Having declared my dissatisfaction with this sharpener last night ru-vid.comUgkxDcr-y2Pf6xdnrFHrSP7dl9kpKaCozcSQ I thought about the problem some more. It occurred to me that I might be undoing each attempt at achieving a sharp edge by the repeated attempts. So, I tried to clean up the unsatisfactory result by honing with only positions 3 and 4.Miracle!! A really nicely sharpened chef's knife, more than enough to handle my needs. Admittedly, it did not reach professionally sharpened razor-fineness, but it is now significantly sharper than it was. A bout of breaking down carrots convinced me. So, major apologies to the manufacturer, Amazon, and all happy and potential owners! Follow the directions: don't buy it if you have ceramic blades; and don't overwork your knife blade.

So a knife that has a full flat grind, just as an example because I believe this transfers to all knives, the angle won't be 15°/20° it will be less universally and vary between every knife depending on the width of the spine of the knife. The angle will be consistent to each particular knife but not consistent on a knife to knife basis unless the spine width of each knife is the same. The same applies to a knife without a full flat grind because the angle of the grind on the "sides" of knives vary between each knife even if it's a sabre grind type blade. Some sabre grind type blades are flat before the grind starts and then as long as the angle block part of the sharpener is flush with the flat part of the blade it could be as true to the angle as the block is. Most knives aren't like that though and a high end type kitchen knife usually has a full flat grind and therefore will not have the designated 15° or 20° edge once it has been sharpened. It will be slightly steeper.
@clay7115

@Murph I'm sure this product will work for your pocket knives, I just wouldn't be too quick to say " yeah this sum b*tchin knife has a 15° angle on one side and 20° on the other side" after you have sharpened your knives with this system.

Just arrived after a very lengthy wait (originally Apr 17, today is May 4) after ordering on March 16th. It arrived via Canada Post, needed to pay $30 in import duties & taxes. It is easy to use, probably takes more than a few tries if the knife is dull. Tumbler did promise me "a complimentary German made knife as a thank you for your patience" but that did not come in the package as it arrived today. So not sure about their promises or guarantees just yet. Wouldn't mind the free knife so long as there aren't more duties and taxes upon receipt.

Can you make another video explaining the science behind the two different sides. Like I get the idea of creating the burr but I thought the burr was removed when you started shaving the other side. Is it the honing that removed the burr you create?
@tumblerusa
@tumblerusa 4 месяца назад
Thanks for the suggestion, we can definitely work on something like that! The industrial diamonds used by Tumbler are the optimal material for restoring knife blades of any hardness to an optimal basic sharpness. With the coarse diamond grinding wheel you resharpen your knives in the first step and achieve a very good grinding result. After coarse sharpening with the diamond disc, the cutting edge gets a fine finish with the stainless steel honing wheel and the last burr on the cutting edge is smoothed out. Only a few movements to the front and back are needed here to achieve the desired result.

Can you do the same demonstration but show the edge/sharpness of the tip of those curved blade chef's knives. I don't doubt your system will work on the main blade, but see most of these "systems" actually make the tip worse and dull and the first 1" or so on the blade is also important in several cutting techniques.

Perhaps this is a dumb question, but how can the holder possibly hold a knife in place while you grind its edge? I understand that it's a magnet, but I'm familiar with magnets and can't picture one being strong enough to secure a knife while you're sharpening it. Or.. does it take five minutes because you need to rub it softly? Is that the idea-- don't put much force on it so the magnet sticks?
@tumblerusa

I just used mine today for the first time. The tumbler does the work - not hard pressure is required - in fact, it could cause the knife to shift position if you pushed hard on the blade with the tumbler tool. You 'feel' the abrasion/sharpening as you go forward and backwards and it becomes quickly apparent that only gentle pressure is needed. The diamond side does all the work, gently and with repetition.

Looks like the center piece rolls separate from the ends. Just learned that that’s how it is supposed to work, was wondering why it didn’t work very well. I have had mine for a few months now and to get the ends to roll separate from the middle takes a lot of force and makes it hard to sharpen. Anything that can be done to fix this like adding oil somewhere?

Almost all kitchen knives can be sharpened with the 20 degree angle, as it is a common angle in the industry. You can use the 15 degree angle for harder blades, for example Damascus knives or blades with a core steel that has a higher hardness. 15 degrees is steeper than 20 degrees, which gives you a higher sharpness, but at the same time can dull faster due to the very sharp edge.

I wish the magnet was stronger. I also find with mine that it seems to be really really stiff to roll… also the O Rings will leave marks on most counter tops that are a pain to clean. Maybe that’s just because mine is so stiff to roll you need so much downward pressure to stop it just sliding on the counter.

Okay I can’t help but point out that there is a high risk of slipping if you don’t include like a silicone grip on the actual cylinder. Factor is just as important as form. Knock it off with the pushy marketing, and worry about refining your product first.

If used properly there is little concern of safety. Please use the same caution when using a Tumbler that you use when handling any knife.

How the hell are you supposed to know which angle to use ???
@tumblerusa
@tumblerusa 7 месяцев назад
Almost all kitchen knives can be sharpened with the 20 degree angle, as it is a common angle in the industry You can use the 15 degree angle for harder blades, for example Damascus knives or blades with a core steel that has a higher hardness 15 degrees is steeper than 20 degrees, which gives you a higher sharpness, but at the same time can dull faster due to the very sharp edge

$400 for the Horl, they deserve to have a company make a more affordable one and cut their business. $400 for $10 worth of material and $5 worth of manufacturing isn't a good business model.

not a gimmick... the Swedish also make a similar version... I own one it has sharpened all my knives to a razors edge. Proofs in the pudding. I use my clip on daily to break down and cut up card board boxes... cardboard is an edge destroyer... this thing sharpens it right back to a razors edge w very little effort.

This is all fine and good, until you have to sharpen a 4” tall cleaver. It’s great for regular cutlery, but when it comes to old-fashioned-pro-grade, it’s worthless.
@tumblerusa
@tumblerusa 9 месяцев назад
For taller knives, for example a large Chinese chef's knife, the Tumbler can be underlaid with a cutting board so the grinder is elevated to the level of the cutting edge. Check out this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-q6wktLexojc.html
