How to water Phalaenopsis orchids - tips for a healthy orchid

Phalaenopsis orchids are the most popular orchids we can find. This is mainly because, apart from their beautiful long lasting flowers, they are quite easy to keep in a normal home. The trickiest part is watering. There are many theories on how to water these orchids, so today I will present you the safest routine I have found with my orchids. Enjoy!

@@anaphylaxis6599 if the roots are squishy and brown cut them off, but you dont need a different pot or new orchid mix to do so, simply remove the orchid cut the bad roots and carefully "plant" your orchid into the same potting container using the same mix

I was handed an orchid by my mother-in-law as an unexpected gift and it was like being handed a baby and told to look after it. I had no knowledge, tools or equipment. My brother got me a white orchid that has been dyed blue for my birthday. I would never buy artificially colored flowers for myself, but I know it will revert back. I am determined to keep it alive! Just put it in water and started a timer for 10 minutes. :)

I was one of the ice cube waterers (just following the directions that came with the orchid). I've had it bloom 3 years in a row. I didn't know it came in a separate pot. Thank you for the better instructions.

The tip about root color as a watering indicator is a real winner. It seems that by accident I've been watering my orchids properly. "Benign neglect" isn't a bad thing, if you don't overdo it.

I live in Australia and was gifted a very large orchid (5 orchids) planted in a ceramic pot which I think will need to be translpanted as I think the medium is only sphagnam moss and planted directly in the pot 🙁 Thank you for your step by step tutorials - keep them coming as they are very informative.

This is the best video I have seen on watering this type of orchid. Everyone else tells you to give 3 ice cubes per week and doesn’t explain why. You explained what to look for and why you use these methods and now I feel confident to give better watering to my orchid. I can’t wait to continue my collection.

Great info. I am starting to realize its a miracle that mine is growing a flower stem, let alone surviving. I thought spraying the leaves was helpful and the roots are soaking in water most of the time! It also badly needs to be repotted. With your advices, I feel more equipped to care for it. Thank you. Finally I found someone who waters their orchids like me. I'm still pretty new to the world of orchids but I have one that has been blooming for over a year and I do the same exact watering method, even though everyone else seems to do it weekly and only a cup or two at a time, which to me is crazy b/c then the orchid is sitting in the water. Though I never really thought about the hardness or mineral content of my water. I use tap, but have used bottle here and their for touch up watering or for creating a humid climate inside the decorative pot that has a raise incline to keep the orchid from actually getting wet but those are good and useful tips that I can know take into consideration. I also never consider not pouring water directly over the leaves and such, I've never tried to do it on purpose but also never notice if I did. Great info thanks!!

Thanks for all the information. I have always set out my water in jugs to water all my house plants and when I started with orchids I didn't have luck and I did try the ice cube method and as you said "No good" so I starting watering by putting all my orchids and my air plants all on a cookie sheet and water them all at the same time and either let them set all day or even overnight before putting them back in their respective places. I appreciate your videos as they are very informative and finally I have success!

Thanks! All the guides I found said to check the color of the roots but they never mentioned if i should be looking at the arial roots or the ones in the pot. You just saved me from giving my new orchid water it doesn’t need.

I was just gifted a Phal she is so pretty. Normally I'm not very god at caring for plants so I decided to RU-vid. I am so glad I found your site. My phal was potted in really tight moss most of the roots had rotted with help from your videos I just repotted her. Fingers crossed she does well.

Wow, Thank you I am new to growing Orchid plants and the like you said the clerk in the store told me to put ice cubes in my orchid plants and it was working for a while but I was still wondering when to water them cause she said that it doesn't like too much water so I said I will just watch to see if the plant will show me and now I looked at this morning and two of the blossoms are withering and I quickly ran in here to the computer to find out what to do so now I see the whole story of my plants. I've been doing this for years, I'm so glad, your proving my point correct. However I'm only soaking for about 2 minutes at a time about every 8 to 9 days. I also use luke warm tap water. A local orchid grower said our tap water is perfectly fine for watering.I'm in the process of rehabilitating a friends phals that were planted in rotted moss with old planting medium and shipping peanuts in the bottom of the pot. Repotted all in fresh chips in new plastic pots, I'm a believer in letting the light get at the roots. Also these were watered with ice so I have soaking these from the bottom also.

This video is so informative!! I was afraid that I'm not watering my mini phalaenopsis Orchid properly, because it's in a small pot with not the soil that she has in her orchid pot, but sphagnum moss. Good to know that it's not needed to soak it, but just add a little bit of water from the top.

Hello! Thank you so much for posting all these videos. They've been incredibly helpful! I've been watching many of your videos in trying to save my orchid. I hadn't repotted it in three years (terrible I know...) and it was accidentally placed in direct sunlight for a while as well. It was looking really bad and so I just repotted it. I followed your repotting video on how to do it and there's a couple good roots left. Do you have any tips on how to ensure that it recovers and grows new roots? There's still four dark green leaves but one is becoming very limp and leathery. Thanks again!
