One of my friends just messaged me saying they've managed to damage their pendant and if I can fix it. Never seen the inside of a ceiling rose before but this tutorial makes things nice and simple. I've cabled up plenty of low voltage/high ampage stuff before but was a bit scared about this kind of thing. Turns out it's a *lot* easier than I expected. I'll certainly take a copy of the circuit diagram though! Should only take a few minutes once the power's off.

@@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE I did manage to fix it properly thanks to your tutorial (the circuit diagrams are a really helpful reference). It took ages and I fouled up strippimg new wire (so their light is now much closer to the ceiling!) but that's probably because I've never done mains or overhead chop-blocking before so I was being incredibly cautious and clumsy respectively.

A lot of time you'll find the switching cable isn't marked as such, but it's easy to identify as itll be in a 2 block terminal in the ceiling rose, the issue with this video, obvious to yourself and electrically minded people, is someone wants to fit a new lighting pendant that also has an earth wire, by looking they can see where everything goes, photograph it and rewire etc. But some won't know where the earth wire goes, even if they see an earth block.. I know this sounds kind of silly, but most people who don't understand wiring system and are fitting a different light are likely to be using a light fitting with an earth. Ok we know earth is always earth, but explaining that in the video may have helped.

Hi. Thanks for the video. I had an issue with a bedroom rose and yiur drawing hepled me out (thanks). From the original wiring there were 2 wires going to some connectors while other connectors were left empty SO I decied to statr from the beginning and with 3 cables I tested all 3 cables to ensure that I knew which was the switch cable ( used multi meter on resistance for open and close circuit ) then wired the switch at the rose and then wired the two lives and the 2 neurrals just like your diagram and then it just worked - RESULT :-)

Nice video. You make me feel I can do this. One question though and it may be a silly one. How do I determine which set of wires is the loop in and which is the loop out? Or maybe it doesn’t matter, providing I keep the wires from one set separate from the other?

Great video ! Does it matter which way around the two cables are wired into the loop and neutral? Those two are unidentifiable and I’ve just changed all my pendants and somewhere the circuit has been cut off but I can’t see a fault 🤦🏻‍♀️

Good video, thanks but how do you know which cables are going to the switch & which are going to the adjoining room (Loop)? May have been a good idea to talk about Black & Red cables as well, as you know (I assume your like me & fron the UK) that our old cables are that colour.

I put a table in the video at 1min 29 seconds to show old colours to new colours conversion. You shouldn't have skipped the video! 🤣 As for light switch cable, you need to test power if unsure. Loop will always have power and switch will have power to one wire all the time, but only the other wire when switch is turned on. If done properly it should be colour coded as in my video, so blue wire should have brown tape or sheath over it to show its a switched live.

Needed to put a light under the staircase storage area. I want to run the live feed from a socket in the kitchen. Is it only an fcu needed inbetween the socket and lighting ???

You would need an Fused Connection Unit and replace the fuse with a 3amp fuse. Please ensure this is done safely by getting it checked by an electrician. Thanks for watching.

Yes they are. If they weren't then it wouldn't work properly. I have seen another video where the electrician shows that each group of terminals are linked by a metal strip. So, just to be clear: the 3 neutral terminals are linked to each other; the 3 live loop terminals are joined to each other; and the 2 live switch terminals are joined together.

i have a ceiling rose in my bathroom which has 6 cables in .. inc the load(lamp) am currently refurbing the bathroom and was thinking of changing the rose for "Quickwire" fittings as the new luminare needs an earth, i could then run a supply from a splitter to a LED / buetooth mirror fitting... which seems straight forward enough.. until i came to adding the extractor fan.. i now need to incorporate a 3 core and earth into the system for a switched live/timer function ... any ideas ?

I have a video on fitting an extractor fan which my help - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Bi34gxa_-Mk.html If you follow that, you can then run you power to the mirror light from that and it means both you fan and mirror light can be safely isolated by the isolation switch when working on them for maintenance. Does it matter which live wire goes into what loop terminal? I can see which wires are the live ones but not sure which one is the loop in and loop out.

How do you handle a fitting with only live and neutral on the brick? I have two way switching to a single light, but my brick has no loop section at all

Sounds like rather than a ceiling rose, you have a junction box somewhere so this final cable is just the feed to the light. That said without seing it I can't really comment. Not sure what it is you are looking to do, but if you're unsure please be safe and employ a good electrician. Thanks for watching!

Hi Pouse, On my ceiling rose, it only has one cable (feed) coming through the ceiling- live, neutral and earth. How do I terminate these? Can I also ask “On the loop out, where does it terminate on the other ceiling rose? Does it go into neutral and line? This will be the last termination point i.e.no further loop out, Thanks, love your videos, very informative.

If you have one cable, it sounds like it's daisy chained from a previous light meaning two lights come on together. If this is the case then take the live wire to the line terminal, neutral wire to the neutral terminal and earth wire to the earth terminal. That said without looking and testing it could be anything so if in doubt use a qualified electrician. Safety first and best of luck!

I realise this is late but anyway... Probably the loop in/out wiring and the switch wire are above the ceiling and they've just brought down the cable for the lamp. Hope that helps.

Not sure, without seeing the setup it's hard to say. Sounds like a neutral is connected to live/line. Did you manage to get it sorted after?

Just to clarify, it's fine if there is room for the connectors in the back of the fitting like in modern metal light fittings. Just don't push them up into the ceiling.

I am replacing 2 dimmable light fitting with pendants, and the first light doesn't have a switch cable going to it. So they won't turn off fully... any ideas?

It's probably daisy chained to the other pendant? If so it should turn on and off with the other light using one switch? If that's not the case how is the light turned on and off?

Well I assume the light fitting is plastic double insulated and doesn't require earthing. If this is the case then just terminate the earth wire into a a suitable connector block so it can't make contact with any other wires. This can be left in void in the light fitting by the other wires. Just be sure the fitting doesn't require earthing. If it does, then you must connect the earth wire to the fitting. Great video. One quick question. In your drawing 46 seconds in I have neither the 2nd Loop out nor the switch. I only have the power "in" Loop (there being a 3 pin fused plug at the end which will only be plugged into a traditional socket as and when the light is required. Infrequently. I was intending on having such hanging in the Barn as a temporary source of light - not to be left "live" for any length of time. Is it simply a case of wiring both bulb "live" wire and loop in "live" into the Loop section of the ceiling rose? Or does one put the Bulb live and loop in "live" wire into Live part(ie in your drawing where switch normally wired in) I'm not an electrician so appreciate any feedback Thanks

Just to check, I think you have a length of cable with a plug on the end (with 3amp fuse?) and you want to wire it into a ceiling rose to fix to the ceiling. It's not a particularly common thing to do but if that is the case, then just wire the live wire to the line (L) terminal, neutral wire to neutral (N) terminal, and earth wire to earth (E) terminal. Then your pendant will have 2 wires a live an neutral. Wire the Neutral wire into a neutral (N) terminal, a the live wire into the line (L) terminal. You can leave the loops empty as they are not required for what you are doing. Just make sure you have a cable at least 1mm2 twin and Earth, and plug with a 3amp fuse. This should than be safe to use. Hope that helps. Good luck and thanks for watching!

I fitted a new LED Light (manufactured in Europe) pendant on to loop, but it didn't have all those connections for a loop so I used one of those clip kit things. The pendant did not have a terminal for the earth, so I just twisted them together and shoved it aside, does anyone know of that will cause a problem?

I have inherited this set up in my house. The previous idiot, took the light fittings and left all wires hanging. It is single switch for two lights. Unfortunately, the switch live is not identified on the second rose. Diy options, or not good?

If you're just replacing like for like, then it doesn't really matter as 'in' and 'out' go into the same terminal. If you're not sure then get an electrician to test it for you. Thanks for watching!

Hi How can you tell which one is loot in and loot out? I have old wiring in my house its black and red. My upstairs lights went completely off several days ago at night, I went to turn on my bedroom light and the bulb flickered and all lights went out but it didn't trip the consumer unit. My upstairs lights are on one circuit on my consumer unit 3 bedrooms and 2 bathroom all the lights are out expect for the shower room working? Its strange bcz it didn't trip the board. I've checked all celing fittings if any loose connection and have been in the loft to check the junction box everything is connected securely but no current is showing in neither 3 bedrooms or one family size bathroom. Its extremely difficult due to lockdown dont want call a professional in due to Covid19. Any advice would be appreciated.

Alright mate. Great vids. But I've got a scenario for you. How would you add 1) a PIR sensor to allow lights to come on Automatic when in sensor range? 2) add 3 additional downlights (Spotlights) to the same circuit as the ceiling rose. So Ceiling Rose - Sensor - 3x Down lights. I've bought 3x choco boxes for each down lights. Can you make a vid tutorial explain this please Thanks

Hi Asim, I won't be able to vid any time soon.I have a video of how to wire downlights - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DjtB6OnjvlE.html. Just take the length of twin and earth from the switched live. neutral, and earth on existing light. Then when light switch goes on, all lights go on together. I can't explain the PIR over a message. Cheers for getting back to me. I'm confident connecting the down-lights from Ceiling Rose. But thought I'd be extra in getting a PIR, someone did mention to get a junction box for it. But No probs. Great Videos and thanks again.

You can buy a switch wire two brown and earth mate I'm not even an electrician I'm bricky lol

Yes you can, more expensive though and most electricians have lots of twin and earth so it's just easier to use the brown, blue, earth cable.

I'm totally confused. The wires coming in from the ceiling are only blue/brown and earth. They don't have 3 wires as shown. Coming in from the pendant there is a blue and black. So basically blue to blue, brown to brown and an earth. They don't split off to 3 can anyone shed light on this. Do I connect the 2 lives together and the 2 neutral together. I put up a fancy light and had no issues. These ceiling roses seem. More complicated.

Sounds like there is a junction box in the ceiling so if you try brown to brown, blue to blue and earth to earth it should work. That said please be careful and get a qualified electrian to do it for you if in doubt. Bad wiring could cause a fire or a shock. Make sure power is off before you try it. Thanks for watching.

@@melinmove if you're talking about in the switch, yes it's good practice to terminate the earth into a connector like a wago if there is no terminal point in the switch or back box. 👍
