I hooked my grinder up to this VFD, and so far it's a success! I'm going to make an enclosure out of some scrap 16g steel, and an old electrical panel. I'll post the final product on IG. Can't wait for the belts from Brodbeck to arrive so I can really get this beast dialed in

Was hesitant to make that upgrade from my treadmill dc motor/controller to the kbac/ironhorse setup but its made a world of difference! Thanks for the tips! I ran into an issue where the attached mounting bracket on the ironhorse motor relative to my dc motor caused the motor to protrude about two inches further out, throwing my whole setup out of alignment. Had to do some creative modifications to my grinder motor mount to accommodate the new motor and have it align with the platen and tracking wheel.

Very good Brian. A couple of points of interest. Swap any two motor wires (W, V, U) to get the motor to run in the opposite direction. You can program the acceleration time to "ramp up" to target speed. I use 8 seconds so I can adjust the tracking if needed before the belt gets up to full speed. A lot of these low cost VFDs will display Hz or RPM. You will have to program the number of motor poles, typically 2 or 4. Reading the manual, even if partly in Cantonese, can be pretty helpful. Of course, keep it cool and away from the metal dust. I have a couple of these and a KBAC-27D. I am happy to say they are all working good. Knock on wood. Cheers!

Im borrowing this post hopping to get a good respons(: Im Looking at a grinder with an equal setup and o e thing Im interested is exactly being able to change the direction on the motor to ge the belt going backwards, more expensive modells seems to have this feature but this cheap dont to my understanding. My understanding of electrobics aint the best but i had it also in the back of my head that switching the wires would accomplishe it. Is there a smart way one could wire that up to a single switch? Like having double wires going to the motor and by a turn of the switch change the polarity. Perhaps it would need 2 switched that both world as on switches one for forward and one for reverse. I do have friends that can help me do the actuall work so that i dont electrocute myself but they dont have experience from this so hopefully a can get some guidence here If i understand the possibility correct or not(:

@@grimmner consult your specific manual on external control options. Swapping polarity at the motor is not typically recommended with a switch

This is great! I think its probably a very good substitute for a shopsmith powerPro! The later is actually a switched reluctance - one sep above the ac induction you are doing but even another step above both would to rebuild the rotor and add permanent magnets to achieve the MOST efficient IPMSynRM!

You have barely scratched the surface of the Chinese VFDs which are very similar but have a myriad of programmable parameters to allow starting at a low frequency for a short time (you select the time) after which the unit can switch to a second higher frequency or directly to the maximum run frequency. The parameters can be altered to select how long each startup frequency stays in seconds before the next frequency kicks in. The maximum frequency can be significantly higher than standard American 60 cycles/second. Be sure your motor can handle the higher frequency. Many of he units have a built in Braking Resister to allow you to select a braking time. In addition they almost all have the ability to add a emergency stop switch, run, reverse, and other things. The little control panel buttons are very small to find in an emergency stop scenario. There are over 100 parameters and the manuals are written by people speaking english as a second language, although very good , they refer to parameters that are not always what we would call them. I have used these VFDs for 5 years now running my Bridgeport and 2 x 72 grinder (by a design that I will replace with your design). I have had only one fail but support from China is not good. I have one coming that will support a 30 meter cable (included) so I can mount the unit in the nearest clean environment, far away from metal dust. My Bridgeport VFD supports a 6 meter cable and I mounted the box about 10 feet above the floor, the control panel below my DRO. Has been successful for three years and counting.
@HouseMadeUS
@HouseMadeUS 4 года назад
Yeah I agree, I see the instructions and there is so much to learn. Also I was looking at the HZ rating and my motor should only go to 60 so I will have to adjust that. It said I was up to 65. Not sure if that will hurt the motor or ??

Doood -- "Buy once, cry once" is the rule to live by. Always buy the best tool possible. Cutting corners is almost never worth the cost in performance. I will save for years to get the right tool for the job. That said, if there's an alternative that's THAT much cheaper, and it has a ton of people saying it works well, it's worth the time to investigate.~$280 difference on a VFD is good $$ that can be spent on other parts needed. Get a good 2-3hp reversible TEFC motor and you can always buy an upgraded VFD if the cheap one craps out some day.

I find it very interesting, now if there is a way to pull out a wire from the connections of the VFD (most VFD has that option too) and connect to a potentiometer in a separate box and easy acessible to your place of work) of a big knob. Sometimes when you are doing mechanical works with the gloves on your hands, it much convenient to access the knob than the small switch on the VFD.

Brian, that's pretty much the same VFD I just put on my Bridgeport Mill. It's been running for a couple weeks now and working great. I used a plastic remote box and a couple magnets so I can put the little control pad wherever I want. I hate the plastic collars on the crimp connector too. I solder mine after crimping too. I order the terminals without the plastic.

Brian you need to put your backing plate for the belt out farther out, to make contact with the belt, and you should put a slight radius at the ends of the plate. If you were sanding a square piece of metal and you pressed it up against the backing plate, your part would be convex really fast.

Not sure what you mean by a dust shield for the cord going into the motor. By code, it's supposed to have a connector. What kind of connector depends on where the motor will be located. Since it's most likely to be used inside, it doesn't have to be a rain tight connector but using one would still be ok. I love this belt grinder and plan on building one but I have a few things I need to build and sell before I can do it. Plan on ordering your kit for it too. The time savings for me by using the kit outweigh the cost of the kit.
@Stillpoint23
@Stillpoint23 2 года назад
A standard box connector and some clear silicone caulk will work perfectly. An soow connector will work even better if using that as your supply/feed, however, you might have to enlarge the knockout to accommodate a 3/4" connector. S step drill will accomplish the task no problem
@richardtullius6419

House / Work I thought that might be your answer but not a good idea, it’s about circuit protection, not about what is convenient. I love your grinder and expect to buy the kit in the very near future so I’m not here just to rag on you. You are looking for perfection in your grinder but you need to understand a little more about the electrical side. The NEC says the receptacle must match what is being plugged into it, and the circuit breaker is sized by the receptacle amp rating, it’s about safety and fire protection, plugging a 20 amp motor into a 50 amp circuit means the motor will burn to the ground long before the 50 amp circuit breaker trips. Please call a electrician and have them install the proper receptacle. This advice comes from a retired electrical contractor with 40+ years of experience. Keep the videos coming, keep improving your grinder.

Hi Richard, thank you for your help man. After I read this I swapped out the 40amp for a 30 amp and made a dedicated circuit for the grinders. That way I am not sharing the plug with my bigger gear. I appreciate you taking the time to comment and give direction that I can use! Many Many thanks.

Looks remarkably easy. Can I ask the reason you used 10 guage wire for the input? Its only a 110v, single phase inverter, would an ordinary extension lead do the job just as well?

Just got my revolution kit last week and motor came today (still waiting on the Chinese vfd). Couple questions: 1. I noticed on this vfd and motor you used 10 and 12 gauge cables and on the kbac wiring video you used 14 gauge for both whips, I assume 14 gauge is good for the Chinese and motor? 2. I have a 50 amp service I use for my welders and plasma cutter, would I be ok to use this for the grinder as well or should I put the grinder on a smaller breaker?
@HouseMadeUS

Yeah the 14 gauge works great. The motor and VFD don't pull a lot of amps so 14 gauge is perfect.

More than forty years ago I started buying 3 ph equipment, most of it obsolete industrial machines. At first I synthesized 3 ph with a home-built rotary converter. I added utility-provided 3 ph as soon as I could afford the installation. That made sense when I was able to buy 3 ph power at residential rates. Now, in my new shop, the cost of 3 ph power is sobering. There is a monthly minimum several times greater than my actual usage. My store room holds more than a dozen perfectly good spare used motors none of which cost me more than $100 and that is a 15 hp Lincoln. The rest were $40 or less. Often they were free. Anyone wanting powerful, variable speed machinery ought to stick with single phase and outfit them with VFD drives.

Why such a massive input cord and plug? Full load with that inverter/motor will be 10-12 amps, which could be easily handled by 14 AWG (maybe even 16 AWG). Similarly, a 20A circuit (and plug) would be more than enough.
@HouseMadeUS

It’s what I had laying around. I wouldn’t go 16. 12 seems about right. Thanks for watching.
@Stillpoint23
@Stillpoint23 2 года назад
No, 14 or 16 must not be used. The upshot of the comment below: 1) check your electrical system a) is the panel stab-lok, or federal pacific, in poor condition? Consider upgrading if so b) is your system wired with knob and tube or BX? Take steps to ensure that it's safe, especially K&T c) is your system properly grounded? See below 2) 20amp breaker is really 16 amps a) use 12 gauge (#12) wire, 10 gauge for long runs to mitigate resistance b) residential ckt breakers are not rated for continuous use, so #12 is recommended if not compulsory 3) Grounding a) at the very least, properly ground your ckt supplying your grinder, and bond your water heater if needed In my experience, 12g is the minimum on a 20a ckt. 10g would be better in order to decrease resistance especially if using a cord in lieu of hard wiring. 16 amps is 80% of 20a, and the VFD has a 12a output. Since residential ckt breakers are not rated for continuous use, it's best to over build for better protection from overheating. Furthermore, I would HIGHLY recommend taking note of both how old and what brand of panel you have as older homes may have Stab-Lok, or federal Pacific panels which are hazardous. One more point about older homes is many are wired with BX which technically has a grounding system, but many are not wired properly, and the grounding wire is so thin it's often broken. So, check your system thoroughly, and if tying into ungrounded or substandard grounding, at the very least ground the system you are installing by running a ground wire from your metal box to a water pipe then bond your water heater if it already is not. Sorry for the long winded comment, but safety first. I'll put the upshot at the beginning for those who would rather not read this all the way... 😜
