I do this when I'm by myself in my home. Ppl think I'm nuts lol but it works to a degree. I've been doing this for decades actually. It releases stress towards an individual or individuals. It helps with past trauma/ victimizations. Bc sometimes the person or ppl aren't available and when they're not, this definitely helps. Ive been doing this exercise way before I even knew it was a common thing in therapy. I tried therapy a few times way back but it wasn't beneficial. I need someone who's been through what I have. Not someone who just sits there and pretends to get it or whatever. But yeah, this does work. It won't heal deeper wounds but it's definitely a help. Good vid lady. I appreciate it.

Bro exactly, you get it It doesn't feel right when people don't understand What I've learned from alot of unsympathetic people is just to wait, be patient because they don't understand After all you can only understand someone at the depth you met yourself

Funny how I'm looking back at this video after watching one of your more recent ones concerning IFS and noticing how strikingly similar it is
@LewisPsychology
@LewisPsychology Год назад
Thanks for your comment Chris. IFS is actually influenced by Psychodrama and Gestalt psychotherapy. Chairwork comes from Psychodrama and was further developed by Gestalt psychotherapy. There are certainly a lot of similarities. Best wishes, Teresa.

You're awesome ma'am. Your videos always give full cycle of experience. And i feel so light experiencing such psychological lessons. I've watched and liked all the chair work videos. They are short, perfect and mind blowing. One day I'll surely take a CBT session with you.

I've been following your TA clips (great serie, thank you so much), but this is the first one I'm not sure how to feel about. Aren't you basically creating a dellusion by doing this, especially if its with people you may still randomly encounter at some point? At the end of the day, you are talking to a chair, and I'm not sure, but I doubt the conversation would have the same dialogue lines had the person imagined been there in first place. Personally at least, I would rather develop some skills to be able to say these kinda of things directly instead of some momentarily cope/relief, or maybe dig to the root of the problem to identify why I was feeling like that in the first place 😅 But that aside, thank you for a great serie!

I’ve been using chairwork for 30 years and it’s the most dynamic and powerful therapy. You are externalising a conversation that was internalised and it helps mobilise energy so we can become unstuck. It’s not about the other person, it’s about your internal process. Have a look at my other chairwork videos as I think it will help. Best wishes, Teresa.

@@LewisPsychology I take back my previous comment. I had a session this week where my therapist luckily made me use this technique and it was way more eye opening than I could have expected. As it turned out I have some repressed issues that make me more or less freeze when it comes to talks, and just becoming aware of this fact made it so much more easy to lay out my thoughts, increasing also the level of clarity and removing most of the stumbling in my speech. Once again, thank you so much for all your work :)

I’ve had hundreds if not thousands of conversations in front of the mirror telling someone I couldn’t talk to how I actually felt and would have said if I had the chance while seeing how confident I looked. Also done some shouting in the forest. Maybe an empty chair is better? Does the empty chair work if you’re still in contact with a person but can’t actually say what’s on your mind to them?
@LewisPsychology

It sounds like you have been doing some really good work. Yes, empty chair will work even if you are still in contact with the person. Best wishes, Teresa.

Hi, can you do a video using the empty chairs for the 3 ego states? (parent, adult, child). I thought this video would illustrate it
@LewisPsychology
@LewisPsychology 2 года назад
Hi Rya Rya, Yes, you can place your ego states in the empty chair which can help with decontamination. This video illustrates how to use the empty chair technique. My next chairwork video will demonstrate exactly how to use chairwork to work with parts of the self. I aim to produce a several chairwork videos going forward. Best wishes, Teresa.

What do you do if the opposite happens and they flood with love for the past relationship instead of saying goodbye?
@LewisPsychology
@LewisPsychology Год назад
That would be totally fine, it would just take a different direction. You work with whatever the client presents and don't try to dictate a specific outcome. Interestingly she does not mention Gestalt Therapy, the main popularizer of empty chair work.
@LewisPsychology

It’s often assumed chairwork originates from Gestalt psychotherapy but it actually comes from the work of Moreno and Psychodrama. Perls was very influenced by Moreno. This is mentioned at the beginning of the video. Best wishes, Teresa.
