This tutorial has been a lifesaver. Due to Covid-19, I am stuck marking my students' work online and I am technologically challenged to put it mildly. This has absolutely saved me and provided me with a clear and thorough understanding of how I can mark online. Thank you so very much for your time and effort.
Hello Erin: My name is Daniel Pham. I don't know much about how to use Adobe Acrobat, also could you be so kind to make a video on how to install Grammarly on word 2016? thank you so much. I really enjoy all your videos. you are gifted and very talented. I appreciate how you're so eloquent.
Hello, Daniel. Thank you for watching my video! I appreciate the suggestion concerning Grammarly. In terms of Adobe Acrobat, I do have a playlist (linked at the end of this comment) that has several core topics you might find useful, such as how to create a blank page, how to insert text, and how to insert a picture. Best of luck! ru-vid.com/group/PLTcwfTvXiBsiS-pGbA0O4FXvw6IJR_mIP
I frequently receive documents that have been previously edited by another person. The prior person's edits, for example, show as red for additions and blue for deletions. I want my edits to be in another color other than the colors chosen by the prior editor. However, I cannot find a way to create a third color for my additions and a forth color for my deletions. Is there a way to create other colors for my edits or is this not an option in Word.
Thank you for watching my video! You can select separate colors for insertions and deletions in the Advanced Track Changes Options dialog box. To get there, go to the Review tab > Tracking group dialog box launcher > Advanced Options (in the Track Changes Options dialog box). I have a full tutorial on this topic coming up soon.
Excellent tutorial. I have been using Word for a long time, only for writing with formats, never for editing and markup. Erin explains each step clearly without hurry and fast talk so I could go back and forth an open Word document to try out the moves. It was like someone by my side guiding me through each step. One step though was not touched - saving the document.
Thank you so much. I have been frustrated in how to get this up and running. Third laptop and I'm finally in. Now to figure this out on a Chrome book. Thank you again.
Thank you Erin. Concise, crystal clear and neatly illustrated. I appreciate the fact that it is available in written format too. Thank you for the time and effort. Ian Crawford
This tutorial is for anyone who is new to Microsoft Word's Track Changes and anyone who may need to brush up on a specific Track Changes topic. You can find the corresponding blog post at erinwrightwriting.com/use-track-changes-microsoft-word/.
Hello and thank you for this video. My question involves SHOW COMMENTS -- in my menu bar this is not "lit up" so seems disabled. I have co-writers who say they have commented on my comments -- and yet I am not seeing these. SO _- I have no idea how to view their comments -- or what I may be doing that it not enabling their comments to show up. Thanks for any help! We are working in WORD
Thank you for watching! If the Show Comments button is grayed out, select the Review tab, and then switch to "All Markup" or "Simple Markup" in the Display for Review menu in the Tracking group (to the right of the Track Changes button). Best of luck!
Erin, I just cannot understand why you do not have over a million subscribers. Your tutorials are proverbially worth their weight in gold. You are one of the best teachers I have ever had. Well done!
Hello Erin, I have included your awesome tutorial in my blog post. Here it is for your reference. Bonnie bonnietranslation.org/2018/07/19/novel-proofreading-invest-in-the-characters/
Dear Erin, thank you very much for your tutorial. Not too long, direct to the point and very well explained and expressed. My girlfriend tried to explain me this in my own language and she couldn't. I will subscribe to your channel. Best regards, Daniel.
I am so glad it was useful! If you are using a current version of Word, you may want to watch the updated version of this tutorial: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1-gby_qDsHo.html. Have a great day!
You're a life saver! A publisher sent me my copy edited MS and I didn't know how to track the comments and suggest changes. This tutorial is wonderfully clear. Thanks.
Erin, thanks so much for such a great video. I understood that each of the links deals with the individual topics indicated. The links seem to take me to the full video. I may be missing something. Thanks.
Hello, thank you for watching my video! The timestamp links aren't working for me, either, so I removed them and will try to find a solution. I apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your feedback!
If you have track changes turned on, the place where you paste text will be marked as an insertion. However, if track changes is not turned on, I don't think Word has an actual copy and paste history that someone else could see once your current Word session is over. (Although, that information could possibly be stored in the file's meta data.)
Thank you for watching! If the red lines are squiggly, they indicate misspellings. You can turn off that feature by selecting File > Options > Proofing > Hide spelling errors in this document only.
Hi...how can I fill in color to a pdf drawing of tank?which is showing small rectangles and I want to fi ll color in certain blocks where the work is done. How I fill color in to that ?please help
Thank you for visiting my channel. If you want to fill in the tank using Word's drawing tools, you will first have to convert the PDF to a Word file. Word's drawing tools are available in the Draw tab. Best of luck!
How should I remove the "reviewer's name" for each comment? I want the original writer to see the comments only, not the name of the reviewer who made the comment.
Thank you for watching my video! I have a separate video (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9UqdhsTE8qE.html) that explains how to remove reviewers' names. Please note that the removal process is permanent, so be sure to do it on a copy of your file, not the original.
What a clear video explaining track changes. When everyone (in a team for example) has finished tracking changes do you just accept or reject them, as appropriate, and then just turn it off by clicking on the "Track Changes" icon? I always seem to get documents with the changes down the side and can't "switch" them off! Thanks in advance, this video has gone a long way to me understanding the subject.
Hello, Colin. Thank you for watching my video. Yes, after all the tracking has been accepted or rejected, you should select the Track Changes button to turn it off. You can also change the Display for Review menu (right next to the Track Changes button, above the Show Markup menu) to "No Markup" to hide any remaining comments in the sidebar. Best of luck!
I'm actually using Microsoft Word 2007. I want to add a comment in a footnote area. When I highlight the word I want to comment on, the New Comment tab at the top of the page is darkened out and unresponsive. When I click back into the regular text area, the New Comment tab becomes live. How do I add a comment in a footnote area at the bottom of the page?
@@erinwrightwriting Thanks for your reply! I'm quite surprised. I figured there must be a way because I was able to comment on the text below a picture which, I assumed, was also not in the main body of the document.
Thank you so much for watching! You should be able to delete a table or figure while Track Change is on, so I am afraid I don't have any information about how to fix that issue. I recommend contacting Microsoft support for assistance. I wish you all the best!
All the basics are here for immediate and effective use of track changes. I have sent it to all of my team. Thanks Erin, you have done a great job, very helpful.
I am so happy to hear that! If your team is using Word for Microsoft 365 (the annual subscription), I have an updated version of this tutorial that touches on the new comment system: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1-gby_qDsHo.html.
Thank you for watching! You can change many of the colors in Track Changes (my tutorial on that topic can be found here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--jXyaWZCwLU.html). Unfortunately, I'm not aware of a way to change the color of the bar in the left margin. I do hope you are able to find a solution!
Erin, I need help formatting my document and trying not to lose the comments in Word 2010. My comments are below the comment bubbles and the charts on the template are far off the center . thus the words are not aligned in the chart at the top. Do you have ANY suggestions?? Tech department could not help me.
Hi, Lillie. I've never encountered comments that appear below the comment bubbles, causing everything else to go off center, so I'm afraid I can't offer any specific suggestions. It almost sounds like your file and/or software have become corrupted. If I come across this issue anywhere else, I will definitely post an update here for you to see. Best of luck!
Thank you for watching! If you are using an updated version of Word with the new "Modern" comment system, you can edit your own comment by selecting the pencil icon. If you are using the older comment system shown in this video, you can edit your own comment by clicking inside the comment balloon. Best of luck!
Thank you for such an enlightening and informative video, Erin. How do I go about sending a clean copy once I'm done editing? By clean copy, I mean a copy without the markups.
That's a great question. If you just want to hide the markups, go to the Review tab > Display for Review menu > No Markup. However, if you want to remove the markups while keeping all your changes, go to Review tab > Accept > Accept All Changes and Stop Tracking. (Once you save your file, the tracking will be gone, so be sure to do this on a secondary copy of your file if you think you will need the tracking later.) Best of luck!
This is excellent! Have you done a tutorial on how to work with an editor so that a series of edits from two reviewers are retained? It seems that a Rejected edit is not tracked. Thank you so much!
Thank you so much for watching! It is true that rejected edits aren't tracked. Any rejection is assumed to be the "final word" on the matter and the change becomes part of the document.
Thank you Erin it is really a very informative tutorial. One thing is missing in your lecture, how to change the reviewer name or hid it especially when you evaluate a scientific paper?
Thank you for watching my tutorial. I have a separate video on how to change the reviewer name for new comments and tracking (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2FAPpQaCTYg.html) and another video on how to remove the reviewer name for existing comments and tracking (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9UqdhsTE8qE.html). I hope that helps!
Excellent tutorial. I had no idea how to do this but have to edit a document for a job interview tomorrow using Track Changes. Thanks to you, I know what to do!
