This is a step by step tutorial on how to use the dbx 286s microphone preamp and processor. I am sure everyone will want to use this in different ways. I use this mostly for Podcasting and Voice over work on my RU-vid videos.
This dbx 286 guide will show you how I use it and will cover the input gain, compressor, de-esser, expander/gate, the enhancer (EQ) and output volume.

I plan to get this in the future and make my Fifine AM8 sound a thousand times more sexier. Right now I'm living by with OBS, put some filters for my mic, and using VB cable drivers to output the monitoring audio into it, which I can then re-route into any game or software where I can select my microphone. Catch is, there's about a noticeable around 1 sec delay.

I bought this for my podcast as well, thank you for the video, it helped me choose some better settings. I had a couple Behringer compressors and pre amps before the dbx but I returned it all because one, both items were defective, and two, Behringer has the most negative reviews I have ever seen. The build quality of the Behringer stuff is also complete trash. I LOVE this dbx so much! Thanks again.

First of all, thank you very much for the time and all the effort that you have invested in this video. I am new to the audio recording for voice over and just started to look into good set up as i did not like the sound i was getting when voicing videos or my channel. I am kind of confused by your video as i actually prefer the sound from the small mic on your shirt to the sound of the big mic that you are using in the video. Is there any technical reason or is it simply my tone def brain and i am missing something here? Thank you in advance!

I've had my 286s for some time, the only issue I have is with a low output mic (like the Podcast&Procaster, I have both) is that I run the preamp near Maximum . To get round this I use a small Mic preamp (Behringer Mic100) connected on the Line input . The setting on the input gain is now on 0db and I control the input via the preamp. The behringer Mic100 is a good little Valve amp in its own right but added to the 286s its now something else.

Love your video and info on the DBX 286S. I have a question about the 286S. I'm a Newbie in my Voice-Over endeavor. I'm currently rebuilding my recording booth due to too much background noise with what I originally had set up. I use a Rode NT1A and Scarlett Solo. I do not stream yet. My question is would it benefit my signal chain to include the 286S when recording for VO only to be post processed?

Thanks I just bought this because of your video! I'm also using Rode Procaster mic with Behringer UMC 204HD interface and new MacBook Air. Although all sounds pretty good, i'm not quite hearing the sound quality like yours. Maybe my expectations are too high for Rode? My UMC gain is middle, DBX gain +45 / output 0. Still sounds a tad tin-y. I have good quality cables/adaptors too.

WHAAAAAT? I've been watching your In the Blues videos for YEARS and just now stumbled upon this channel due to interest in the DBX. Always, always, always calibrate your gear; it's called "Gain Staging". To stay "safe" is to manage the levels of audio through the signal flow. You always want the optimal amount of signal to flow in the analogue stage without introducing noise or distortion(some distortion is taste based).
