This video focuses on two things: how to water fig trees in containers and when to water figs in containers. Watering fig trees in containers can be tricky because it can be difficult to tell when a fig tree is dry and needs water.
Often, gardeners wait until the tree is so dry that the leaves begin to wilt, or they jump the gun and overwater the tree. Neither is good! Letting a fruit tree dry out can damage the roots and the plant, and overwatering can cause suffocation, root rot and death. This video will teach you a few telltale signs to look for so you know when to water fig trees, and you'll be watering fig trees in pots at the appropriate time. You'll be watering fig trees in containers like a pro!
While this video is about watering fig trees in containers, you can apply these principles to watering fruit trees in general for just about any fruit tree grown in a pot.
If you have any questions about how to water figs, how to grow figs, growing figs in ground or growing figs in containers, any of the things I am growing in my garden, are looking for any garden tips and tricks, or have questions about gardening and organic gardening in general, please ask in the Comments below!

Thank you for the great information! I just purchased my first fig tree, (Chicago Hardy) and it is showing signs of stress. The leaves are drying out, and the figs on it are looking sad....It made a long way from CA to MN during the worst heat wave. I hope it will make it now that I know what to look for. I am going to follow your instructions and hope for the best.

Excellent example of watering pots. The same thing with a dry garden. Take your time watering. That's why drip irrigation works so well for ground gardens.
@TheMillennialGardener
@TheMillennialGardener 4 года назад
That's one thing I meant to mention and forgot - if you have all mature trees, it may be best to set up drip irrigation with a very slow drip - like 0.5 gal/hr drippers - and let each slowly run for 60-120 minutes, depending on the side of your pots. It works well for container gardening if your containers are all the same size, trees are all the same size and dry out at similar rates. If your trees are all different sizes like mine, though, you may be better off manually watering so you can check each container and see if they need water first, though.

Good watering tips, The first buckets I used for plants\trees I drilled my holes on the bottom, since then I have learned that having the holes in the sides like you do helps retain some water in the bottom longer. I now have to use planter bottoms under those so they keep water. Should mention that in one of your videos....some peeps may not have that little nugget of knowledge. Tell Dale we enjoy seeing him too. lol
@TheMillennialGardener
@TheMillennialGardener 4 года назад
I actually have holes in the bottoms and sides. Drainage is everything. I have a how-to video on how I make them here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qkO0BszVqMQ.html Dale appreciates all of his fans and says thanks!

@@TheMillennialGardener Ok....I have been doing my latest buckets with holes about an inch from the bottom, When I'm gone for extended periods on the really hot dry days....I know they have a small reserve if the tops get dry. I agree though....cant have too much, drainage is key...A lot of my fruit trees are planted on hills for that reason. (lots of clay here)
@TheMillennialGardener
@TheMillennialGardener 4 года назад
My advice is to add the holes in the bottom because if you only put holes in the side an inch from the bottom, that bottom inch will become nasty, silty sludge that may become anaerobic from lack of oxygen. That could cause a rot condition. Similarly, if you only add holes to the bottom, they could become plugged from the silt buildup. I really encourage holes in the bottoms and sides for better aeration and drainage.
@ktrain4996
@ktrain4996 4 года назад
@@TheMillennialGardener You have a good point there....I have not noticed any yet....but I can see how that could happen. This fall I am planting 4 from pots to ground, then putting new ones in the pots\buckets....I will try both side and bottom. Thanks.
@TheMillennialGardener
@TheMillennialGardener 3 года назад
How cold is your climate? If you get hard freezes in the fall, I suggest waiting until spring to plant. Figs are generally freeze hardy to a point, but you want the tree to be established before they encounter hard freezes. If you're in a frost-free climate, disregard my comment.

I bought a 3 in 1 soil tester meter on Amazon that has eliminated much of my overwatering, and I also find the pH function useful.
@TheMillennialGardener
@TheMillennialGardener 2 года назад
I think those soil testers are fine for shallow plants, particularly indoor plants, but watch out, because they don't reach the bottom of deep pots. They can register as "dry" in the top layer of soil while the bottom of your container is accumulating silty muck.

How large and how many drain holes do you put into your 5 gallon buckets of figs? Do you do root pruning and if you do would you do a video on that? Thanks so much for these very informative videos.
@TheMillennialGardener
@TheMillennialGardener 4 года назад
I show you how to make the buckets here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qkO0BszVqMQ.html I believe there are 9 holes with a 7/8" bit. If you choose to use 5 gallon paint buckets like I do, you can go the first season without root pruning, but after that, you're going to need to prune them annually. I've noticed the figs I didn't prune aren't nearly as vigorous as they were the previous year because they're too root-bound. If you want to root-prune less, you will need larger containers. Figs are extremely vigorous and need to be cut back annually to keep their vigor, or planted in-ground (where they truly prefer to be). Thanks for watching!

This looks like deep watering. On another video of yours you said you water containers 1-2 time's a day when it's really hot. When you water twice a day, are you more just watering the top surface so your feeder roots in the cantainers stay healthy & you deep water like this video other days when the media pulls away from the edges of the bucket? I live in St George, Utah zone 8a.... but I'm getting 93° temps now & 110° plus in June-August. @EnlightenmentGarden waters 4-5 times a day for her in ground trees, but only for 4 minutes at a time (approximately 1 gallon each time). She noticed if her feeder roots dried out, he plants are more stressed to grow the feeder roots than fruit production. Thanks for your Awesome videos, ive truly learned a ton & can't wait for my 5 Fig trees to ripen... patiently waiting 😁

I believe you have started using drip irrigation for your potted figs and maybe the in-ground ones as well. Rain can be troublesome if we get too much. I am thinking of making a cone from light plastic to go over the pot to direct the great majority of rain water from the pot. I can regulate the drip irrigation to desired levels and cover it as well with the plastic. I have rabbits that will gnaw on the bark so I use tree guards. The cone can rub against the guard and not chafe the trunk.
@TheMillennialGardener
@TheMillennialGardener 2 года назад
I haven't run drip lines to my containers, yet. That'll be a "next year" project. I can say that I think the effect of watering figs is vastly overstated. I don't see a problem with watering them generously. In fact, I see the opposite as being true: fig trees take on rust and drop their fruits if they are underwatered. I'd actually rather over-water my actively growing fig trees during the heat of the summer than under-water them. What I find is the most problematic is getting the figs themselves wet. When the figs get wet, terrible things happen. Trying to put the trees themselves under cover, then drip irrigating, will be very helpful.

Thanks this was super helpful! I have some young cuttings that are rooted and up potted. Would you recommend more frequent watering for these? I’ve been watering when the top layer of compost looks dry rather than the medium pulling away from the pot.
@TheMillennialGardener

Only in the very beginning when you first transplant the cutting - maybe the first week - do I encourage keeping the soil very moist. Once the roots take hold and the trees start putting o new green growth, you shouldn't water them more than necessary. You don't want to encourage rot, and younger roots are more susceptible to rot. Usually, small trees take awhile to dry out containers. I suggest mulching them with at least 2 inches of mulch, then checking underneath the mulch to check for soil moisture.

Great video! Since I'm reduced to using a watering can, I go by and prime them all and come back and water deeper also. I'm too nervous to let my medium get to the point where it's pulling away from the sides of the pot though. The trees seem to do fine getting a bit of water each day during this heat. Hoping rain on the way with the hurricane, but can skip the damaging winds hopefully.

I saw...things in the Gulf aren't looking good for next week. My prayers are with you. The next storm pushing off West Africa isn't looking good, either. We'll be in MJO Phase 1/2 when that storm pushes off, so it could become a major hurricane. A watering can? That sounds awful...can't you get yourself a long hose? It'll save you so much effort. That sounds really rough.

@@TheMillennialGardener I thank you for your prayers. I don't think we'll get anywhere near the winds out of this storm that you got, so I'm okay with that. Figs aren't fruiting really (only 3 months in pots) therefore, the rain will be good, as long as it's not 50" of rain. Since I live in an apt, there isn't outside water faucet where I can hook a hose up. Guess it's a good thing I only have 6 figs trees, huh! Got 2 citrus and the dwarf toms, so, I'm okay. All and all, I'd rather be swimming for exercise, but pools closed.

@@shashakeeleh5468 all it takes is one bad gust. I'm concerned that there may be two hurricanes in the Gulf simultaneously, but at the same time, I'm very curious.

@@TheMillennialGardener I understand and have a way to protect them somewhat. Went thru Harvey and a bunch of others and did well. Since these trees are less than a meter, I can drag them under the apt breezeway for cover, but that might increase the wind. Will have to play it by ear. Yes, weather around the globe very interesting and very horrible; from fires in CA to massive flooding in China. Not sure that most people understand just how devastating all this will be in the long run. Good thing you don't live in NK, else poor Dale might be (on) toast.

For a couple bucks u can buy an adapter to put on your inside faucet and then a hose will screw on. And u can buy short hoses or long, whatever length u need to reach your trees. I have one on the utility sink faucet so I can wash the dogs outside and not in totally cold water-works great! Be safe!

Hey man, as always enjoy watching your videos…lots of good info. I’m beginning planting some fruit trees in my backyard this coming Fall for the first time (You know they say you have to be prepared in case of starvation 🙂). Just kidding, anyway I would like to know how you protect your trees from birds. I’m watching lots of videos now on this topic but would be interested in your opinion. BTW, we are neighbors…I live in Leland, Brunswick county.

Any advice on cloth pots? I'm in the Bay Area and have two fig trees in 7gal green cloth pots on their second year of growth from big old branches trimmed off another tree. The person I got them from last winter said the cuttings are actually more like 5-6 years old but they've died back a couple times (maybe from frost) in the Sonoma Valley.

I also check for moisture by picking up my containers (I use 3 to 7 gallon grow bags with handles). I know what the weights are for a dry vs hydrated container.

Very helpful video! Are you concerned that one fig is getting rootbound? Will you up pot it or plant it into the ground?

I am thinking of growing the Chicago Hardy in a container like the Home Depot 5 gallon pail here in the Detroit area, (Zone 6a). What is a reasonable amount of figs to expect from a single tree? And...if I plan on putting the dormant tree in my garage over winter should I perhaps choose a different variety better suited to a container? Thanks for the awesome videos! Big fan!
