We are starting a series on modal playing! The purpose of this series is to help you see the modes as individual scales with their unique flavors.
In this video we are going to explore the mixolydian mode. The mixolydian mode belongs to the major box and we will start with getting comfortable with the mixolydian scale shape in the CAGED system. To accomplish that we need to sing and internalize the sounds of the scale.
Then, we will start improvising, targeting every note and analyzing how that note feels. This helps us anticipate the sound of the note and establishes a strong connection between our mind and what we are playing.
Mix and match different scales systems like CAGED and Three note per string to maximize your melodic options and come up with your own custom shapes.
Once we finished this exploration phase we need to concentrate in the musicality aspect. For this, put you guitar down and start singing then, translate that to your guitar.
The other thing you can do is adding rhythm to your story inspired by actual speaking phrases.
Finally, use the knowledge you previously acquired to enrich your improvisations with concepts like playing the arpeggios over the major scale, using the pentatonic scales "hidden" in the modes and incorporating the minor pentatonic scale over a mixolydian backing track.

Try dominant pentatonic 1 2 3 5 b7 It is kinda a mix of major and minor pent. Major pentatonic with a b7 instead of 6.

Everything I watch from you I pick up something useful but this is just Wow! This is exactly what I was looking for David! I watched the video and then followed the link as usual and had no idea what I was about to receive, an entire course with all of the support material! I've purchased some of your other packs and this by far, so far, has been the most immediately useful for me. I played through all of the tracks in "A" and realized how many of the modes I actually use when I'm improvising and the ones I need to concentrate on. Barry, please don't feel that your musical life is over. You are never too old to learn new things. I am 58 and stopped playing about 15 years ago and sold my guitar. I bought a new guitar a couple of months ago and have made lots of improvements by watching videos and practicing backing tracks. I am still putting modes together and when I plug into the amp it opens a whole new world. Thanks to people like David Wallimann it is easier than ever. I hope you find new inspiration as I did. Thanks so much! You are right that Mixolydian is the 5th mode extracted from a Major scale, however you should see modes as unique and individual scales. So here it wound be G Mixolydian! Juan Teppa Im sorry but if you think the pentatonic scale is boring then your not fully utilizing it. Go watch some Vai Ritchie kotzen or Eric Johnson videos and watch the phrasing and different ways they use it. Should light some bulbs

I didn't mean to be disrespectful about the pentatonic scale. It sure is a really useful scale, but David is always pushing with each lesson further beyond it. Different strokes for different folks, right? Personally, I've learn a lot in a couple years just focusing my guitar learning approach on intervals + modal playing. I try to get as far as I can from the pentatonics in my daily practice, It can become a "hard to leave" comfort zone.

Would you explain to people that there is modal variation in most improvisation unless there are little to no chord changes in a piece of music? Most people don't realise they already use modes.

I really appreciate your effort, but... don't know. For me, even after years, it's just about playing a box of the major scale or playing the scale on the whole fretboard. It's about good taste choosing the notes of the scale. I'll never understand the modes. I know them but... they are boxes of the major scale, so why talking about something else.... I have no hope, I'm afraid.

Hmm, interesting, so the G Mixolydian scale is basically the A Diatonic pattern in the CAGED system. That makes it easier to understand|

Wow, I'm blown away. You have a very efficient teaching method--you covered a ton of ground and still managed to make perfect sense. And your lesson's got a sort of spiritual element (not religious; that's not what I mean) in terms of the putting the guitar down and taking that leap of faith. I'm a bassist, and this lesson is entirely helpful for all of us four-string people all the same.

Thanks for this one David. I'm still chewing on this and it's implications. Mix. in G lets me use all those notes in the " cowboy chords" positions and on the 12th. Also I found some pentatonic shapes I can use. This has opened up the instrument in a big way. The thing is I kind of already knew in a accidental way what I was playing but now I really understand... Thank you sir.

It feels for me like the target-note c (4th) tends to take us very strong to the parent-scale c-ionian. But when you "resolve" to a different target-note, its it goes on ;) i learnd a lot from you man, thx!! I remember learning the guitar solo to 'China Grove' and how it starts out in E major pentatonic, then switches to E minor. There are probably numerous other examples. You brought up a good point!

So if the chord progression is for eg a major to b minor, it would mean we should play a mixo?

You have options. You could view that progression as a I-ii progression in the key of A and just play A Ionian. Or you could view that progression as a V-vi progression in the key of D and play A Mixo.
