Special thanks to Masoretic expert and friend Hayyim O. from NYC for taking a look at this video during production.
Special thanks to www.BiblePlaces.com for the beautiful pictures of the scribe writing the Scroll of Esther.
Note: The Hebrew verse 1 Chronicles 6:56, where the name Ashtaroth appears, is labeled as 1 Chronicles 6:71 in many Christian Bibles. Thanks to watcher MW for pointing this out.

Shalom (again) Growing up in the Deep South of the USA we were told/warned to never write in our Bible - (I am a “doodler” from birth in books that I read - underlining passages etc)- & that kind of dampened my desire to really read and study the Bible for some time- i find it humorous and comforting that the scribes made notes in the text that we are now reading centuries later ❤ shalom to you shalom to Jerusalem -

Todah rabbah, rev Rabbi. This video series was immensely helpful. Even though I had taken Biblical Hebrew for a year in university, I barely had a clue about the Masoretic notes. The course itself barely mentioned them, and in my years of reading Tana''k since then, I have all but ignored them and shied away from my BHS (preferring JPS, Keren Chumash, Reader's Hebrew bible, and a few other editions). This series has invigorated me to study the Masoretic tradition with greater vitality! What I am very surprised by most is: essentially, in order to truly understand the massorah, I must have two additional books in addition to the BHS? The Masorah of BHS guidebook by Kelley, Mynatt, and Crawford + the Masorah Gedolah? I sort of feel cheated that BHS doesn't have that already, and I can't even use it! My question is (and when I was cataloguing at YIVO for a summer, there were a lot of copies of these there): didn't the Mikraot Gedolot include all these notes, or would a reader of those volumes have to refer to additional volumes in order to understand the masorah as well?? B'ezrat hashem

Thanks for this very useful introduction to the Masorah notes, being a non-Hebrew speaker, I've always struggled to understand them, especially the un-pointed notes. I've got the book by Kelly but I still needed a Hebrew teacher/expert to explain these notes, using easy to understand language. Do you have a lesson on understanding the BHS signs? I cannot find Reinhold Wonneberger's, Understanding the BHS critical notes, which seems to be out of print. Shalom.

שָׁלוֹם עֲלֵיכֶם Do you know where I can find a copy of the BHS vol.2 Massorah Gedola (Massorah Magna)?

The title is in Hebrew and Latin, which means many libraries catalogue it differently. In WorldCat search for "מסורה גדולה" and the year 1971, you'll find many different entries, one of which should have a local library. bit.ly/36nsHwR If that doesn't work or if you'd just like to share your studies email me at BiblicalCulture@gmail.com

Excellent. Does Massorah Gedolah that you are looking at cover the entire Hebrew Bible? Or are there multiple volumes?

Yes Shawn, it's one volume for the entire Hebrew Bible. Good luck with your studies!

Hello, David. May I ask you what is the difference between the "Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia (Hebrew Edition) Hardcover - May 1, 2007", and the "Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia (BHS) (Hardcover): A Reader's Edition (Hebrew Edition) Hardcover - January 1, 2015" ? Thank you very much.

So I need two more books to use the BHS?
@BiblicalCulture
@BiblicalCulture 2 месяца назад
Technically yes. To fully understand the Masorah notes you need the 2nd volume by Weil, and that intro book is not necessary but it’s a very good guide.
