If you mess up a water wash dont panic...1st wash out hopper just as if you were going to prime...2nd refill with water...then pump pump forward again..may have to bump it back and forth a couple of times but has always comes undone for me
I’m so open minded to new things, and I’m like you Scott that was insanely fast. I believe the types of aggregates/mixes in different regions are what make this possible. I just can’t see myself attempting it though. It’s just a phone call I wouldn’t want to make to my boss if I did something wrong 😂😂
I’d be interested to see a guy down in Texas or Georgia post up a video of water washing. I have a buddy in Utah (fairly coarse concrete I believe) who sent me a video of water-washing his 58M, then proceeded to open up the deck pipe and prove how clean it was.
@@canadianconcretepumper1979 that’s the kind of thing I’m dying to see myself! I have a couple friends in Texas and Georgia, and that course aggregate and manufactured sand looks like garbage! So happy we have river rock/river sand mixes. Those poor guys don’t have it easy with the mixes I’ve seen
@@LilPaulTheDrummerBoy Oh dude, if I relocated to one of the aforementioned regions to pump concrete, I’d be a rookie all over again. We have it so easy with our mixes/materials around here.

1st off nice video explained very well. We water wash back in to the mixer trucks always have a hose on smallest 3 inch hose. We pump down to top of cylinders fill with water take 2 strokes forward refill hopper and pump down till water hits the inside of the mixer trucks drum. Makes a very distinctive sound or sound difference then in reverse wide open. And yes, the same at the end after five strokes in reverse even six three strokes forward then back into reverse to make sure deck pipe is clean. If your pump has the big water box, yes very nice to fill your own hopper faster. If not, use the mixer trucks water. Most companies in our area leave the last two mixers so The pump has plenty of water to water wash. And have ran across town driven 30, 45 minutes with the hopper full of wash every once in awhile at a red light and jump out throat in PTO. Two strokes in reverse. Get back in, take it out of PTO and drive off.
This is useful when you rock pack sucking back as well. It will wash cement off rocks while recirculating and water washing. When you back to the yard, it's just clean rocks. Texas mud has gotten pretty rocky nowadays
@@rickrodriguez8493 I’ve often wondered how risky it is to water-wash with some of those coarse mixes which you guys have down in your neck of the woods.
Try dumping your hopper and washing out as normal, then putting your sponge in the transition 90 like you were going to push a steel ball through it. Close everything back up and push it through relatively slowly. I never have any problems this way.
Sweet. I only water washed one time during my short time as an operator and it was nerve wracking to say the least and I even had professional supervision 🤣🤣 awesome video though
Appreciate that brother. I had always wanted to try it, but said I would never do so until I could actually see it with my own eyes right in front of me. I’ve done it a few times since, but for the most part still just suck sponges. It is nice to now have the confidence to water wash when situations arise which may call for it.
I have water washed before, only when I'm in a situation where I can. I'll pump all the way down, stop on a forward stroke, drop hopper, then fill it with water and pump forward till water comes out, then back, then forward until water, then back. Pipes have always been good. It doesn't bother me how to clean out, just want to be able to prime put on my next job.
Most Lou what has prevented me from doing this is not having access to a good/fast delivering source of water. I’m definitely going to give it a try sometime in the future.
Obviously it works but I don’t think it’s for me. But after watching this method I’m less fearful of trying the bucket wash. 😂 Love the tips and tricks videos Scott!
Took me awhile to warm up to the bucket suck as well. Now that I’m fairly comfortable doing so, I feel as though I’m finally ready to face my water-wash demons 😂
I water wash 90% of the time. If there's a puddle big enough I suck that back. If they need the concrete leftover and the water will get it to wet I suck a sponge. I teach new operators all three. Mostly run a putz 56.
Fully agree. I think that being competent in all three methods is definitely the way to go. The more tools us operators have in our arsenal, the better. Great comment 👌👌👌
I have tried sucking a bucket twice. Rock jam both times. The most I have gotten away with is just enough to clean the tip hose. Most of our mixes are larger sharp Stones with terrible sand.
I've never operated a boom pump, but I have a line pump with a swing tube, so it's interesting to see how different the process is. I normally just fill the hopper and pump it out twice, drop the plug on the bottom, drop all the mud out and rinse the hopper, wash out the open piston and cycle back and forth till they're clean and the swing tube is empty, then pop the plug back in and fill the hopper and pump it out as many times as it takes for the water to come out clear. Some days it takes longer to wash than it does to pump.
@@cincoog5794 I rarely ever have to wash into trucks. I live in rural NM and do some work in TX too, so I usually just wash on flat ground on fields or in dirt alleys. The only times I really wash into trucks are when I work in fancy neighborhoods, but if it clogs, I reverse the pump, smack the hoses with a sledge until I find the spot where it feels hard and the sound changes, and get back to it
@@cincoog5794 I've never had a hose explode on me. Typically if it gets plugged, I hit reverse for a good 4-6 strikes to relieve pressure and disconnect from the machine outward and test every connection to find where my plug is if I can't find it with the sledge. Another thing with the washout hooks is that in the event that I have to use it, I just tie it to the bumper bar on the truck so that it can't hop out if it gets clogged and whips out. I tied a super tight knot to the handle on the hook so that I can't take it off and will never forget to tie it. Idk how many people do this, but these are tricks my dad showed me when I was 9 and still do at 22 now that he's gone
Yeah bro that tip really helped me today I live in ca so we have to wash back into the trucks everyday and there’s times the pump washes back like butter but there’s days it’s just wants to act up and clog & I’m also 22 but I started pumping at 19 when I joined a company sorry for your loss brotha stay strong 💪🏼
Nope for me. But if it you do it JUST RIGHT all the time and have the water, blowout location and don't transport with a full hopper, go for it! Also, I've never considered throwing the pump back in forward for a few strokes then back in reverse, interesting. I guess that would push more water up and over the material in the deck pipe? Thoughts? Also also, what if you blow out the boom before filling the hopper so there is less concrete on the ground? Not enough head pressure to separate the concrete/water? Another buddy of mine had mentioned that the sucking back a few strokes and then once again pushing ahead before the final reversing of the pump is also critical because there’s typically a vacuum present on the first round of reversing and water remains trapped in the boom. I’m guessing that blowing the boom out entirely is not recommended as there could be risk of water pushing past/over top of pockets of concrete rather than pushing against a solid mass of concrete (just my little theory here).
@@canadianconcretepumper1979 The guy that trained me years ago water washed all the time, but differently. I'll try this iteration when the opportunity presents itself. Keep us posted on your next attempt, and the prime out the next day!
Absolutely 100% find an outfit with a small line/trailer pump and spend at least 2 years on said unit before getting your feet wet on a boom. Line-pumping will gain you invaluable experience which will pay dividends if/when you decide to move up to a boom. There’s stuff you’ll knowledge you’ll acquire within 6 months running a line-pump which you may not learn in 10 years of running a boom.
In terms of dollar amount it's very similar (probably actually even slightly higher), except that they're obviously being paid in US dollars, basic goods and services are roughly 30% less than in our area, and housing costs are about 1/3rd. The lower mainland has become about the most non-sensical place to live/work in the North America, IMO.
The only problem I see for me using this method is that we most of the time suck sponges at our last job of the day at the job site then drive to the plant to wash out which is usually not a long drive. We would have to unfold the boom to wash out like that which would take longer.
@@canadianconcretepumper1979 suppose we could do that if there wasn't left over concrete to be used in the mixer. We rarely have a place to wash out at job sites.
@@KincromeJacko that was my similar experience when I once tried this some 15 years ago. Admittedly though, I did most everything wrong in comparison the how Michael does it in the video here.
Only thing I would say it that the washout is much easier (sand/rock/gravel). But yes, it’s an ongoing debate (water-wash/bucket-suck/suck a sponge) and I don’t think there’s really any one definitive “right answer”. Really comes down to the particulars in your area I believe. Just for the record, I’m a sponge-sucker 😁😁😁
Seems as though most everyone in Cali is on the water-wash program. Do you guys typically have a water truck on site? I’ve spoken to a few who say that it’s fairly common place for the region.
The only thing I do differently is I will Resurculate the mud to water wet and at full volume then water wash. The trick to it is to go forward and without hesitation and reverse
@canadianconcretepumper1979 they ran it wet back to the yard and still got your video ??? Thay Must have wet the mud or retarded it before they folded it up to transported
@canadianconcretepumper1979 well that was cool of them!!! We water wash primarily !!! Rarely do we pull the ball so we carry them as a last resort, our mud is so sticky (8000 lb to 12000lb) mud for a mine . The pipes would need 3 or 4 balls to clean the pipes to my liking, we even tried a go pig
I had predicted this to be my most heavily debated video yet. I was not wrong. Here’s my idea for some future content: Take no less than two dozen pump operators and eight flats of beer, then lock them into a hotel banquet room for 3-6 hours to debate the effectiveness of sucking back a sponge versus water-washing. Last man standing wins!!! 😁😁😁
