This is how to carve, make a whistle in willow or any other wood in less than a minute! Takes a bit of practice but the making time is very quick indeed. Most importantly you need a really sharp knife. For any whittling of a whistle or for that matter any carving making sure your knife is quite literally 'razor sharp' is a must. It doesn't have to be willow, you can use oak, ash, maple and even sycamore.
I find its easiest to find suitable material, in the Spring and early Summer when the new layer of bark easily twists off the branch after scoring.
Whittling is a great skill to develop and leads on to making spoons and many other useful camping implements. Enjoy your camping and campfires and please visit us sometime at Trellyn Woodland Camping.
