There are so many ways to wear a sword and this covers some of the more common styles and systems. Showing how they are are worn and explaining why they were set up as they were.
If you are interested in scabbards todsworkshop.c...
This does not cover every type of hanging system, but it does show 8 different ways and Hobb with his magnificent hat (worn in the Tudor style of 'pill garlic' and it also shows me in a pourpoint far too small! No back scabbards though - sorry
Filmed on location at the fabulous Kentwell Hall where you can find me (and Hobb plus hat) every summer. www.kentwell.c...
If you are interested in budget historical daggers and knives have a look at todcutler.com

It would be interesting to figure out what wearing methods (if any) were considered fashionable (or outdated/out-of-style) during certain times...
@kungfuasgaeilge
@kungfuasgaeilge 4 года назад
I imagine fashions in general would wax and wane at a slower rate, but they would be much more regionalised, and thus I guess more diverse at any given time. Interesting topic, I'm sure there's the makings of someone's (not mine!) PhD in there!
@Misericorde9
@Misericorde9 4 года назад
kungfuasgaeilge : I would expect the “regions” fashions rose and fell in could have quite different borders at different social strata as well. The wealthier and more powerful nobles from widely different geographic areas might have more in common with each other than with their own lower nobility and commoner countrymen, being part of a distinct, and more traveled, social group.
@shockwave6213
@shockwave6213 4 года назад
It would not only be regionalized, but also rather dependant on your place in society. Something the nobles found fashionable might be in fashion for a lower class 5 or more years later.

This should help, I've always had trouble when carrying my machete in the woods (I'm a Land Surveyor). The commercial scabbards have a simple belt loop which makes the blade dangle strait down. This makes it waggle around getting caught on the back of your knee when you step over an obstacle and sometimes tripping you. These are nice and mostly simple solutions. Thanks!

This is perfect timing, I'm actually doing artwork of a knight right now and this is perfect for figuring out his sword scabbard, I was actually going through some of the older videos with Matt Easton to see if I could find a good shot, but this video has all the kinds of closeups I might need. Seeing as how the sword belt is so often integral to the scabbard itself, would one wear two belts? One for pouches, your dagger, and any other stuff you might wanna carry, and one for the sword? It might be a good followup to see how daggers are worn, and any other pouches and whatnot were worn historically, and how they were worn in relation to a sword.
@nevisysbryd7450
@nevisysbryd7450 4 года назад
I have seen it both ways for wearing multiple belts. Double-wrap belts were also an occasional thing and as he mentioned, some of the suspension types can have the sword removed without the belt. www.lutel.eu/files/products/sword_belts%5B40%5D.jpg
@nevisysbryd7450
@nevisysbryd7450 4 года назад
As for pouches, they usually were either slung over the shoulder with a baldric or were tied to the belt or had loops that the belt went through. Most of what I have seen has included on the other other side of the torso from the sword. Daggers were frequently similarly looped or tied, although their placement on the belt is more variable (it was popular to set parrying daggers at an angle on the back) .
@Danthar
@Danthar 4 года назад
I positively love the early style tied belt. I know it is partially because of my love of the early/high medieval period, but there is something elegant about not having to rely on a metal buckle in order to secure your sword to yourself. Keep up the good work!

Beautiful work and sound historical information, as always. I like your point about the "gunslinger" look lol. Many Modern holsters (like my Galco Kingtuk) now come with a 5-15 degree forward cant of the pistol. It's basically bringing the barrel and slide into a similar angle as the blade and grip of swords (not straight up and down, but leaning toward the front of the body), because it's more comfortable and accessible. Back in the Wild West, people who wore cross draw (more of a gunfighter set up, but less convenient for labor than the stereotypical strong side draw) were almost exactly mimicking the old sword on the support hand side hip carry method. It's a similar geometry Example of someone carrying a revolver cross draw (and strong side at the same time): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-eOfr6hU5fic.html The similarity to a sword is obvious Learning all the ways to wear and draw a pistol was awesome, how to wear a daisho (katana and wakizashi) blew my mind with it's brilliant yet elegant simplicity; I'm always impressed by how well a katana can just go through any belt and hang out there and still be drawn easily. The carry methods from Europe seem to be much more gear-based with all these crazy belt methods and evolved over time, instead of putting all that stuff into the clothing from the get go like the Japanese did (just with katana for everyday life, I know larger nihonto more for a battlefield had fastenings etc.) Today, many very professional gunmen (including almost every firearms instructor I've ever personally learned from) use apendix carry, which very much reminds me of crossdraw. The most badass person I've ever seen come out of a screen to teach me to fight demonstrating apendix carry and a draw from concealment using it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-aJiYv5XmbaU.html Interesting historical fact, the term gunslinger is a later invention, probably of dime novels etc. The term used back in the day would have been "shootist" which is so much SteamPunk 19th century yes Example of 19th century holsters available to civilians in the old Wild West. Much of the time, a sword will only do as well as the scabbard lets it. The same is true with pistols and holsters: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Oh7jimmLPxk.html I think if Tod made this kinda stuff, it would be awesome beyond anything else I've personally seen

Great video. There's also a few other ways for earlier period swords, such as the crossed method through a scabbard slider on Migration Era Spathae (which can be done with either a sword belt or a baldric), and of course the Roman system for the earlier Gladius. Also worth noting the Romans tended to wear their swords up with the pommel at the armpit on short baldrics so they didn't dangle, which works with later period swords depending on the length of course. There's also the two point suspension system used on many early medieval swords including Viking, Rus, Carolingian, Byzantine, and pretty much any Central Asian, Chinese, or Persian sword from that time. Those were typically worn low at the hip or behind the back in some examples of Byzantine.

As I fancy swords, knives and daggers I only have the cross the chest swashbuckling scabbard holder. Doesn't seem to bother me much. Especially when there is layers on.

I find it interesting that many Asian arrow quivers have three point suspension systems to stop them from swinging/flopping around, but their swords do not (many are simply hanging off the belt). OTOH, western arrow quivers flop around, and the swords are secured more often.

Tod, thanks for showing the closeups at the end of the video. I was hoping for shots like that with each example and was slightly disappointed when you seemed to quickly move on to the next sword, but your work is so good I kept on watching. Glad I did.

The protagonists from a game I'm designing (and a book I'm writing; they're unrelated) wear their swords at navel height through a baldric. Given that one of each pair carries a large cavalry-length broadsword/side sword, would this be very comfortable?

Do you have any suggestion whether or not these types of scabbards lend themselves to be used in a defensive way when ambushed, such as shown by Fiore dei Liberi or Filipo Vadi? You'd think that carrying your sword on a baldric would make these types of techniques much easier, because the scabbards are shown to be quite mobile and not fixed to the hip. However most (late) medieval artwork I've seen so far seems to portray the swordbelt carried at the hip (this may just be due to insuffcient research on my part). Any opinions on that?

I use a custom made Baldric to carry swords. with a wide strap. Very comfortable, and if I have to sit down, easy to take off.

Question. How common were pure leather scabbards without the wooden core? Have there been any finds from the later middle ages (like the 13th-15th century?

The German word "Messer" usualy just mean "knife",but in earlier times it could mean also longer weapons if their blade is shaped like a knife and just one side is sharpened. Some kind of a "long knife". These are weapons of common soldiers or mercenaries like the Falchion (German: "Malchus")

What would you recommend for a 2ft x 4" wide x 1" plastic blade. Minecraft style. You know you want to.

Wrong. You're meant to impractically strap it across your back. Brooding is optional, but recommended.

Good video as always. One point about a comment you made about the low slung holster of the Old West: that is actually an invention of Hollywood; in fact an entire industry popped up making those holsters and other pseudo Western wears because of the popularity of tv and film westerns. If you look at real photos and painting from the American Old West, no one is wearing a low slung gun holster and for very good reasons - drawing the revolver if you were for example sitting on a horse is very difficult if not impossible. And those who bother to use a holster (and not everyone did) have the gun holster at slightly above waist level.

good timing, i'm looking to make a wearable scabbard or two atm. funny thing is the more online money/banking related stuff you have to do the more it feels like medieval times. you wouldn't put up with peole constantly pulling at your pockets as you walk down a high street looking to get thier hands on your money yet thats what you get with spam emails and f'kwit phone hacks every other day.

I have a sword but I’m not at all fond of the scabbard that came with it. I can’t imagine its scabbard has any purpose other than to kill the wearer. The blade is 60cm. The scabbard is a simple leather sheath with one strap attached to the top and another strap attached to the bottom. Both straps attach with a buckle. It’s worn on the back, but inevitably, the scabbard slides down and forward, allowing the sword to slip out behind me.
