FYI even though I mentioned it in the video I could have stayed closer to the rim of the can for a bigger opening hole the nub on the tool is suppose to rub against the lip as a guide...Not the best example but you get the point, haha

Yes, the nub on the short blade should be on the outside or riding on the outer rim.

John Bullen is totally right! And the angle of the cutting blade supposed to be about 30 degrees faced outside of the can not 90 degrees to the lid as it was shown on that video. Basically, if your can opener is sharp enough you can pierce your can lid with the sharp part, angle your can opener about 30 degrees outside, start turning your can holding can opener in a static position and keeping second part of the can opener riding the rim. So you would get a perfectly round opening with a super sharp edge inside it and supersharp metal circle from the lid.

I think the front pivot part is meant to be placed on the rim, then the blade lifted, then repeat. I think.

I was taught to use this type can opener around the top outside of the can, it works slightly better, but still leaves a sharp edge but the cans used to be made of much thinner and softer tin.

It's ment to oppen on the outside of the can with the blunt oposing tab on the inside of the lid holding it when you push the "sharp" tip in the side cutting the whole topp off

@cutlerylover the top tab is designed to lever against the top edge of the rim of the can and the penetration needs to be right up against the inside rim of the can. Give it a try and you will find the tool works much more effectively.

Its actually meant to hook over the rim and cut open around the side, not the top. Actually works very well when used correctly.

I had an old dedicated opener (kitchen tool not a part of a knife) that had a curve to the blade that followed the can shape and a top bar that pries up on the rim of the can. It actually worked really well.

Jeff the nub on the non-sharpened part is supposed to hook the outside of the rim on the can then the point goes into the top and gets worked around

thanks it would appear that way but this design was not meant to be used on the rim, the nub is suppose to be pressed against the inside lid to keep a consistant cut close to the edge which I didnt do in the demo sadly lol...

The old British army knives had this style of can opener, looks even more like a lobster claw than either of these two. The can opener on the genuine victorinox SAK's is one of the best I've used, when used correctly. If there's any SAK owners out there that don't know about Felix Immler on youtube yet I suggest you check him out, his vids will help you get the absolute best from your SAK.

Victorinox used three different types of can opener, with sub-variations variations. The first model - 1897; use one like show in this video and was for cut off the top of the can from the side, not cut the lid on top like the guy in the video did. This first model was used up to 1945 (1961 in the Soldier model).

I found an old Gerlach Polish "Swiss army style" knife from the cold war. It's a solidly built sucker but I didn't know how to use this style of can opener since it's not like the one on my SAK Tinker...until now.

Those are made for cutting wall of the can and not the lid. Shorter part of that can opener hooks on the lid edge.

Older cans whose made out of thinner metal. But with evolution of cans can openers also evolved and those are now "moderne" can openers.

Fuck Jeff for the win!!! 🤣 🤣 🤣 Dude for twenty years I've been trying to figure out how my grandpa's Kamp King opened cans and I've used so many can openers but couldn't figure it out. Today for the past thirty minutes I've been researching how and nobody knew it seemed like on top of not every Kamp king had this specific can opener 🤣 your openers are slightly different but same mode of operation. I can't believe I missed this video for almost a year but I'm glad you of all people solved my problem. My grandfather didn't even know how to use it and said when he was a kid he used it for cleaning his nails, and in the army he used it to strip insulation off wires. So either way he got use from it haha.

This "claw" type can opener was designed for cut the top of can from the side, not for cut the lid on the top. See "Victorinox 1897 replica how to use the can opener" - this type of (side cut) can opener was used in SAK up to 1945 (1961 in the Soldier version).

Hi Jeff. Longtime viewer, few time commenter... I know the video is an old one. In this you mentioned you had at one point dated all of your knives and sometimes lose track of which is which date sometimes. A clever little trick is using those little cardboard tags that you may have seen at swap meets or antique stores as price tags 🏷 with a short loop of string that you can loop through with a cow hitch or larks head knot for easy quick removal for edc for the day. This I have found useful for my vintage bikes and parts, as my knife collection is still very small. You may find this useful for yourself and potential video viewers/future buyers/traders/ or worst case scenario, if poor health means that family members need to ID knives quickly and easily by brand, model No. and/or common names, and years of release/sale by the manufacturer. hmm interesting, a familiar ratcheting kind of deal, but it leaves more of the inside of the lid in place... that could have some uses however. for speed your almost better off just using a decent knife. Various techniques for that depending on the knife. P-38 much safer to open cans.

yes the P-38 was invented in 1942 this style was used before that at least in the teens to 20's for sure but all the way up to the other more modern designs...

The version I have has a round pin on the right, with a nice bevel or groove in the middle, which sits right on the rim of the can and guides the blade around the edge. It leaves a slightly wider edge around the can which makes it harder to empty the can, but not really worse than the rim left on a pop top can. Maybe a bit sharper with all the jagged edges left. They didn't expect you to bother washing and recycling the cans back then. The design was different, and they are called "tin cans" because they were actually run, which is softer. So the openers actually made a lot more sense back then. And that is why you read about guys opening cans with their pocket knives, which makes one cringe today. And I don't really see how the Army worrying about troops cutting themselves changed much. They adopted the P-38 after this, which leaves edges just as sharp. If it is safer it is in the motions needed to open the can. I would speculate that it was that soldiers were losing their can openers and using their knives or bayonets, and so the Army came up with a requirement for canned rations with a disposable can opener with each can. That was the P-38/P-50. Honestly, the Boy Scout Knife I have works just as well as a P-38, and the pivot isn't going to wear out after a few dozen cans like a P-38 does. And yes, I have real ShelbyCo ones.

I have this old boatsman folder with a lobster claw, had it for some time and tried to figure out how to use the can opener. Never managed it until I saw your vid. The one that invented the lobster claw should have been put in front of the judges in Haag for crimes against humanity. Thanks for sharing the trick.

i have a really old "scout knife" pocket knife where the can opener is just a small curved blade with a ridged backing. it has the letters "can opener" on it and its puzzled me how the heck that would work. the lobster thing you tested seems easier to figure out.

To open the can piece the can with the awl as close to the rim as possible. Put the cutting edge in the can have the “ hammer head “ on the rim , work the opener around fully. You should reduce the sharp edge considerably

using the awl to start it is a good idea :) but the sharp edge up is unavoidable its been recorded lots of soldiers got injuries from using this can opener...it became such a problem they changed it...

It is crude because you are using it completely wrong. The cans back then opened around the rim on the side, not the top. You plunge the blade in and then lift up with the flat part pushing on the side as a lever. NikGuyver has a vid demonstrating correct use. Old cans even had a line on label to show where to open thwm.

These kind are called lobster claw and the "new style" is called an eagle claw. That nub on the can opener supposed to ride on the lip of the can for more stability.

I've had better results from using just a normal kitchen knife. Certainly not safe but easier to control the cut, especially with cheaper knives that have a lot of spring in them.

That is not a big awl, it is actually a "deknoting" tool, it helps you undo knots... we use that alot on the ships edit: i love those can openers, you just use it wrong, use that "big awl" to punch a hole near the edge and lift with the hook on the edge that way will be much much of a cleaner cut

It is really depressing to me that we live in a world where people actually need to go to RU-vid because they bought a bunch of canned goods and then realized they don't even own a can opener. To have gone through life never having needed a can opener means you either eat out every single day, or you have someone cook for your. I assumed most people would be coming here because they were curious about these weird old can openers and curious how they are supposed to work, not because they actually didn't know how to open a can without a pop top (and anyone who has never encountered a regular can top is just as bad).

You’re holding it upside down. The end with the 90° is suppose to hook into the outside of the can. That is now your pivot point and pull up making the blade go into the can. Keep repeating. If you ever used a p-38 you know what I’m taking about

Wow, thats a terrible design, haha. I have used my Leatherman can opener on many a camping trip, especially years ago when not all the cans had pop tops. The Leatherman version is fantastic.

The guy don't use this "claw" can opener like was intended, it's for cut of the top of the can, bellow the top, not for cut the top lid. See a video showing the correct use with the Victorinox 1897 replica.
