Don't get us wrong...linseed oil is great and we use it extensively!
This is an option for:
- when you can't source linseed oil (Alsi in Nepali) readily
- or the weather is wet & humid like now because raw linseed oil can take a long time to dry
- and most importantly, budget is low 😀
It works just as fine on bare earthen walls (as demonstrated) and on lime plasters.
*Do note that the sheen is better on lime plastered walls.
Hope this is helpful one way or the other. If you need more information, send us your queries over DM or Whatsapp. We're always happy to help❤️

Will this affect the cooling system by the porous walls of the mud house?

Interesting. A soap/lime reaction is the basis for some waterproofing methods like tadelakt, but this is the first time I've seen anyone use it with clay. I am curious if there is any chemical reaction like there is with lime, or if the soap itself is the waterproof layer? In either case it seems like reapplying soap as needed over the years would be simple.

I had the same question so I looked it up. Black soap is soap made using the ash of plantain skins, palm tree leaves, cocoa pods and shea tree bark another version use the ash of camwood. It is then made like traditional soap mixing the alkali from the ash with fats and oils like coconut or palm to make soap. Any kind of natural "Wood ash" soap may be worth trying. Hope it helps.
