Watching a variety of videos on general clean & lube maintenance... this is a great instructional. Ideas: (1) It should help to apply some McLube Sailkote to the line prior to reinstalling... it's dry lube, won't attract dirt, and will make your lines slide more freely, will protect your lines from dirt (2) Use the opportunity of removed line to wash & lube blocks and tracks

Hi Chris, very useful tip and well filmed. Washing my dirty lines in my washing machine at home was one of the first tips I learnt when I become a boat owner. Funny enough, we must have cleaned the same dirt as I bought my boat at the Medway Yacht Club (where she is still nowadays). Fair wind and let us know in advance if you are passing by the MYC again.
@SailingBritaly
@SailingBritaly 4 года назад
Hi Vincent, thank you. :-) MYC is a lovely place and the adjacent trees make for a very beautiful setting, with birdsong to boot, but the boats on the outside of the yard under the trees do need a good scrub afterwards... Britaly is over on the continent now so it's doubtful that we will return to MYC, although life is unpredictable so never say never! Cheers, Chris

I've been doing this for years, here's an added tip, you can buy mesh laundry bags, in fact on a ship the crew use laundry bags so the laundry guy collects, throws all the bags in a commercial washer, then drier then puts back outside the crew members cabin door, I use one of those, and I use normal bio or non washing powder......love that little washing machine! 😛
@SailingBritaly
@SailingBritaly 4 года назад
Hi Ray, that's a great tip. I'm absolutely familiar with the mesh bags (I work offshore on vessels & platforms too) and they are better than pillowcases as they allow the contents to be washed more effectively. The washing machine has been a godsend with Emma on board. It has saved us a ton of time and a fortune in laundry fees! Cheers, Chris 👍
@rayhsetwo8594
@rayhsetwo8594 4 года назад
@@SailingBritaly Hi Chris, of course! You work with ROVs don't you? I think you mentioned that on a previous video, I don't work offshore anymore, I am a satdiver, I worked for Subsea7 before I retired from the game, in fact I also trained as a ROV pilot tech as I was in engineering before I worked offshore so hedged my bets, as it happens I went all in for sat diving instead of ROVs. And I still got my laundry bags, ha ha, I often use them for cleaning ropes and stuff, in fact I put several lines in Autumn and they don't get tangled much in those bags either. 👍

I have a cheap knock off Chinese version of your washer. I love the thing. I'm in apartment life for now, but I think a home who rents should have one. It's crazy light, used hardly any water, and I've even taken it camping to do washing while out in a tent. It's awesome to just have, and keeps me from spending $5 a week at the complex laundromat.
@SailingBritaly
@SailingBritaly 4 года назад
Hi there, our washing machine is a cheap Chinese product too. I've seen inside it and it is the perfect example of how to make something as simple as possible. Two motors (one direct drive for the spinner, belt drive for the washer), a mechanically operated drain valve, a mechanically operated brake on the spinner, a coupe of microswitches and a little electronic board. There isn't much to go wrong. Great design! They can save you a fortune and a lot of wasted time in doing laundry elsewhere. Cheers, Chris 👍

Great vid! But the real question, everybody is thinking, but to scared to ask is: why do you use a halyard line as a (main) sheet line? Typical sheets have a different, softer grip (special kinda braid), which makes working with them so much nicer than with the rather slippery halyard lines.

Interesting and informative. I'd be interested in knowing if you'd ever tried this in a conventional washer. Your 12V machine was by comparison very gentle indeed. I tried this once with some old line and was shocked to discover that I'd ruined the line. I used a conventional North American washer, gentle cycle, and a small amount of detergent. I'd wondered if the detergent was too strong, or just simply wrong for the line. The line became extremely hairy after the wash. It was a total write-off. I've been reluctant to wash a line ever again. Have you had experiences like mine? Rupe in Thunder Bay, Canada
@Rupe51
@Rupe51 4 года назад
One thing that occurs to me now ... the line I tried washing may have been severely degraded by UV. And maybe all it took was a wash to destroy it. Hmmm ... Subscribed!
@SailingBritaly
@SailingBritaly 4 года назад
Hi Rupe, I reckon a pillowcase would be essential in a household washing machine. Our washing machine is extremely gentle by comparison. Putting a line in a pillowcase (with a sock cable-tied or stitched to any captive hardware) would no doubt reduce the abrasion of the cover during the wash. The kind of lines we are talking about here would otherwise be beyond saving anyway, so in the worst case you buy a new line, just like you would if you didn't attempt to wash the old one. Welcome aboard and we hope you enjoy our future videos! Chris (plus Rossella & Emma) 😊 p.s. Canada is one of the very best countries I have ever visited, I love it!

Vinegar, the "edible" acid that is an excellent grease remover without the usual risks of an acid cleaning agent. I doubt it would harm the lines though unless they are oily or greasy I don't think vinegar would help the cleaning much. On a side note: vinegar and water will clean deck and hull from the sooty muck you get when in a busy commercial port. just scrub the mix with a soft bristled brush or cotton mop on the area to be cleaned. 1 cup vinegar to 5 gallons water ( 250 ml to 20 l ).

Hi Jaqui, we are also fans of vinegar. It has many uses on board, and I can't even think about eating chips (in the British sense of the word) without it! Cheers, Chris 😊

LOL, did you really think you were gonna preempt any hindsight comments by all of the armchair skippers?!? 😂😂😂 As I was watching this I wondered why you didn't tie a messenger line to the end so that rethreading the sheet would be a no brainer. In my case, also faster than checking the video/pics a couple dozen times before I was doubly sure I had it right. 🤔🤔 😂 While the sheet was washing it would be a good idea to turn that shackle into a useable spare. Since that part of the rig is currently disabled you might as well PM the traveler and replace that shaggy line as well. The new looking sheet is going to make the traveler look really tired and unhappy if you don't / didn't . 😉😁 Loving what you do and looking forward to more of the same. Fair Winds from the northern Gulf of Mexico. 🙋‍♂️

We've also heard that it's okay to put your (not brand new) sails in the washing machine with non-bio. Have you ever tried it, or do you have any thoughts about this?

That washer is so tiny! That's got to be incredibly useful on the boat. Most units I've seen are way too large! You have to have like a 14 meter boat to fit them. What's the brand name of the washer?
@SailingBritaly
@SailingBritaly 4 года назад
Hi Dan, it is pretty small and It is light as well, so it is easy to move around if you prefer to stow it away when it isn’t in use. We love ours! I’ve linked to our exact washer and some similar ones in the video description. Cheers, Chris 👍

No worries Dan, YT does a good job of hiding the video description whereas we would love it to be more prominent.

Hi there, here are the new links (description updated): 🇬🇧 amzn.to/2QiRA6T (No longer available but you will be shown similar alternatives which are available to buy now.) 🇬🇧 This model is similar to ours, but is currently better value: amzn.to/2UeGMcw These links support our channel. Happy washing! Chris

Adding a fabric softener in the last cycle will really help also.

Next time try fabric softener. It will break down the line a bit but with modern lines that’s not a problem.

@SailingBritaly 4 года назад
Hi Joe, solo sailing vids coming soon. I'm afraid Rossella & Emma will be absent for a while as I recorded a bunch of videos on my own (I blitzed the refit then sailed across the channel on my own in October, both of which were much safer / simpler / quicker without having Emma on board, much as it pained me to be away from them). In 2020 the three of us will travel from Belgium to the Med via the inland waterways, so the real stars will return then! Cheers, Chris 👍

Evidently we've done a terrible job of communicating this! :-D Britaly is a floating island which is 50% British and 50% Italian, where Rossella and I can feel fully at home and neither culture has any more weight than the other. Fair winds, Chris, Rossella & Emma :-)

Hi Joey, we have an extraordinarily busy life and it is almost impossible to keep tabs on where we are at any given moment in time. (We drove from Italy to the UK again a couple of weeks ago, via Belgium which is where the boat currently is) There will be some solo sailing videos coming up soon, then in 2020 the three of us will be making our way to the Med from Belgium via the inland waterways. Video time and real time are always out of sync though. Cheers, Chris

Instead of taking a video you could attach a thin line to the end of the sheet an pull it through as you remove the sheet and use that thin line to pull the sheet back when it is ready.

Absolutely Stephen, this is a much better way. I already had a camera in my hand videoing the area though, so I was taking the quickest option under my very specific set of circumstances. 😂

Ciao Giovanni, grazie mille! Buon 2020! ⛵️🌅👍

Yeah, I know this one guy he pays me every now and then a little sum of money to do small jobs on his boat because hes too lazy. Like cleaning the boat, taking a sail down and fold it up, replace a halyard etc. And we agreed on 30 quid per hour. So I told him it took me 7 hours until they were clean and he just gave me 210 quid for it and all I did was just put it in the washing machine lmao. Some people have too much money for their own good. Haha But it is just that simple.

Please be conscious of where your water is going if your going to do this! We have a huge issue of micro fibers in the ocean already. And this just dumps loads! Please if your going to use this method at very least try dump your water in some bushes or something.
