I appreciate how you dont edit out when you mess up a note. Every guitarist does that while practicing and sometimes when I watch dudes play online I feel like I suck.

I'll try to keep this short: When I first started playing guitar, it was on an acoustic. I had learned the basic chord shapes for major and minor chords, but I had the hang up of using a capo. I could put a capo at the third fret and learn a song using the G, C, D, and Em chords but not know what the actual notes and chords really were. When I started playing electric guitar I noticed the bands I was in to didn't use capos and that challenged me to learn the fret board. I wanted to learn every song I could that wasn't in E standard tuning. I wanted to where I could play the major and minor chords anywhere on the neck. Several years ago I started a notebook with graph paper and I made neck charts for all the tunings I had played with over the years so I would be able to know where my next note or chord was. One of the was I always referred to drop tunings as was "reverse capo-ing" a guitar. Some chords sound way better in different voicings and tunings. One of my favorite songs I ever wrote was in Open C5 [CGCGCC].

Memorizing the "standard" diatonic scale is almost the only thing that needs to be memorized by most metal guitarists. All of the modes are based off of that same pattern. Doesn't matter which notes are being played, but their relation to the key signature. Memorizing your intervals, understanding compound intervals, and understanding how those intervals make up scales and chords will cover about 90% of metal guitar.

I like the method of "play around and see what you come up with" and that old chestnut "try to think of something that sounds cool and then try to figure out how to play it". If you ask me what note something is, I will "count up" from the open string till I get to it. That defines my relationship to theory :p

Funny enough I started playing guitar in 2005 and have never played standard tuning, unless it was at a guitar store guitar. From day I tuned to 1/2 step down because of SRV and to me it always sounded better and my go to for most of my time playing was Drop C# and only over the last year have I fallen in love with Drop C.

Funny how similar u and I look at the fretboard.. I'm a shape kinda guy aa well.. I do stay within the confines of whatever scale I'm using whether it be phrygian Dorian or minor or whatever.. only thing I'd throw in here is that the note names do matter when going to harmonize my riffs. Or writing bridges or other parts to my jams.. just in terms of playing them on other areas of the fretboard. Cool video though. Very informative

Just starting on getting into drop running and I’m told is not good on a regular 25.5 scale guitars but I noticed baritones are a lil pricey… any suggestions on a affordable good brand for me a beginner on drop tuning

Depends on how low you want to go. But, Harley Benton would be a great starting point. Very cheap and they’re solid

Just listen to sylosis albums in standard, heavy as it gets. I look at it like low tuned is physically literally heavy based on pitch but e standard riffs are more psychologically heavy. Or something like that.
@patrickolivier1
@patrickolivier1 2 года назад
35-40 years ago was still sounding fresh. I think If most metal bands today used standard we would just say they’re ripping off the old metal riffs and can’t create anything new. So we downtuned to make it sound different. It’s really really hard to be creative in standard tuning without instantly going back to the 80s, I find anyway 🤷🏽‍♂️🙂. Some guys can still make it sound exciting but most can’t, we’ve been hearing guitar riffs in standard or Eb for sooooo long after a while it all sounds the same. Same thing will happen in a few years with everyone drop tuning and we’ll have to figure out something else to keep it exciting 😉
@xamislimelight8965
@xamislimelight8965 2 года назад
@@patrickolivier1 sounds like a they problem lol and there are thrash metal bands that are relatively new; Havok being my favorite. As for copying, you could argue that's a personal problem on the players end. I don't see a difference between standard and B standard. From a physical standpoint, anyway; chord shapes are exactly the same. I basically play the same style regardless of tuning. Except, obviously, open tunings. Just saying, really damn hard to make speed metal in an open tuning lol
@Will.r6

Just learn a fuck ton of metallica for standard and learn through improvisation then go to drop d and learn lamb of god, trivium and like any other difficult riffs and boom drop tuned
