I really love this channel. I don't comment often, but figured I should say. I just chill and watch them ha! I buy and fix a lot of cassette machines, but haven't had a reel machine yet

That's great! Thanks for saying hello. I am still learning how to work on tape machines and haven't fixed many cassettes except a Fostex 260 but that was just a belt. I'm glad you like the channel. It has taken years of work to make all the videos here. Thanks again!

I just finished my first song using my 80-8(mastered to cassette) and im impressed with the quality of this machine! Tape price definitely will dictate what songs get recorded next but it was a great recording experience and already starting the next!

I recorded a song yesterday with mine and was really enjoying the workflow. I find the sound of the 80-8 and it's ease of use inspiring.

I'm using mostly ATR Master Tape with all my tape machines. It's a little cheaper than RTM which I tried with a Fostex R8 and did not like as much as ATR Master tape on the same machine. I think used reels of ATR should be safe to use as I bought 2 of my 1/2" ATR reels and they have been as good as the 2 new reels I bought.

Makes me wanna buy an 80-8 again… I have the worst case of gear nostalgia for my analog recording gear (3340S, MS16’s, TEAC/TASCAM mixing boards, etc) they’re so cool and sound awesome Unfortunately tape machines are about 3x as much as they were 13-14 years ago so it’s been hard to justify jumping back in I’ll prob have to buy a beater and bring it back to life

I fixed 3 tape machines in the last few years so I got a better price on them. A Fostex R8(a really cool, fun machine), a Tascam MSR-16, and the 80-8 which I didn't pay for and needed the least amount of work. I have a matching Tascam M-35 but it sounds so good with my Soundcraft, I've just been using that with the 80-8. It has me thinking about the 90-16 and how good that might sound. I have an Otari but no remote. I hope to get it running one day too. The 80-8 sounds so good and is so easy to use, Ive been using it instead of my digital system or the MSR-16 which I also like.

@@TwinCreekAudio and athomashorrock7221, I also have 4 different Teac/TASCAM reel to reels. I have this model in near perfect condition, also also have the TASCAM 30-8 in near mint, a TEAC 3300 and a 6010. Selling the two 1/4 inch R2R decks for $300 each. They play and record, the 3300 needs the control arm right side replaced, but I have a new set for it ready to go. I may be selling on of the 8 track decks. I would have to get around $1000 at least for either one. Actually the TASCAM 30-8 probably is not for sale as it is the newer version of 8 track. I like to record in analog and digital at the same time. I have a decent size studio and handle 16 track recording in there. Up in the Poconos of Pennsylvania. Let me know if interested in anything. Thanks for your very informative videos. I did subscribe a while back and have seen most of your videos. Nice work. Question, why not have it hooked up to speakers? LOL... It would be interesting to hear how well the speed on playback is. I have experienced warble in other machines in the past. Anyway, I enjoyed the video. Cheers guys.

hey buddy, i use the pause button togetter with the rec botton, so i just press paly, i think thats the only way to use it ;). i got two 80-8, one is in good condition the other one sits half disassembled on my kitchen table, i wait for some parts and the vs-88 to test it ;), thank for the nice video

That's good information to know. I seems to sound and work exactly the same but maybe it's leaving the record electronics engaged in pause. They are really nice machines and still seem to work great. I don't have the varispeed option but I might try to find that after I finish my other tape machine projects. Good luck with yours and happy recording!

I just picked up a vs-88 for $10.50!! I only need the accompanying DC Capstan motor and the manual to install and adjust properly. Cheers!

Nice summary of the functions ! How do you find it sounds compared to your other tape machines or machine ?
@TwinCreekAudio
@TwinCreekAudio 6 месяцев назад
It sounds more vintage and thicker than the MSR-16. The MSR-16 sounds really nice and punchy and is less noisy but the 80-8 just sounds massive and very musical. I like the high end on the 80-8 a bit better too. That's likely due to the dbx on the MSR-16.

Hi, thanks for the detailed video ! Sorry for this question, but does the 80-8 have any kind of stereo output option ? Or do you have to use all 8 outputs if you use all 8 tracks ? Thanks ahead for your help, I'm just looking to set this little fella up into my studio !
@TwinCreekAudio
@TwinCreekAudio Месяц назад
It doesn't have any kind of stereo output as that would require it to have a built in submixer I think. It only has 8 separate outputs from the individual tracks. These need to be connected to a mixer in order to combine them to a stereo mix.

BEWARE the reel table part can break or the M4 bolts in the part under the reel table can go soft and the bolts lose there grip and the reel table can start to move in and out i have alot of this model super deck they are the tascam 38 head will fit on this deck the team 38 is better as it can be jazzed up on the tape speed side 3 3/4 to run at the same speeds as the otari 1/2 inch deck i lost my deck to bad caps saved my otari DP2700 just in time
@TwinCreekAudio
@TwinCreekAudio 6 месяцев назад
That is good to know. I haven't had any problems with mine but I will be sure to be careful. I did adjust the reel heights before use and replaced a hub adapter that was broken. The machine has been working great and I really like this model!

I disagree that the Tascam 38 is a better model. Absolutely not true. Cheap plastic parts and terrible relays. Teac 80-8 is FAR superior. Agree with the reel table issue though. Although it depends on the unit and how it was used and stored. I stand by the Teac 80-8 til I die. I could list many many reasons why. Anyways, good video. Not too many new videos out there regarding this beauty
@TwinCreekAudio

@@soulslip thank you! I haven't used a 38 in many years but I have to agree that the 80-8 seems to be better built and also a bit easier to work on. I was really surprised at how good mine sounds even with its age and wear.
