I've got 20yrs painting.. I'm not gonna crack on you, I hope you are stilling trying. If not, keep trying! Nobody was great at anything at first! I've also seen far worse! Sand in a more uniform direction, we call it the X pattern.. 2x2 section til the whole surface is as you want.. next use that 3000 like your life depends on it.. cause if you short this step.. those scratches are gonna be hell on older paints. Oh and wrap the sandpaper around the block.. it wont come lose so much and skip the soap.. Just water! Soap leaves a residue! Use a wool pad to remove the scratches from sanding and a heavy to medium cut compound. Put 5-6 dime size drops on an 8" pad and work it into the area, before you pull the trigger.. it wont sling as much.. Work a 2x2ft section til you don't see any scratches, but not one area for too long. Especially hoods, you'll warp them! Buff at a 1-3 setting.. not dragging ass slow, but not too fast either, let the compound and friction and uniformity in your strokes do the work. Take your time, or you'll burn through the clear or single stage. Then use a green foam or orange pad and med/fine polishing compound and buff every section 2ftx2ft start slow and build up speed, end at a high speed (4-5 setting) per section. Once done it should look like a mirror! With no halos or sheen..just gloss and a pretty shine.. now go wax it! You're done! Much respect for your effort and sharing.. Never give up, refining your work! The proof will be in your results!
@Tokushu101

Ps. Shit can that 3m compound, take it from a professional.. That shit is garbage! Use Presta, it breaks down in water and makes for easy cleaning and doesn't use fillers like 3m does.. How do you know if a compound uses filler? Buff an area and poor rubbing alcohol on it.. if it turns white.. it's got filler! Filler doesn't remove scratches, it hides them! Was the car, bam you got scratches again.. btw be careful.. you can really f up a paint job if you aren't skilled at this.. I recommend trying on a old hood or fender from the junkyard.. practice makes perfect!

You should sand it with p3000 to, after p2000 to get a fine surface without holograms after you polish.

When your first learning , find a friend who really could care less how there car looks, probably already funky looking, get it over to your house buy a case of beer and go at it, It takes alot of practice and alot of old beaters to practice on, but if you finally learn to kinda do it correct, then your on your way to buff out heaven. It really is a art, but like anything the more you practice the better you get, and another craft that you know. And hey you burn 1,000s of calories per panel, you can lose 20 Lbs per car, Don't be afraid to try !. And if you screw it up to bad, then you can learn how to sand and shoot color, alot more fun then buffing. You don't have to go for the Gold, hey if you end up with the copper your a winner, you will get the gold,just keep on spinning that buffer. Watch every video you can find, and there is alot of them, then go do it. Don't just go buying different pads you need 1 Aggressive wool pad 6 inch / 1 Aggressive wool pad 3 inch 1 Foam polisher pad 6 inch / 1 foam polisher pad 3 inch 1 Foam wax pad 6 inch / 1 foam wax pad 3 inch A dewalt Buffer the large one (comes with 6 inch hook and loop pad) Buy the 3 inch adapter pad from Eastwood (cheap) that is the adapter pad, the buffer is not cheap approx 265.00 , I have used mine on 100s of cars, countless hours and its still like new, but I do take care of it, along with all of my tools, I don't mine putting out the money once, but that's it. Clean you pads and put them into plastic bags. Get used to a set of compounds, what ever you choose, stick with them, I use 3m, but there are alot of good sets out there, they are all about the same really. You could be trained to do this decently in 2 days . 12 hours each day. Will you be able to do show cars, Not at all, but with alot of practice under your belt, Yes you could. Its just seeing, feeling ,and memory. But you cant get there just by watching videos, you gotta get that buffer spinning.

I find people are so Skiddish of both Buffing and Painting, they will try to rebuild a engine, but paint a car or buff it out.no way. You can throw welding into that same box, You Tube is a fantastic place to learn different things that a normal person (whatever that is) would never get to see in person. I'm 63 and had to learn with almost no help, now young people can see almost everything, performed by many different people in many ways, Forgot to mention....Nice Video Paul. I wish there was a channel on You Tube that reflected a actual working shop, Show everyone how to evaluate a cars paint, explains what needs to be done, and show everyone the work step by step, now that would be nice, all jobs are different and special attention needs to be taken. I'm retired now, I was lucky enough to have owned a Large Communications Co, so Money isn't a big problem, But for someone retired and needing extra money, there is alot of money to be made just buffing out peoples cars, yes it takes me some time 2 or 3 days to finish it, but they just about fall down when they see it finished, and that's the best part of doing this kind of work.
@PaulFosterrebuilds

you made a really good point, until a few months ago I didn't know what a single stage paint job was. I'm sure i'm not alone in that. I'm learning and sharing as I go. sometimes i've done the job more than once, in other cases its my first time. once again thanks for the comments they go a long way in helping those that watch these videos.

First off. Never hold a buffer on its edge, always keep it flat and that's not an orbital it's a high speed polisher. Holy hologram stripes batman. I wouldn't follow these instructions unless you want to ruin your paint.

The nose of my hood looks like the clear coat came off due to frequent car washes. I have tried to compound it and re-wax it but nothing works. Is there a procedure for fixing it so the shine comes back?
@dukeman7595
@dukeman7595 8 лет назад
Unfortunately the clearcoat has been compromised. The only fix is to "wet sand" the entire panel lightly with 400 grit sand paper (wet sand paper only) and then spray a couple coats of clearcoat . If you don't feel comfortable doing it yourself you will have to take it to a body shop.

My wife had a boo boo with the new matilic blue, on the left qt. panel. saving that for last after I complete the black. thanks so much for your time and teaching.

anyone know if wetsanding a 2002 chevy express van will remove paint from it's surface? (not just road paint or over spray paint but looks like model paint or the kind on 18 wheelers with actual brush strokes) I have tried denatured alcohol, goof off and paint thinner with no results. I then tried a gel that melted my actual paint off down to bare metal. you know these bands the paint chips on them so I'm not looking for a perfect finish however, the only thing I could see left to do is to wet sand it then polish it back out with the least amount of damage to the paint job any information would help thanks guys.

@PaulFosterrebuilds
@PaulFosterrebuilds 9 лет назад
William Loredo you can wet sand with 2000 or greater in a small area it will remove the overspray but then you would have to buff out the spot. Other people have tried alcohol and degreaser. whatever approach you take I would do it in a shaded area and test a small area before moving on to make sure your going to get the desired result. I would be pissed off at the landlord.

Hey man, for a beginner, not a bad job at all! Had you invested in a wool pad and a nicer finishing pad, I'm sure you'd have got the finish even better. Even still, you did everything more or less correct. Didn't watch the video completely through, but if you used that 600 grit be very careful, its quite easy to burn through with that low of a grit. That's a lower grit than some bodyshops use to paint the car! Personally I'd never drop below 1500 and finish with 3000. Any scratches requiring more than that are probably too far gone to be saved. Keep it up!

+James Weissbach honestly I wet sand with 2000 on 2 stage paint (base+clear) but i'm sure there are people with more experience than me that would offer a different opinion. here is another project i did for 3M Autobody where i tore down and repainted the front left Qpanel, I went through how i sand the fender down and then wet sand and polish the paint. If anyone else reads this and are a body specialist they are welcome to offer their take on this question here is the video hope it helps. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-asmtVF0CIOw.html

Nice video. How long should I wait before I can begin to wet sand and polish a fresh paint job?
@PaulFosterrebuilds

anthony carraturo depends on the paint that you use. generally the manufacturer will provide cure times for their products. I suggest checking there first.

Some auto body shops will give you old car panels that they are throwing away. Call and ask. Then pick one up and practice on that

you need to go with 5000 I believe, tried a small area rubbed lightly with 2000 and my black car now has a huge gray spot, totally removed the paint

+george slupski you wet sanded a spot and went completely through the paint? The hood i did this on barely had 1 coat of paint on it. the key is to not push down lightly wet sand with the soapy water. without the soapy water you will dig in and it will remove paint.

@PaulFosterrebuilds
@PaulFosterrebuilds 8 лет назад
this was earlier work and when I painted the hood it was not a consistent even coat. (First paint attempt) I didn't want to push the pad to much or to long as not to remove to much paint. I'm going to end up repainting the hood in the near future to correct my mistake when I did this hood a couple years ago. thanks for the feedback.

PLEASE REPLY. What do I do if I don't have the orbital polisher? Any alternatives?

@f1akman

It works, but it IS work, and a lot of it. Especially if you're trying to compound wet sanding. I'd recommend spending the money on the orbital and pads.

Hello paul 1999 Van I bought the other day and it was a business vehicle with the original paint . And it had some labeling on it. I stated with cutting compound in some of the area witch pretty good but is still visible, the labeling has harden quite a bit, Should i just wet sand the areas until the label is sanded all down then polish ? thank you in advanced

+James McClelland Not sure what the best approach is here to be honest, I had my vette in a rally and there were decals I had to place on it. I'm still trying to get everything off of it. I was about to use a heat gun to warm them up. Not sure if that would work for you because the label has hardened but you may give it a try in a small area. I will do a little research for you on this but maybe some of the other subscribers on the channel have a suggestion on how to remove it.

Like you i'm not a professional, the key is practice my friend. I've done this multiple times now and have picked up additional tricks from others with more experience. There are those here that rip what i've done but they are missing the point. My channel is to take what most think they cannot do and show they can. Good luck with your project.

Which is better.. Wet sand or clay bar before adding compound
@Thealchemistbmb
@Thealchemistbmb 8 лет назад
+Earl Flynn Step 1 Always clay before any kind of paint correction. You dont want to grind any contaminents into the paint. Step 2 Use a cutting pad with s cutting compound to restore the finish after wet sanding Steo 3 use a finishing compound with a finishing pad to restore lustre. Wax/paint seeal and admire....
@f1akman
@f1akman 8 лет назад
That depends on what you're trying to do. Typically for maintenance, you clay bar every 6 months or so then light cutting pad with compound (unless you have other correction to do), polish, seal, and wax. Typically you don't wet sand unless you have to. Everything you do, from compound to wet sanding takes off clear coat. The more aggressive, the more you take off. You should do the minimum needed for the what you're trying to accomplish.

Hi, Very informative video! When do you use the rubbing compound? Thanks!
@PaulFosterrebuilds
@PaulFosterrebuilds 9 лет назад
+ptrmzr hey thanks for the feedback, I found that after I clean the surface after wet sanding with 2000 and then 3000 3M papers. I use the polishing compound. the heavy rubbing compound is really for 1500 or higher buffing. an example of that is the Toyota Tacoma I restored the paint on. I used the Finnesit 2000 or higher for 90% of the truck but that last 10% required I use the heavy rubbing compound to really get some of the heavier spots down and get them shining.
