I'm no electrician, have a degree in electronics, and have been an industrial technician for over 40 years working electronics, electrical and mechanical. I NEVER trusted those pens for one reason and one reason only... WHEN the battery dies on that pen, you NEVER KNOW if it's reading or not and "A.S.S.U.M.E" there's no power because it didn't light up or beep. I NEVER owned one and I will NEVER own one for that single reason. I ALWAYS rely upon my trusty DMM, that is digital multi-meter. You turn it on, display comes on and I KNOW it's powered up AND working. Great videos, subscribed and learning electrical every time. You just "might" one day make an electrician out of this electronics tech😁🫡👍

Nice and clear, thanks! I have a suggestion for a new video: How to add a 3-way switch to a light where the existing switch has the power coming down from the light (i.e., a switch loop). I just did one myself and the wiring took me a bit to figure out because I couldn't find any how-to videos that covered the wiring in any useful detail.

Really nice video, my daughter work at a artistic school she decided to be a teacher. She said that this is her calling. My question is that I put a dimmer switch in and it turns on at the dimmer and turns on and off at the other light switch. However, if the dimmer switch is off the other switch want turn the light back on. Is this the way it works with a dimmer switch. Could you make a video with a dimmer 3 way? Please advise?

How Would you wire up a 3 way switch with 3 lights in between the switches Would you run 14-2 and 14-3? I am rewiring my older home the wire I seen better days it's all corroded and crumbling so I pulled it all out and I'm adding new had 3 recessed lights in between 2 switches which is with a 3 way and I was wondering how do I wire them? They had the 14 - 31 running through the lights to the other switch and that was it and one black switch leg
@MountaineerOutdoors
@MountaineerOutdoors 2 года назад
I would put it back exactly how it was. Me though I would do it 12-3 between the switches and one 12-2 up to the light. In your case though if you can do that do it. If not put it back just like it was so there won't be any confusion.

i changed my 3 way switches and never had an issue with the light working. After I changed them the switches do not work as it should. Both switches have the ground screw on bottom left. Brass screw upper left and upper right and black screw bottom right. Upstairs switch, black wire upper left, cream wire upper right and red wire on black screw. Downstairs switch I have cream upper left, black upper right and red on black screw. Basement switch is up and light does not work at all. Basement switch flipped down, light turns on from upstairs. I tried having both switches wired the same way (black upper left, cream upper right and red bottom right) and light didn't work on either end. I only have 3 wires and not sure why I am having this issue. I changed another 3 switch same way and works as it should. Any help? Thanks

I have a weird situation on my 3 ways. It was wired by an electrician, but one of the switches need to be in a certain position for them to work properly. I took them apart last night, and they actually have the white wire connected to the switch, which I thought was odd. With the wires disconnected from the switch and the breaker back on, I tested them and the white and red are hot, black is not (so I'm assuming the black is running to the light. But why is the white hot?

If someone pulls a panel and puts a 20A breaker on a 14g circuit, they need a claw hammer upside the head. I don't agree with you about only using 14g on detectors. But it's your house man. I've run 14g since before 12g was yellow. (pre romex color coding) -Plus, you can't use the quick connect holes on the back of 15A plugs w/12g wire. that's my 2¢
@MountaineerOutdoors
@MountaineerOutdoors 6 лет назад
I agree.. Ive pulled in romex before it was color coded too.. However I've been behind so many "electricians" who pull whatever it takes... Before too long you have a mess. And your exactly right it is my house and my customers and I will protect them and my license from anyone coming behind me jack legging it. To each their own but it's not just not worth saving s few dollars buying 14 guage wire in my opinion.

Hey man, I watched your video and was able to fix the issue where I had hooked the power and travel wire wrong. Of course, one switch worked but the other switched killed the first one from working. LOL. But in my house instead of having power, neutral and ground all coming into the switch or light I have a single black coming into the switch tied to a white going out. My house was built in the 60's and every light is like that. Can you explain this type of wiring to me or in a video?
@MountaineerOutdoors
@MountaineerOutdoors 4 года назад
Sounds like they just ran down a 12-2 or a 14-2 the probably fed the hot wire hot and the black wire back to the light the return hot. Or back in the 60's they use to switch neutrals which is very dangerous. If you don't have a hot at all in your switch box then it's probably a switched nuetral. Use a tick tracer (voltage tester) and see. Let me know what you find

No problem. They just kept the main power in the light box. A good rule to remember is that everything is hot until you check it. The two wires in your switch box are just for the switch. @MountaineerOutdoors
@MountaineerOutdoors 3 года назад
What I mean is one of the switches will be the hot switch meaning that is where you brought your power to. The other switch will be going to light so it will be the switch side. Don't read too much into that otherwise it may start to confuse you, once you get the switch wired you will see what I mean and you will understand. I hope that helps you. Let me know if you get it. @MountaineerOutdoors 4 года назад
Yes you can. Not the traveler just the hot. You will have to find a nuetral. If you decide to use a traveler as a nuetral you must phase it white or just make sure you use the white wire and hook it to the nuetral.

If you use a color red or black for a nuetral. You must take white tape and put it on the wire to designate it leer letting everyone know that now that is a white wire and u are using it as a nuetral. You need to do the exact same on both ends of the wire.

Mountaineer Outdoors The power comes into the switch 14/2 goes to the light, 14/3 goes to both switches. Then 14/2 goes to the step lights. I connected the 1 light to the step lights then to one on the switch screws. The common is connected to the common on both switches. All white wires are connected and grounds are connected. Here’s the problem. The 3 way switch works to turn them all on. (The switch where the power comes in). The other 3 way switch at the top of steps only turns the original fixture off. Not the step lights. Cray???????

The only way it will work is to put the step lights on with the other lights you currently have working right. You will have to put only the black wire for the step lights with the wire going to the old lights by way of a pig tail. It has to be done like that otherwise it will not work.did this confuse you? If so I'm not an artist but email me and I will try to draw it up and show you.

So the question I have is in the basement, I have a light that I can turn on and off at the stairs. I would like to have a switch at the other basement door to turn the light on or off. Can you help me wire up a switch. Using a junction box.? I too have friends that are special. Love them dearly 🙏👍

If i had multiple light in the middle and two dimmer switch at each end what it would look like?
@MountaineerOutdoors
@MountaineerOutdoors 5 лет назад
It would look like the drawing except with more lights. However, you can only use one 3 way dimmer and the other side would have to be a regular 3 way. If you wanted to switch them at each light location you would have a 3 way then 4 way switches at each light location ending with a dimmer or regular 3 way at the end of the line. Make sense? Hope that didn't confuse you.

I’ve got a 3 way switch situation that gave me a bit of a headache today. I have a Single gang 3 way next to the door at my garage. That has 1 black, 1 red, neutral and ground going to the switch. This runs to a 2 gang box on the other side of the garage, where there is a 3 way switch and a normal light switch for an outside light. That 2 gang has a 14/2 hot leg coming from somewhere , 14/3 going to the single gang I mentioned earlier and 14/2 going to the light overhead. It works as a 3 way switch no problem, with no secondary hot in the single gang box. When I tried to install an occupancy switch at my single gang box, without a neutral. The switch would only work if the 2 gang 3 way was on. any advice? Seems strange that my single gang doesn’t have a power source and only the 14/3 from the 2 gang.
@MountaineerOutdoors
@MountaineerOutdoors 4 года назад
so this situation is pretty typical the single gang 3 way probably is the switched part of the 3 way side. you wont have a constant hot in there but you will have one side of the 3 way switch hot,(confused yet)... I can tell you from experience that I have a occupancy sensor in my garage as well and if i get any extension cord or anything with any power near the sensor it will not work right it will actually go off and on all the time. now I know that isnt the answer your looking for but wanted to throw that in. Back the the question at hand, seems to me and I could be wrong but you may need to 1 either leave the switch in the on position all the time or 2 get another occupancy sensor for the other side of the 3 way believe it or not I have 2 on mine same almost that same thing as your saying. I had to add 2 due to the fact that when I went out of sight of my one near the door it would turn off due to the fact that I didnt have any motion near it. That solved my problem. I gonna say that you will have to do one of the two things I mentioned. Let me know what you do but that is exactly what fixed my problem.

Nice! You do make it look pretty easy, though. One question, because I am not an electrician, with so much copper of the ground exposed, aren't you worried about a potential short when pushing it all back into the switch box/housing?
@MountaineerOutdoors

@grassroots9304

The ground doesn't carry electricity except in the event of a direct short in the load (or connections to the load) and then it's only long enough to trip the breaker (which is why it's there). He's using solid wire as opposed to stranded wire. Solid wire is much stiffer and better at retaining the shape/position it's stuffed into. It won't just bounce up and hit the connection screws on an outlet or a switch. The only concern I see is that the bare copper might hit a hot wire and trip a breaker. Again, if it's placed carefully and with understanding of where/why and what can go wrong if it's not done correctly, you should have no problem. I'm just a DIYer with electrical but I do a lot for being a DIY guy (I've done dozens of outlets and quite a few switches, and several new and refit panels) and I've never had a problem. Obviously, professional electricians (like this guy) have done far more than I, but notice that his response didn't scream red flags...this is safe and pretty tame.

Have a question, maybe a dumb question but I need to understand. Why is there a need for 2 different runners, ie black and red? Couldn't the 3 way switches still function with only one runner? Would this be too dumb to show on a video for nubies like me?

you need a 12-3 or a 14-3 but a 3 way switches the hot from one side to the other. There is no other good way to do it and its the most simple.

The RIGHT way to tape an outlet: So far, I have NEVER seen this done correctly. To wrap the electrical tape, first "don't wrap it while it is stretched!" Pull a piece off the roll long enough to go around the outlet about 1 to 1-1/2 times: Then BEFORE you put it around the outlet, LET IT RELAX (un-stretch), then put it around the outlet pressing firmly onto the surface. The reason for this is that over time it will un-stretch. Then repeat with another piece of tape around in the opposite direction.

@MountaineerOutdoors

When you refer to the jump off wire are you referring to the hot that is feeding on to your bathroom? If it's only a hot you need to make a joint on those two wires and then run one wire to your switch. Do not put two wires on the switch screw.
