The LEFT, RIGHT, and MID functions in Excel are commonly used to extract substrings from text strings.
LEFT FUNCTION
Let's start with the LEFT function. The LEFT function allows you to extract a specified number of characters from the beginning of a text string. For example, if you have a column of addresses and you want to extract the state abbreviation.
Write =LEFT(type the text or click the cell where the string is , comma. Then specify how many characters you want to extract 1,2,3 etc.,) Then close parenthesis and press enter.
To apply the formula to the entire column, position your mouse in the lower right corner of the cell till the cursor becomes a cross. Then double click and that’s it, the formula is applied to the entire column.
THE RIGHT FUNCTION
The RIGHT function is similar to the LEFT function, but it extracts characters from the end of a text string instead of the beginning.
For example, if you have a column of email addresses and you want to extract the .com .Write =RIGHT(the string or click on the cell where the string is then type a comma , now type the number of characters you want to extract, in this case 3) then hit Enter
Now apply the formula to the whole column if you want. Wow! Very useful right? But there is more
THE MID FUNCTION
The MID function allows you to extract a specified number of characters from the middle of a text string.
For example if you want to get the figure after the state code.
Write =MID( the text or click on the cell where the text is, comma, the extraction position where the string begins, in this case position 3, comma then the number of characters you want to extract. For this example 6 close parenthesis then hit enter. Now apply the formula to the whole column if you want.
Formulas and functions in excel are the easiest way to speed up and be more productive in your work.
