Thanks for the video. Would love a video on time in the backcountry without smartphones. Using paper maps plus the InReach and just bring a dumbphone for calls when you get signal.
This video was a big help! I’m an Adventure Motorcyclist, I’ve ridden from Tuktoyaktuk/Prudhoe Bay on the Arctic Ocean to Ushuaia Argentina using a Spot locator. I just got an Inreach mini 2 that I’m warming up to. One question is how do I mark home or base camp? Do I just mark it as a waypoint?
I'm old school up here in Alaska...been using the original DeLorme InReach Explorer with the 3 preset messages. Once nice thing is long battery life...after 2 weeks of use my InReach Explorer still has battery life of over 80%. I use a smart phone and GaiGPS for waypoints, navigation, etc. but use the InReach Explorer for sending text messages independent of a smartphone.
It's sad how terrible the phone app is, and how Garmin won't support their customers' problems. Make their money off people's safety, but don't give a damn when it craps out
I must be one of the few people in the world who don't own or carry a 'smart phone'. I do, however, have an InReach mini that I want to use in the wilderness, so this is perfect.
The Garmin InReach Mini 2 is really quite phenomenal for such a lightweight and compact device with a good battery life. The investment in purchasing and subscription is relatively inexpensive in relation to what it offers. I prefer to have my phone switched off whilst out and this looks to be very usable without pairing it up.
