Nowadays there are fountain pens made to take G nibs so such modifications is unnecessary unless to it's to save money. www.parkablogs.com/content/quick-guide-osprey-pens-fountain-pens-nibs-and-nib-holders

Thank you so much! There were some parts that I never understood when other people were showing this technique of modification. Like how to properly pull out the nerve. In this video, I was still a little unclear on how to put the genie back in after you took out the old Nfb, but I think that part I can probably figure out. And this type of fountain pen is super affordable so if I mess it up there is room for error! Thanks again

Excellent overview. I write and sketch with a variety of FPs, none of which have very flexible nibs. A lot of my formal drawing is done with a crow quill in a holder, and I'm interested in using a flex nib in an inexpensive FP for drawing but I've heard very vocal opinions that the feed in the JinHao pens can be too slow for effective drawing. You touch on this very briefly here but I wonder if you could say in more detail whether the slow feed on the Jinhaos gets to be frustrating (or at least as frustrating as having to dip a nib being used in a holder). An perspectives on this you might offer would be greatly appreciated.
@teohyc
@teohyc 8 лет назад
+sdovas Using a Zebra nib like this for drawing is definitely going to be slow because the nib is too sharp and you won't want to damage it or scratch the paper. Also, the drawing techniques for such nib does not allow for fast drawing. The ink flow should be able to keep up because the drawing process is not that fast.
@sdovas
@sdovas 8 лет назад
+Teoh Yi Chie I know well the potential for disaster on bristol board with my various crow-quills (Hunt, Gillott, others, some perhaps older than you, even) but I'm glad to get your perspective on this. I can see how the temptation with a FP might be to try to draw faster, but did you find you had trouble tempering your drawing speed with this set-up you describe? thanks...
@teohyc
@teohyc 8 лет назад
I still draw at the same speed with the Zebra nib regardless on what it is put on. It's just much more convenient now because you don't have to refill it that often.
@sdovas
@sdovas 8 лет назад
+Teoh Yi Chie I wondered about the potential for dubious quality control at the Jinhao factory, and the 450 I just received from across the Pacific embodies Dubious. the thing LOOKS great, glossy black with gold tinted trim, the chevron on the tight clip, and that bitchin' 2-tone nib with the fake gold plate. But get down to working it?Pfffui. The converter leaks, and the line looks like you drew it in wet sand with your big toe. The 250s I gave my young daughters make beautiful lines compared to what comes out of this missile. (it's supposed to be the same nib, I thought) Maybe it's the feed, quality control lacking, because I then tried to swap out the nib for a Zebra G and it took way too long to get it to work at all, along with gushing 3 or 4 converters worth of ink. The nib did NOT seat well with the ZG, despite the testimony of many others to the contrary, and once I got it seated (after a lotta boiling water nib soaking) it flows so weakly that I'm tempted to plunge the damned pen into my eye socket in frustration. For all the time it took to get the new nib correctly seated, and all the ink I lost, and all the scratchy misery of dragging the ZG across the bristol at a snail's pace to keep my line intact, I'd have been better off dipping my Hunt or Gillott crow-quills into India ink. This is not a tool, it is a torture device. And I have no doubt that others have 450s that work fine. And that pisses me off too.
@teohyc
@teohyc 8 лет назад
I'm sorry to hear about that. Yeah, China brand pens can have some quality control issues. I've pens that break down after months of use, even without modification.

Help! an offer appeared on my FB page recently and I went for it, a fountain pen with a dip nib. The body is Jinhao X450 and it has the Zebra G nib. It came with cartridges, one of which I put in the pen. The problem, the frustrating problem, is that it will not consistently write for me. I just checked the alignment you talked about in this video and it is aligned correctly....so, what oh what can I do to make it work? thanks!!!!

I advise against using pliers straight on the nib and feed. Instead, get a bike tube or rubber sheet and use that to grip and pull out directly. Much safer and you'll be less likely to ruin anything. Since the feed was made to fit with the standard steel nib, it isn't made to flow fast enough to keep up with the flex. That's why it's railroading. You'll need to deepen the channels and likely remove any barriers on the converter side of the feed to allow the ink to build up instead of blocking it. Just a few thoughts for all of the folks asking about this combo.
@arboc89
@arboc89 4 года назад
What are the channels and other barriers you are referring to?
@ninobrn00
@ninobrn00 4 года назад
Bazyliszek the feed channel (where the ink travel). On some feeds, there are “road blocks” built in to slow the flow of the ink so it doesn’t come gushing out. It’s better regulated. When you add flex, you have to find a balance between getting enough ink when it’s flexed and not flooding the nib when no pressure is applied.

A small US company called Ackerman makes these sorts of pens (with an overfeed for extra ink supply) but their facebook page is full of people complaining about waiting for their order to be delivered. So I guess this video is right what I needed, cheers. edit: I just wanted to add that I've heard that the pens they make are really good, but it's no mass production, so the pens sell out and there are waiting times. @EPeltzer
@EPeltzer 2 года назад
The problem is the G nib is curved more tightly than the original nib for the Jinhao pens are really any number six nib pen. In order to slide it in you really have to flatten out the G nib somehow either in a vise or pliers or hammering it against a drill or something to make the curvature less pronounced. There are some other videos that show this flattening process for the jinhao x450 or 750 I have tried it on three Jinhao pens and there's just really no comfortable way to get it in without flattening the nimb a bit which is kind of tricky. I also finally bet bought an Ackerman pen that was designed purely for these nibs. The nib slips in and out much much more easily, however in my Ackerman and it was actually too loose & it tends to fall out, and the ink reservoir is too loose and tends to leak ink. I found ways to deal with these problems but still. Also I think in any of these pens the G nib is going to rust after 2 or 3 weeks of being constantly wet. It's most advisable to take it out of the pen when you're not using it, so that's a bit of a hassle unless you are just using it all the time. But the G nib has no equal as far as incredibly thin hairlines combined with good control over much thicker lines.

I suppose. But nowadays there are fountain pens with EF flex nibs that can mimic Zebra nibs. It's just more convenient when you don't have to keep loading ink to the nib. One example is Pilot Namiki with Spencerian modification www.parkablogs.com/picture/review-pilot-namiki-falcon-fountain-pen

There's one thing I'd like to ask. Most of my sketchbooks bleed when trying to ink with the Gnib, I understand that the quality of the paper is definitely causing it to bleed , but can I have some suggestions of sketchbooks that is slightly cheaper and perform well in inking ? I'm still a student so I couldn't really afford some expensive sketchbook. Especially when my country's currency is dropping badly. Thanks ;3

I've tried this on my own x750, but didn't like the small capacity of it. I managed to fit the G nib onto a Twsbi Vac700 after squeezing the body to flatten it slightly so the arc fits the feed. However, when I try to flex the pen, the ink flows in reverse, what could be causing this?
@teohyc
@teohyc 8 лет назад
Hmmm. That's weird. Sorry, I'm not sure why that is so.
@wilma0855
@wilma0855 8 лет назад
+Jason Tay I'm not sure but the Twsbi 700 is a vacuum type filler and I'm pretty sure when you push down to flex it is causing the pressure to change.

If the nib size on the Jinhao is a med then does the zebra G nib also have to be a medium?

If I'm not wrong, the Zebra nib only has one size. Med on the Jinhao means the tip is medium, not the size of the nib.

+artgapelove Maybe I'll do a video. But the general advice is to wash your fountain pens monthly. Just flush them with water will be sufficient. You can also get the Rotring Cleaning Fluid (for technical pens) for cleaning as I find that it can really dissolve ink particles quite well overnight.
