Learn how-to manufacture paraffin based wax cotton using a solar wax melter. Watch how I make wax cotton. Maybe this video will give you some good ideas. Do not put wax cotton clothing into the dryer. To clean wipe with a damp towel.
The outside temperature needs to be at least 25 Celsius or 77 Fahrenheit with no clouds in the sky for this process to work. Strong sunlight is required to make the process work.
Remember that paraffin wax and also other waxes and oils are flammable. Do not use the clothing in any situation where there is the possibility of the clothing catching on fire. For example, wearing wax cotton clothing while welding is probably a bad idea.
When I make the clothing, I only melt wax outside and I always use a double boiler to ensure that the wax doesn’t get too hot and starts to burn. I make sure that I am in an open space outside away from anything which can catch on fire. I ask myself the question: “If this project starts to burn by accident, will this cause a problem?” I always have a fire extinguisher and shovel easily accessible when I am working on the wax cotton. I know how to use my fire extinguisher.
The game plan is to take 100% cotton clothing, melt paraffin wax and paint the entire garment with wax. The wax covered garment is then placed into a solar wax melter until the wax on the garment melts and is absorbed by the cotton clothing, almost like a sponge absorbing water. Once the clothing is taken out of the solar melter and cools down, it will become very stiff. The stiff clothing then has to be broken in. Once the clothing is completely saturated in wax, it will become wind and water resistant and is now useful in cold, wet and windy conditions.
The clothing material should be 100% cotton, it should be woven, not knitted. The cloth must have a tight weave. I think thicker or heavier cotton material such as canvas works best. However other cotton materials such as twill can also work well. There are many different types of tightly woven cotton material. Experiment and find out which material works best for you. In my experience, the thicker woven cotton materials work best when using the paraffin process.
I size my clothing a couple of sizes bigger than what I normally wear. The clothing should be very big and very loose, because this allows a warm air bubble to form inside the clothing, which is very important in cold weather conditions. The oversized clothing also makes it easier to move around, because the clothing can be a little bit stiff. The result is almost like wearing a wax treated canvas tent. During really cold weather, I like to wear wool underneath the wax cotton clothing. The idea is to have the jacket drape down over the pockets and zipper of the pants, because these areas sometimes leak water.
This is primarily cold weather clothing. In my experience, this clothing does not function well in hot weather, it’s very uncomfortable. This clothing is quite water resistant, but it can sometimes leak water. Wax cotton is also highly wind resistant. This clothing works best in cold, wet and windy conditions. Wax cotton clothing is often much less expensive than high tech outdoor clothing. Wax cotton is also quite tough and it works well even when muddy; it just slips through the brush. It gives someone with limited finances another option.
The clothing is also quite inexpensive to make, and doesn’t take very much time to manufacture compared to some other wax cotton techniques. Many candles are made of paraffin wax, and they’re cheap and easily available. I just melt down the candles, and then paint the wax onto the cotton clothing. Second hand shops are often a good source of inexpensive cotton clothing.
Formula
It’s possible to use a variety of different waxes to make wax cotton. I often prefer the pure paraffin wax. Sometimes I even use scented paraffin candles. At times, I add a little bit of medical grade mineral oil or liquid paraffin to soften the paraffin a little bit and make it less prone to cracking. It’s also possible to use bees wax, which gives the clothing a really good smell. Bees wax tends to crumble while paraffin tends to crack. Some people combine paraffin wax, bees wax and mineral oil to get a different result. I don’t use more than 20% mineral oil. The mineral oil makes the wax mixture softer and oilier. Flexible microcrystalline wax might be another option. You’ve got to experiment and find out what works best for you.
History
Wax cotton and oilskin clothing has been used for hundreds of years. Tall ship sailors treated their sails with fish oil to stop the wind from blowing through the cotton sail. This made the sail more efficient. Eventually, the sailors made clothing out of the oiled sails, and the clothing was effective in cold, wet and windy conditions typically encountered by sailors. Cowboys also used wax cotton clothing to stay comfortable during bad weather.
Stay safe and have a Great Day!

Some people just rub some wax on top of the cloth and then iron cloth. That is the fjallraven greenland wax technique. It's quite popular. My technique is a little different. I saturate the cloth with wax. Over time, the excess wax on top of the cloth wears away. The wax sort of lubricates the cloth allows the jacket or pants to sort of slip through the forest branches. My technique allows very little wind to penetrate the clothing. The cloth is water resistant, but not waterproof. It's a cool technique because you can take regular consumer cotton clothing, treat it with wax, and get a result which works great in the cold weather, about like outdoor survival clothing. The clothing should be really loose, to create a warm air bubble beside the body. Just layer clothes underneath the wax cotton shell. This technique doesn't look perfect but it seems to work well... and it's quite inexpensive. Paraffin wax is cheap, many candles are made of parrafin, and second hand clothing is also inexpensive. In some situations, it's an interesting option, especially if finances are an issue and spending hundreds of dollars on high tech winter survival clothing is not possible. If you are going for fashionably looking wax cotton (looks matter more than function), try another technique. This technique is probably simply too messy.

I sometimes add mineral oil to the paraffin wax. That also seems to work well. Both the pure pariffin and the paraffin/mineral oil mixture work well in cold temperatures. They also slip through brush and repel mud. The clothing is so soaked with wax that the mud can't penetrate the cotton fibers. Just hang up the pants and let them dry, then brush off the dried mud. The pants are also resistant to wetness in the freezing cold; the ice forms on top of the wax.

@digitalfriend7114
@digitalfriend7114 4 года назад
The solar wax melter was an experiment, and it seems to work really well. It is so much less work than using the heat gun. With a solar wax melter, you've got to wait a long time, but the actual work time is quite short. I just paint the wax onto the article of clothing, put it into the solar wax melter and turn the clothing a couple of times to makes sure all the wax patches melt. That's about it. The problem is, you can only use the solar wax melter in the summer on a sunny day when the temperature is 25 C or hotter. You've got to experiment with the ingredients. My favourite is pure paraffin wax or a mixture of paraffin wax (4 parts) and mineral oil (1 part). You've got to experiment with the ratio, and find out what you like the best. The wax is harder and cracks more while the mineral oil softens up the wax and makes it more flexible, but is a little bit oily. In the sub zero Celcius weather, say about -20 Celcius, the mineral oil/paraffin mixture starts to get harder and less oily. The pure paraffin is really stiff, and does a good job of creating a warm air bubble around you in the cold. It's almost like wearing a tent. I hope your project turns out great!

@@digitalfriend7114 I live in the desert while its hot most of the year where it reaches above 40 Celsius easily so it will melt good. But I might experience over melting, I will have to experiment and see. It reaches to only below 5 Celsius and rarly 0 or -1 Celsius so it's not as cold as where you live.The thing that bothers me the most in winter is the wind, it gets really fast out here. Besides that, the process seems fun too, so I will give it a shot !
@digitalfriend7114
@digitalfriend7114 4 года назад
@@xivix6710 It might also be worth trying the Greenland wax technique. There's a company called fjallraven which makes these wax bars which are rubbed on clothing to produce a light wax coating. I think the cloth is then ironed. Look it up, it's another option. See which technique you prefer. The fjallraven technique probably looks neater and less messy than my technique. All the best.

Does the color of the pants matter for the design at the end for example i take green wax and it cracks white and the cotton fabric is black or white is there a diffrence
@digitalfriend7114
@digitalfriend7114 4 года назад
In my oppinion, the colour of the wax doesn't matter much. The wax layer is so thin that you can barely see the colour of the wax. I prefer clear or white wax. However, the wax type and mix ratio matters a lot. Using pure parrifin wax is different than a mixture of 4 parts parrafin wax mixed with 1 part mineral oil. The pure paraffin produces a stiffer finish than the mineral oil mixture, which produces a more and oily texture and flexible finish. At about -20 Celcius the mineral oil mixture gets solid and is not oily any more. I like the pure paraffin when it's really windy, because it creates a warm air bubble around you. The wax cotton works even better when you wear a nylon windbreaker layer and wool underneath. I will try and do another wax cotton video this winter, it's a very effective and low cost way to get survival clothing which works great in freezing subzero wind. High end cold weather survival clothing can be expensive. The wax cotton just cuts the cold wind. 1 part bees wax and 2 parts parrafin and 1/2 part mineral oil also produces a different result, it smells really good. You've got to experiment with the wax type and the ratio of ingredients to find your custom formula (recipie) which works for you. Remember not to wear wax cotton anywhere where clothing can burn or catch fire because wax is highly flammable. Use common sense. All the best.

I'm not bashing on your technique of doing this, I just think you're doing A LOT more work than you need to. I thought you did the bake in the sun method because you didn't have a heat gun. But you do! All you need to do is: Melt oil and wax mixture together, apply on garment with brush, and heat gun to help the garment absorb, then let sit for a week or two. That's all.

can you wash items that have been waxed?
@digitalfriend7114
@digitalfriend7114 4 года назад
Items which have been waxed cannot be washed in a washing machine and should never be put into a dryer. Wax is flammable. I would suggest wiping the clothing off with a wet rag. I have hosed down wax clothing before, and this worked well. You could experiment and try hand washing and hand rinsing. I haven't tried hand washing yet. If you used mineral oil in the wax cotton, the soap might remove some mineral oil. I let muddy clothing dry out and then I just use a stiff brush to brush away the mud which just becomes dust. Wax cotton clothing is sometimes called a "duster".

WAY TOO MUCH WAX your garment shouldn’t be so saturated that’s it’s wet. You shouldn’t have to wring the wax out. Also don’t use pure paraffin for clothes especially not a melted candle. Paraffin doesn’t bend with the fabric it cracks. That’s why your clothes have so many marks. Beeswax is what you need because it’s flexible. Good idea using a solar heater to melt the wax though.

have you ever tried a melted plastic/rubber mixture onto your jackets? Its a great alternative for vegans who don't want to support the whaling industry or the bee industry. I've been doing it for a while now and it works great. You just need a double boiler and melt your plastic/rubber mixture ( I use 40 percent rubber balls, the kind you can buy in a quarter machine, 40% parachute men, but don't forget to snip there parachute off! I use a sterilized pair of hobby scissors, but you can use anything really, from garden sheers, to hair scissors, check my videos to learn the easiest ways to sterilize scissors!, and 20% acrylic paint made of whatever color you like.) If you don't want to use acrylic paint, and a lot of people don't and I understand why so each their own, some people simply melt down their plastic dining wear, or silicone lunar cups, etc. You don't have to buy a special brush for this method, all you need is a simple sponge which to dip into the melted plastic/rubber until its fully saturated and push It onto the cotton clothing so that it soaks in, paying special attention to the seams. Once the jacket is totally covered, but not hardened (do not let it harden or you'll have to throw the whole thing away and start over!) you quickly thrust the entire jacket into the dutch oven covered in water until the entire thing is submerged, and put it on simmer. Let the whole thing simmer for about 24 hours. DO NOT open the top of the dutch oven until you are finished. Even if you're curious. If you open the oven the heat will escape. anyway, this is the method I use and I like it the best. As a person who has tried all the different methods for waxing and hated them all because the smell of wax gives me an allergic reaction and there has been no way to cover it up that's worked well enough to not send me to the ER. Now im 100% a plastic/silicon guy, woof woof!

Okay this is five years old, just found your video. Two things you did well with the video, 1. the camera was horizontal, 2. you did not play music over your voice. Sadly, about the four minute mark I had to stopped watching. Your bouncy camera quickly became overly annoying almost nauseating. Creating a demonstration video always mount the camera. While your camera is bouncing, as a viewer where am I supposed to focus on the video screen? Also, with the camera mounted you can use both hands. Hope this helps you.

I'd rather wear wool and get wet than wear greasy cotton. Yuck.

This is low cost cold weather survival wax cotton. It is probably not there for fashion purposes. If you want a stylish look, the expensive brand name wax cotton might be a better option.

You have to break in the cloth by bending it many times. Then the cloth gets flexible. I made a video about how to layer using wax cotton. The wax cotton works well in really cold weather.

I'LL SAY IT, LESS IS MORE. YOUNG BLOOD PLEASE DELETE THIS VIDEO IT IS WRONG IN SO MANY WAYS. YOU DO NOT KNOW WHAT YOU DOING. IT IS OK TO LOSE A BATTLE. Suggestion: Wash these garments in hot water to desolve extra wax and stay away from recording bad instructions.

Yes. But they will sweat for a while so you need to leave them hanging for a while.
