How to Use watercolor pencils with adult coloring books

One of the MANY ways to use watercolor pencils wet with adult coloring books or any light paper. Use as little water as possible to avoid damaging the paper. Watercolor also works up VERY fast compared to colored pencil. So if you find color pencil slow you may like watercolor pencil instead. Please subscribe for more videos and to find out about the many giveaways I have on this channel!
The watercolor pencils I used in this video are the Faber-Castell Albrecht Dürer Watercolor Pencils

The rigger brush is used to make the rigging on the painting of a ship (rigging consists of ropes of many did different thicknesses.) it's usually a long, very slender, slightly stiff (to hold the shape of the "line") and it will hold a lot of paint in order for there not to be any breaks in the "line". If you color some black or blue watercolor pencil on some slightly textured plastic packaging (make shift pallette) and then wet this brush and then mix it withe the scribbled pencil you will load enough pigment to be able to make some lovely smooth, consistent lines. -- Hope this helped.

Just a heads up I use the water brush all the time with no problems of excess water. I don't squeeze them on the paper. I use the squeeze to rinse excess on a paper towel especially if changing color. The actual brush stays a little damp then and blends your colors well with out excess water. I have more control. I think the key is how you use it. Of course everyone is different just thought I share that so you can maybe try again.

This is the most helpful watercolor pencil video I’ve seen anywhere. I tried using my pencils before on a flower drawing I did, and I used too much and ruined the whole thing. Your demonstration with the correct brushes and small amounts of water here is invaluable to me!

I like a flat brush for turning on its skinny side and creating skinny lines. It’s nice to load up with a bunch of color and use it to draw straight lines, or stamp out a texture with lots of short lines

Great video! Thank you. I have the Fabre-castell polychromas on my wish list. For now I am using Windsor & Newton Cotman watercolours. Today I used a pen tip as opposed to a small round tip brush and I was amazed at how much more control I had putting the colour down into those tiny spaces. I am working on the Secret Garden book too. I'm looking forward to trying the pencils so that I can layer different colours into the design.

I noticed that when using the barrel ed you squeezed out the water, I was shown that you only have to squeeze the barrel once to release the water, which I have done, then the brush stays moist throughout while using😀

The Pentel waterbrush is great for many things.......but. When working on different papers, other than artist grade, you do not push down. Once the brush is wet the first time, that's it. Wipe it gently between colors on paper towel or a dedicated regular towel....... unless you are doing actual watercolor painting, when you use it like a watercolor brush. Do not squeeze........barely touch the brush to your piece after laying in the pencil and you'll find that it will work. If it doesn't, the result is usually due to a heavy hand. Please see, "The Mind of Watercolor," Adult Coloring book segment and what you'll be able to achieve with a bit of practice.

+Judith A Rowland Thank you so much for watching! Its funny because I did my video about 2 months before he did his. I have tried different things and even spent money buying smaller sizes of waterbrushes, but they just are not for me. I have tried the method you mention and other methods. but i just dont like the lack of control, I love the regular brushes and i know that the waterpens let you travel without a waterpot but i like having the control with the regular paint brushes and often switch between sizes to get the effects i want. water pens dont give me the amount of water i want when i want and i dont like not being able to choose between different degrees of water. One of my new friends who has a great artist loves them and doesnt mind the things i mind, but they are really not for everyone. but i didnt want the fact that i personally dont like them to prevent me from talking to people about them.

yes, the color chart is sooo important. Time consuming to make, but totally worth it in the end. I find round brush most useful with watercolor. I prefer filber over flat brush, and I only use them on filling large area or background. I'm not a big fan of those water brushes either. It could be convenient when you're out drawing watercolor, but for me cleaning the brush tip before dipping it in another color becomes a problem... Great video, I enjoyed watching!

+Catherine OAO thank you so much! I really am having a hard time find the "perfect" brush! i feel like they either cost $100 each or they dont seem good, I understand why some cost $100 each but i just dont need that for adult coloring book. so i just "make do". I havent tried a filber but i will. I find the flat to be not useful for coloring books or stamping, its just not often we are filling in those large large spaces. Yes the chart took like 3+ hours to make but it is soo worth it. I thought about doing a video just on making the chart but seemed like a boring idea.

your sable brushes will hold a lot of water within the bristles so that you do not have to keep having to dip into the water, but they do not 'let go ' of the water at once like the water pen.... even with the small tip brushes. The teeny brushes are for lining and detailing when painting. Such as adding tiny lines, or dots, or tiny lettering or tiny branches on trees etc. ( the very tiny brushes, smaller than what you have on here)

great job Karia, might want to look into a water pen that cannot be refilled, gives you mucho control, has 2 ends, one BOLD tip like your pen you have and fine tip that is hard but wonderful for all the small spaces. This one is made by FINESSE-Colored Pencil Blender Pen. They last a long time, and I have another one that I had picked up from a scrapbooking store. When you feel the tip, it hardly feels wet but it works amazingly, as you know, you don't need a lot of water, just FYI, Blessings!

+lotfang Same here. I don't need to squeeze the Derwent brushes unless I'm cleaning the brush or just putting some water in a travel palete. That Pentel waterbrush she has is too big for me, I usually stick to the #1 and #3 brushes ... love that little flat brush. But I still keep some ultrafine and oversized regular brushes. But the Derwent waterbrushes are amazing with Inktense pencils

This is a great vid and reminds me of something I've been meaning to ask around about ... in coloring books I sometimes like to use water-based blender markers instead of a paint brush or a waterbrush. I don't know if I'm supposed to be doing this or not but I find I get some rather extreme control and effortless ultrafine details with cheap water-based blender markers (these would be the Koi Coloring Brush Pen and Recollections double sided blender pen). Even the alcohol-based blender markers like Prismacolor and Winsor & Newton Brushmarker colorless have cool effects (though they do bleach the color a tad but sometimes that's exactly what I want). You have to be careful with the water-based markers because they will chew the paper up if you go over a spot too many times or press too hard. I've also been experimenting with the Inktense and some gamsol and blending stumps, with nice results

Thank you for this great video! It motivates me to use watercolour pencils also with my regular colouring books. I love the magic which happens in front of your eyes when the pigments get activated by water! I also have the Albrecht Duerer pencils and this cute little water cup. Regarding the water brush, i think that is a Pentel brush which you have and actually they are very well made. Usually it's not necessary to squeeze the brush. The water flows without squeezing. I use a small size brush which has a very fine tip and it works really fine. I love watercolour pencils so much that i'm looking for another set. Either the Mondeluz by Koh-I-Noor or the Aquarelle pencils from Lyra. Now i will have a look at your other videos. Happy colouring!

+Anja Meurer thank you so much for watching and commenting! I dont know what size i have and that might be part of the problem. I also think that while the continuous flow of water works ok for watercolor paper for this if feel like like because the paper is so thin, i want to use as little water as possible. BUT i do have a watercolor notebook so I will try it on that and see if thats a better fit. I LOVE the Faber Castell AD watercolor pencils. They are just great. but i do want to try other brands and they are on my to do list.

Forgot to mention, great videos! And yes watercolor is a difficult source for coloring books, the paper is thin too much water and color will bleed and warp. watercolor coloring is for extreme effects/shading / layers..
@ColoringKaria
@ColoringKaria 8 лет назад
+Nick M thank you so much! the great news is that since I did this video we are getting more and more books on thicker paper. Most still can't handle a LOT of water but a few can handle small amounts. I'm surprised strathmore hasn't come out at least with something. I think their 400 series watercolor paper would be great for some adult coloring book pages. I'm hoping it's a mater of time because it's soooo much easier to use real watercolor paper.

@DoloresJRush
@DoloresJRush 8 лет назад
Hi! I love my aqua brush because it holds just the right amount of water. The only time I squeeze water out of it is when I wipe off the pigment and squeeze the water out to rinse the color out. And I only use the very tip of the brush. Now, Bonnie Krebs of Art Impressions recommends a no. 4 round brush with artificial bristles. I see you have natural bristles. She recommends the artificial bristles because they bounce back quicker than the natural bristles and before she puts the paintbrush to the paper, she pinches off the bristles to get most of the water out. Have you tried the artificial bristles? Just curious to know what your take is between the natural and the artificial paintbrush bristles?

I forgot to mention the rigger brush is for laying down paint not really a brush for coloring in with, because it's long and thin, also watercolor paper is not easy to use for tracking, I get a blank and put it over Google images on flat pc screen turn up brightness and trace light with pencil then use watercolor to paint with..a light box works too but expensive

Size 6 and flat brushes are qgood for drawing with watercolor pencils. Rigger brushes are for making thin long lines. Water brushes are best for plain air(outside, on location painting.

I've seen some people that have backgrounds done with watercolor pencils that kind of have a tie dye look to them. I was wondering if you have seen pictures colored that way and what you think of them. I watched one tutorial that actually put the wet brush on the pencil. I am wondering if there are only certain brands of pencils you could do that with and would it compromise the use of the pencil for coloring thing in as you demonstrated here. Thanks so much for your EXTREMELY lovely and helpful videos!
@ColoringKaria
@ColoringKaria 8 лет назад
+Cassandra Fisher Hello, thank you so much for checking out my video! So I haven't seen that effect, but watercolor pencil is extremely versatile and you can see 7 more ways to use water color pencils in this video. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5ePK8DFclrc.html You should totally be able to use the pencils as a palette by brushing the pencil with a wet brush but if you watch the other video or even just look at the thumbnail you can see that different usage methods will use different amounts of water and have a different intensity of color. Using the pencils as a wet palette looks like it would use a fair bit more water than what I show here so you would have to test your paper and see if it would work with coloring books. Or if you would need special watercolor pencil.

+JORLA2854 Hello, I used two version sold in the USA of the same book: the secret garden by Joanna Bransford. There was the regular edition and the artist edition which is printed on card stock. But I did not reprint either version.

+ColoringKaria Thank you so much for your answer, I've just realized that an artist version was printed in one side only, I think I'll give it a try, even I have the other version. I've seen it on amazon. Good idea to print it in this version with a better paper. Thanks again !

Hi I bought a tin of Marte Monte watercolor pencils and don't have a name for each color, have you any tips on how I can make a sample page using the colors if they don't have a name
@ColoringKaria
@ColoringKaria 8 лет назад
+Kris Harkin Hello, so I went to the website and could not find a list of color names. So what I would do, is to make the color chart and look at the names used by Derwent or Faber Castell and try to match the names to the best you can. That's what I would do anyway.
@kriskmh1

Do you think you could use watercolour pencils like normal pencils? like blending and everything I'd like to buy some but I'd like to use them for both when I do watercolouring and normal colouring but I can't afford to buy normal and watercolour pencils. So I'm just wondering :o
@ColoringKaria
@ColoringKaria 8 лет назад
+brandyandwhiskerslol Yes I did a video on 7 ways to use watercolor pencils and using them as regular pencils is definitely one of the options. but they will still be slightly different, water color pencils are often softer, they can be more difficult to erase and you always have to keep it as far away from water as possible. this is my video the use of water color pencils as regular pencils is the first one. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5ePK8DFclrc.html

I just watched the video and wow I learned alot. I was thinking about buy faber castel watercolour pencils but where i live i doubt I'll find the bigger sets like 36 and 60 so I was looking on ebay and the ones in tins are like $30 for 36 while i found 48 colours in a cardboard box for the same price.. i was wondering if you would have any experience as if theres any difference between the two? like are the tin ones better quality? also this might be a stupid question but I live on an island so we have alooot of humidity here would that affect the coloured pages at all?
@ColoringKaria
@ColoringKaria 8 лет назад
So i checked the faber castell website and they do not make any alberdurer sets in cardboard box or in a 48 size. there IS a faber castell RED and BLUE lines and those do i think come in different sizes and cardboard box but i dont know anything about them. those are childrens and student grade respectively.
@brandyandwhiskerslol

maybe your squeezing to hard, as to why your getting to much water, i hold my water coloring brush down close to the brush its self. try again. i only squeeze when i want more water, then only away from my picture, after i have the brush as wet as i want i contiue painting. good luck.
