In the USA the Tracker IV is one of the most popular metal detectors sold. It is considered to be the best metal detector for under $100 USD. This was an excellent tutorial.

I am looking into purchasing a metal detector after finding a 500 year old knife while working (landscaping). I have absolutely no experience in metal detecting & looking through a variety of videos as to see which ones have rescuing similiar informations. I really like this video for the information given as well as the ease of understanding the information for people like me who would love to start this hobby but having a little fear as to the truth on the information given so as I won't dish out money for a detector and realizing on reception that it wasn't worth what I spent or it doesn't do what they mentioned in the video seen. I've noticed a reoccurring theme in many videos on behalf of the maximum depth for the different articles being searched for. Is there a reason this was not mentioned in this video ? No insult to this video in particular, as I mentioned I have absolutely no understanding of metal detecting and would like to know as much as possible.

Anything highly conductive gives us a High sound, yet Gold gives us a low sound. I still do not understand how a "discriminator" works.
@selfsufficiencyhowtoguide7135
@selfsufficiencyhowtoguide7135 6 лет назад
Discrimination is not an exact science as the signal generated in a metal detector depends on a number of variables, including target size & shape, depth, corrosion of the target, as well as conductivity. Gold does have a relatively high conductivity compared to some other metals, however, gold's conductivity is not as high as copper and silver and it is actually closer to aluminium that either of those. This is why silver and copper will give a high tone on the tracker 4, but not necessarily gold. Electrical conductivity (10.E6 Siemens/m) Silver 62,1 copper 58,5 Gold 44,2 Aluminium 36,9
@dcorman
@dcorman 6 лет назад
Thank you for the response! I'm still confused as to what items, besides aluminum, will be rejected with too high a setting, or if I'm risking missing targets of value if I keep turning that knob up.
@selfsufficiencyhowtoguide7135
@selfsufficiencyhowtoguide7135 6 лет назад
Hi Don Corman. Yes, the more you turn up the disc, the more targets you will exclude and that may well mean you miss something good. Most detectorists who are specifically targeting gold nuggets will not use discrimination at all to maximise sensitivity (and because most dedicated gold detectors only have limited discrimination functionality, especially with mono coils). Discrimination really comes into its own when relic hunting. Even then, I usually only use it very lightly - enough to just filter out iron. The Bounty Hunter Tracker IV detector has the capability to discriminate much more harshly, but this is really only for people specifically targeting silver and copper coins in a high trash environment. Otherwise, I don't think the disc dial should be turned up high.

@hobbydetectorsaustralia
@hobbydetectorsaustralia 2 года назад
There will definitely be more noise when detecting in some et sands. We have often seen this on beaches. It makes detecting a little more difficult as you will get false signals. Turn sensitivity down. If you get a signal, swing back and forth over it. Tones need to be clear and repeatable. If not, move on.

@hobbydetectorsaustralia
@hobbydetectorsaustralia 3 года назад
HI joe, the sensitivity knob will need to be adjusted to ensure you don't get chatter or chirps from things like very conductive ground (each, wet beach sand etc) or nearby powerlines etc. For all metal mode, you would typically leave the Notch/Discriminator knob in the off position, so the detector will react to all metals (including Iron). You can turn the know clockwise to remove iron tones if you want.

I'm thinking of buying my first detector. To my ears, in tone mode the only one that sounded different was the copper coin. The pull tab sounded the same as the gold ring. So I guess if you're looking for gold jewelry at a beach be prepared to dig thousands of pull tabs. Isn't gold also highly conductive ? Which is why they gold plate computer electrical connections.
@hobbydetectorsaustralia
@hobbydetectorsaustralia 6 лет назад
Hi Thom. Good question and yes - you are correct - picking gold out from aluminium can be tricky, even with a top of the line relic detector. I've been detecting for years and I am very familiar with my machines, but I still dig plenty of aluminium targets. Discrimination is not an exact science as the signal generated in a metal detector depends on a number of variables, including target size & shape, depth, corrosion of the target, as well as conductivity. Gold does have a relatively high conductivity compared to many other metals and, as you suggest, it is used in electronics for this, but also because of it's resistance to corrosion, a property not shared by either silver or copper. However, gold's conductivity is not as high as copper and silver and it is actually closer to aluminium that either of those. This is why silver and copper will give a high tone on the tracker 4, but not necessarily gold. I would always go fairly low on discrimination in most situations - just enough to get most iron out. You might do a lot more digging, but you will avoid missing something special! Your first detector depends on your budget. If your looking sub $300, then the Tracker IV won't disappoint - it's a reliable machine that does what it says on the tin and is great value! If you're going for a more expensive relic detector, look for one with a wide range of discrimination tones and good depth. Electrical conductivity (10.E6 Siemens/m) Silver 62,1 copper 58,5 Gold 44,2 Aluminium 36,9 Hope this helps Bear, Hobby Detectors.

You might need to discriminate out iron signals, and one thing to be careful off is some false positives, especially in wet beach sand. The detector might give a signal, but the trick is go go back and forth over that section of sand a few times and if the signal isnt clear and repeatable then it isn't a target to dig. On beaches you want clear and repeatable tones when sweeping the coil. Good luck!

BUYER BEWARE: This detector only detects metal objects up to 2 feet deep depending on the size! I was trying to find the damn water line in my yard and it couldn't even locate it. Then I found out how far it actually detects

Great, except he should have shown the settings after the test runs. He just said what he did, but it wasn’t clear what he did exactly

Can it detect in water?

Hi there, you can't fully submerge it, but it does have a waterproof coil so you could use in shallow water like a creek etc. We would recommend wiping and drying coil after use

Is this metal detector detecting objects above or under the earth? I'm afraid that 5cm in the country does not detect.

Hi there, metal Detectors (of all types) will detect metal in the ground. The depth may vary, but should be at least 12cm deep, up to much greater depths. This will be affected by the quality of the machine, the size of the coil, and size/composition of the metal target. We have used the Bounty Hunter tracker 4 frequently in the field, finding coins and small er metal objects at depths of 15cm or more.
