of penetrating into my skin like the rest of my skincare products (which would make my sunscreen ineffective quicker). Do I apply my products in the right order ? This is what I do : cleanser - serum - moisturizer - *primer* - sunscreen - foundation - etc. etc. Thank you so much for your help !

@@SusanSlattery Really ? But sunscreen isn't suppose to be the last step of a routine ? I'm afraid to "mess up" the composition of the SPF by spreading a primer on it. If you see what I mean...

I put primer on (when i do) after my sunscreen. I can’t remember where but it was suggested before to do it this way. Maybe Dr Dray?

@@allergicrhinitis4469 Every You Tuber says put on your serums, moisturizer, then SPF, whether mineral or chemicals. Let the SPF set up and form its "FILM" for 10-15 minutes. Then, go in with primer, foundation and all that. I asked Angie on Hot + Flashy about this as I watched her rubbing things in on top of SPF and she said, "Yeah, maybe I'm disrupting it, but I let it set up, and anyway, at least I put SPF on!"

Also if you worry about it, get a spray SPF to set your makeup. Still, put the SPF on, but then top everything off with a finishing SPF spray. Coola makes one and so does Kate Somerville.

what about alcohol in sunscreen?
@hochi9690
@hochi9690 2 года назад
Alcohol in sunscreen is usually used to bind the ingredients together that helps for the product consistency so they're not entirely bad but its up to you if you want to use sunscreens that have alcohol or not. Hope this helps :))

I use Alumier md mineral day and night to protect also against radiation from my phone and tablet. It is sweatproof and protects against tewl, trans epidermal water loss. It is difficult to remove. I take it off with oil based cleanser and hot face cloth.
