HOW TO WIN THE RAT RACE! dirt bike philosophy

Another gumby vlog from www.crosstraini... As I rode around Canada, a lot of guys were saying 'Man you are living the life'. And a few said they really felt it was time for a change and escape the rat race. They were in high pressure jobs, earning as much as possible to pay off big mortgages and credit card debts. Hanging out with the Traction eRag crew in Canada was great, as I got to meet like minded people who also made a conscious decision to opt out of the rat race and the work buy consume die system, and focus more on what they loved doing. This led to some interesting conversations...

Because buying stuff is the key to happiness, we take a short cut and buy it all on credit, and when we aren't happier we think it's because we didn't buy enough shit. And of course guess who is making loads of money from the average joe with all his credit cards maxxed out to the limit trying to win the rat race?
Wouldn't it be cool if we could get out of this vicious circle? If we could give a big finger to the rat race and actually choose how much we get involved with it, instead of letting it control us? And discover will an anodized billet fuel cap make my penis larger?
One of the Traction eRag guys is called Hobo Bill. He recently chose to opt out of the rat race and choose a simpler lifestyle. He downsized and walked away from his 20 year career. He bought this derelict 1965 van and took months restoring it to its former glory so it could carry him and his Italian princess wherever the path takes him. He picks up odd jobs here and there, and wheels out the RR350 for a ride at every new place.
Now we can't all do that of course, and may not want to either. But there are plenty of things we can do to enjoy life and free up more time for the things that matter like family, friends, beer, and of course dirt riding.
Do I need stuff? Question all your purchases. A new car every year? Expensive restaurants? Trendy fashion labels? Most of the stuff we buy increases our temporary happiness but then rapidly just becomes clutter in our lives.
Avoid debt. Avoid debt and credit cards like the plague. Can't afford it? Don't buy it until you've saved the money for it, except for buying a place to live.
Hate ads. Become very sceptical of all ads. Most of the time they are just trying to convince you to buy shit you don't need. We are surrounded by them, and they are made by professionals you know how to subsconsiously manipulate you.
Downsize. Sell it all off and aim not to replace it with new clutter (unless it's dirt bike related of course).
Be content. Ads try to convince us that anyone richer than us is happier than us, despite all the evidence against this. Choose not to be proud of your old car. Your small house. Your 1980s model dirt bike.
Work hard then chill. Work the system to your benefit. If you are young, work hard and save hard in your 20s when you are full of energy.
The important stuff. Focus on the things that matter, like an anodized billet fuel cap. Research shows that true happiness is not built on money or our possessions - it is built on our life experiences and relationships with others - family, partners and friends.
How of course you could choose to do all of this then lash out on a stable full of brand new dirt bikes and bling. But naturally most of us have a limited budget, so remember a brand new dirt bike won't make you a better rider, just work on your skills. The latest riding gear with cool graphics won't make you faster, just stitch up your old gear. The only bling that will make you a better rider is an anodized billet fuel cap. And the big question of course - will an anodized billet fuel cap make my penis larger? Yes it will. Here endeth the sermon.

Honestly both you and Bill inspire me to live differently, I hope by the time I'm 30 to have enough money to travel for a few years, I don't believe in paying $30-50 for a t-shirt with some a company's name on it. I do not want to be a walking ad for a stupid company, besides companies and I support.
@crosstrainingenduro
@crosstrainingenduro 8 лет назад
amen to that. when melissa went to romaniacs she actually blacked out the name on her riding gear, she's getting sick of being a walking billboard for international companies even if they are making good quality dirt bike gear.

Great vid! I'm currently riding a 1999 KTM 200 MXC and for a while I really had myself convinced that I needed a newer bike ( nothing wrong with the 99) . I've gotten over the new bike "wants" and am having a blast just riding for the pure enjoyment of riding.
@crosstrainingenduro

they are actually very sought after bikes here, the early 200s had the smaller and lighter frame! lots of guys ask for reviews on new bike models and a lot of the bling and accessories you can buy... always feel a bit uncomfortable when i post those vids and deep down i'm not really keen on bling or having to have the latest model bike. mind you i'm dead keen on steg pegz and any stuff that helps me squeeze my freakishly tall body on to a bike and makes it easier for these old bones lol.

I like it...A lot. I'm 41 and back to scratch so a simple place to live is my dream at the moment. I have two young boys and want to spend as much time showing them how to live as I can. Hopefully I can buy a simple place again one day but in the mean time I am getting an old 4wd and an old DR650 and fixing them up on my days off. I am shithouse on a dirtbike but I suppose falling off enough times will teach me how to not fall off quite as often??? Probably not.... But anyway. Your videos are inspiring and I thank you for it. Keep up the good work and maybe I'll se you on a trail one day. I'll be the one face down in the mud.. Crying about scratching the shiny red anodising off my fuel cap. "What doesn't kill us"...and all that jazz.

I kind of enjoy the "fixing it up and making it work better" part of dirt biking (applies to anything machine related really) as much as riding. My favorite ride right now is a 77' PE250 ($400 plus some money on new tires). Great motor. Pulls like a tractor which allows me to go a bit slower and enjoy myself. With the tips Barry gives on his videos I feel I'm getting less awful at riding. The PE is light and low as well. Not really any suspension to speak of. I also have an 81 RM125x (cost me a 24 pack and some bits n pieces. Tires, piston, gaskets etc). Great suspension. But a very peaky motor. Things can get out of hand quickly. Frankly it scares the dudu out of me. So I have been looking for an early 80's PE which looks to be a combo of the air cooled enduro motor and the "Full Floater" suspension. I have a bunch of other old dirt bikes from the 70s as well. I occasionally toy with buying a new bike but..... there are so many older cool bikes that can be had for cheap and some TLC. And I really like air cooled two strokes. As for debt. I fully agree with "Berry". The wife and I bought a home, a modest fixer upper and another property with a business. With the exception of an entry level new car, the wife insisted after needing to hitchhike to work once or twice. We went without most of the things people take for granted for years. We payed off the properties. And now coming up on 50 we have the option of cutting back on the work some if and when "we" want to. It feels very nice to be debt free. No Mortgage, no car loan and no CC's. It feels great to leave that sign in the window that says "gone fishing, right after we get back from hunting!"
@crosstrainingenduro
@crosstrainingenduro 8 лет назад
nice one with the PE250, nothing wrong with old bikes... in that recent vid i was on the old XR200 in that tight single track and still managed to pull away from the guys on an FE450 and RR350. :) and great to hear you own a plac to live AND are debt free, it is an incredible feeling to know you suddenly have so many more options for how you want to live!

Another fantastic video Barry. I agree with you 100%. I think that it's incredibly important to invest your abilities rather than things, as that is what truly lasts, and gives you the freedom to have awesome experiences. This is what your video really is about - FREEDOM. As a relatively young person (in my early 30s), I have been fortunate to be able to afford to do have quite a few auto/moto/outdoor adventures. When I run stage rallies (car stuff), younger kids always ask me how can get into this (relatively expensive) sport. Every single time I tell them - get a good education in something you like doing and become very good at it. You might not get rich doing engineering or IT (I'm definitely not), but it will give you the freedom of having a job anywhere and anytime you need it. There is that freedom word again...
@crosstrainingenduro
@crosstrainingenduro 8 лет назад
can't agree with you more dimitriy. i know it doesn't suit everyone but working hard to build your foundations in your 20s can give you so much freedom for the rest of your life. sadly i have friends who would love to do this but are just too impulsive... they are on good incomes and start saving for home loan deposit but blow it all on an overseas trip before they are even halfway there. :( and of course their credit cards are maxxed out too.

Ha! I really wanted a 4 stroke trial bike, because they are become rarer, the nicer sound, and the way they pull from bottom. I found a guy who had recently broken his hip, and had a hard time starting his 4 stroke bike, wanting a 2 stroke badly. We rode each other bikes today, and just swapped them! His bike was younger, but needs to be stripped and rebuilt. Mine was older, but already rebuilt and in a mint condition. Best thing, being a Beta Rev3, the kickstarter was on the other side, meaning he can start it with his good leg. It's classic really. Two happy blokes today.

The really hard part is reconciling a career you really enjoy with time for hobbies. I work full time as a software engineer (40 hours a week here in the states), and do about another 20 hours a week on my small software business, which doesn't leave nearly enough time for dirt bikes. I try to do an hour here and an hour there, and every couple of weeks we go on full days dirt bike day, and usually twice a year we manage to get away for longer trip (3-4 days). Hopefully soon that business will take off and maybe I'll be able to take more time off myself. Id love to one day do that 6 month trip to argentina! I've always wanted to see new zealand too! And who knows, maybe B.C. Canada :P
@crosstrainingenduro

yep it can be hard to strike that work/recreation balance. and of course one thing i barely touched on is the fact that many guys love their work and enjoy throwing themselves into it... it's a great thing to love the work you do. but of course so many hate their jobs, but feel trapped because they need to fund a lifestyle beyond their means. that's where i hope this vid might suggest some alternative options. :)

I agree with this 200% I live in Bali, Indonesia where more than 55% of the population live on $2 a day. The cost of land (without house) is ridiculous (e.g. USD35,000 for 10mx10m -- that's average, can be much, much more). Do the math... How many lifetimes to pay that off. Oh, but wait. .... we usually have to pay something like 17% on a mortgage. Yes! 17% !!!!!! But WORST of all.... there's 135% TAX and IMPORT DUTIES on motorcycles!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So, even a simple 250cc KTM, Husky or whatever will cost more than DOUBLE. I agree with the sentiments of this video, and I LOVE this channel, but my cheap, Asian-built, 150cc "motor-shite-cle" is probably the best bike I will ever have.... or be able to afford. I'm STILL smiling... Bikes make you smile. Fellow bikers make me smile. but a bit green with envy of anyone on a decent bike, too, of course :P

Only problem is how infalted houses have become, the income to value gap has widend faster than i can save. That okay though, i plan on travelling australia working on farms where i can, and when house prices correct i will jump into the market.
@crosstrainingenduro
@crosstrainingenduro Год назад
Definitely a lot tougher now. I know a lot of people are saying it's impossible to get into the market now but I suspect it might just be aiming lower. E.g. I started with a crappy house in the cheapest flood-prone suburb due to a low income and worked up from there. But nowadays it would probably mean starting with an apartment... or the cheap nasty house outside the city. Good luck with it all. Starting early makes a massive difference later in life!

Yet another fantastic video! This is how i try to live my life but as you know, it is hard not to get sucked back into the "I want" rather than the "I need" sort of living. I WANT a new beta RR, but the reality is, that my TE310 is just fine for the type of riding I do, and the skill level I am currently at. Not to mention all the work i've done to my TE, as I bought it used in a very sorry state.
@crosstrainingenduro
@crosstrainingenduro 7 лет назад
being 'sucked into' that style of living is a great way of describing it... i try to remind myself regularly that all those ads are trying to tell me i won't be happy until i buy that extra stuff, when the reality is i can be perfectly happy with the way things are - and in fact i'm way better off than most people in less developed countries. :)

Atm im single, no kids and young (23), buying a house and paying off dept for the next 10 years just sounds boring. Barry, have to pass on my thanks to you for putting the philosophical dirt rider series together - my wise better half overheard your musings a few minutes back and now she's joined me on the couch to watch the series, she initially said you sound like an accountant until she listened and now she thinks you are a dirtbiking reincarnation of Buddha who also sends our baby to sleep.

lol thanks damian! it's surprising the number of cases of insomnia i seem to have solved over the past few years. i'm really glad so many viewers like the philosophical series, initially i thought it might go over like a lead balloon....

couldn't agree more, everything is about money, when you go to school you have it rambed down your throat that you've got to do well or you won't get the high paid job and do well in life , people need to start enjoying life a slower one not filled with got to have advertised crap see everyday. as for branded stuff they should pay us for advertising there goods not charge a bloody fortune for it . rant over 😮 another great vid thanks

So I shared this with everyone I know, amazing video and great channel. Also never understood the buy a brand new bike thing, Like motorcycles don't change much. I bought a 2007 KTM 450 myself and love it, brand new one has fuel injection and ummmm an extra 10k price tag.

yes i usually have a chuckle at how the magazines rave about the small changes made each year... occasionally there might be something major that could make someone a marginally better rider but usually it's tiny stuff. :)

true but i guess the main point is millionaires AREN't any happier than your average joe anyway. they've done research on people who win millions in lotto and a year later they are back to their old happiness (or unhappiness) levels. i know it sounds weird coz we all think we'd have to be happier if were rich but in the long term it seems to make no difference.... :)

Since watching this video, I've sold all my possessions except the Jeep and DRZ400. I always dreamt of a Jaguar XJ 6 2series. Allways loved the Supermarine Spitfire mk16. After 40 years of hard work, I'm happy to have a 250WRF and a beautiful Volvo S90 ( and a house that please my wife with a large garage for my bike😎)

One more advice, don't borrow money from anyone you know. Later in life if you retire to do your own shit they might come back and remind you that they borrowed you this money to buy X and not to retire and ride dirt bikes. Achieve it alone and no one will be able to tell you how to live your life. 10 more years to retirement...

Can you please explain this to my missus?? I think the happiest people live the simplest life....... & own lots of bikes. When ever I feel the vibe of 'I want I want I want' off someone. All I can think is 'but do you really need??' A perfect analogy of what not to fall into is: Life: Early- lots of energy & time, no money. Middle- lots of money & energy, No time Late- lots of money & time, no energy. Just my thoughts on it....

My cousin had a chevy van just like that one.. It handled like a tank..but it's nice and simple compared to all the new cars with electronic everything and they cost so much to fix and maintain. I like air con though. I don't think that van had that.
