I have a side-by-side CanAm UTV with a 12V battery. There is a power distribution terminal under the dash that will energize when the ignition is on (there's a ground lug near by as well). Also, there are color coded wires passing through the firewall from this location directly to where the battery is located. I wish to provide power to my stereo, light bar, whip lights, back lights and rock lights via this distribution terminal using rocker switches. My question is this: will this be too much for this terminal and should I use an individual 30 or 40a relay for each device? Also, regarding the stereo...if I use a relay, can I jump 87a to 87, so when the ignition is off the stereo can stay on, or is there a better way of doing that? I can would manually turn the stereo off when not in use. Thanks for your advice in advance!!

I’m going to be wiring my switch side from the negative feed(85) on a 4 pin. 86 would still need a 12v power source right? So could I just add it to a fuse block? 30- battery main source 87- whatever accessory power source 86- fuse block? 85- negative /ground switch
@HotRodHippie
@HotRodHippie 4 года назад
87 should be whatever accessory you want to control. 87 is where the power from 30 goes when the relay is activated. 86, yes should just be a fused power source as you are controlling the relay on the ground side (85). Relays are low amperage draws 1/2A. So a small fuse in line or a low power source in the fusebox should be fine. 👍👍

What if I wanted to add lights to my f150 grille that automatically turned on when the headlights came on? Instead of adding a switch, would I just splice that wire to the headlight wiring?
@HotRodHippie
@HotRodHippie 4 года назад
You’d splice into your headlight wiring with a Relay yes. If it were me I’d send power to the Relay on terminal 85 (ground on 86 or vice versa) and that will activate the relay to power your additional lights.

@HotRodHippie

@@jaybozios6891 no 87 is the wire that will go to your new lights to supply them with 12v Power. 30 is your battery supply for your new lights. 85/86 are your “Control” wires. So one of those splices into your existing headlight wire (and the other goes to ground).

I am wiring a 50 amp trolling motor, I want a low amp switch to turn on and of power to the unit. I wonder do I need a 50amp 4 pin relay ? Or can I use a lower amp relay.....
@HotRodHippie
@HotRodHippie 4 года назад
To my knowledge those are usually just wired with a circuit breaker(50A). I can't quite picture using a relay to wire one since the controls of a trolling motor are usually built into the motor, aren't they? If you do wish to use a relay, I would not feel comfortable with a 50A unless it specifically stated it was rated for a sustained load. I'd want a little head room on the rating personally. Some motors can spike over their rated draw for short increments. Or I could see using a Trolling Motor wide up for long enough periods to be concerned. Hope this helps.

so why go to a switch power with the white wire? why not join it to the red wire its power? same as finding another power supply this is the part i am having a problem with
@HotRodHippie
@HotRodHippie 4 года назад
Andrew Wiseman because then the relay is just always On. A Relay is a control device, it is basically a switch that can handle a heavy load. So a switch that never turns off serves no purpose. The circuit on 85/86 has to have some control of its own so it can turn off and on the relay. So there needs to be a switch or something to activate and deactivate the relay.
@HotRodHippie
@HotRodHippie 4 года назад
Andrew Wiseman you can join the “white wire” to the Red but then there has to be a switch on the Ground for the control circuit. That’s acceptable as well and often how relays on modern cars are wired.

This is a fantastic video and great explanation of how this relay works. Question, is it possible to have this relay ( or a different relay ) to send the ground instead of power? Some circuits I work with have ground as activation. Thanks in advance!!
@HotRodHippie
@HotRodHippie 4 года назад
Absolutely. You just wire your ground circuit through the relay instead of power side. In the same way, it doesn't matter if you control the "control" side of the rekay with Ground or Power switching. On the "Power" side the relay doesn't care what is happening, it's just completing a circuit. Thank you very much. 👍

You're saying 30 goes to battery and 87 goes to whatever device your connecting. I'm looking at a diagram for a motorcycle stereo amp and its showing the opposite..87 to battery and 30 to the amp. ???
@HotRodHippie
@HotRodHippie 4 года назад
It technically does not matter. I explain it that way because if someone has a 4 or 5 Terminal relay, either way what I said is correct. 30 is ALWAYS correct. Whereas 87 isn't ALWAYS correct. But to fully explain that would be at least a 5 minute video of it's own that few people would actually watch. On a 5 Terminal Relay 30 Provides power to either 87 OR 87A. So if I said "It doesn't matter which way you wire it" the 87A terminal wouldn't be able to serve its purpose if someone had that Relay and had a use for it. The Relay doesn't care which way power Flows but I was trying to avoid confusing some people by not over-explaining every facet of the matter. This is only a snippet from a larger video explaining How Relays work as a whole, so you may be missing quite a bit of context here.
@ronliebermann
@ronliebermann 2 года назад
Many years ago, I had a job which involved the installation of electronic temperature controllers. Each digital controller was connected to a pair of heavy-duty relays, which were used to energize heating coils for restaurant ovens. The wiring of relays in any type of machine is a pain in the neck because all of the wiring has to be routed, and then secured, and then tested. It’s time consuming. But actually, there’s no reason that relays should have to be wired on the low-side. They only need to be wired on the high-side where the current flows. So if you wanted, you could make Blue Tooth relays. They would receive commands from a Bluetooth-enabled output, such as an electronic temperature controller. That would cover the low-side, which would then then open and close the power circuit. A Bluetooth chip nowadays costs less than a dollar, so it wouldn’t increase the cost of the relay, and as a benefit the technician would no longer have to run low-side wires. That should reduce labor costs.

So, I have very limited electrical experience and would like someone’s opinion on a project I’m working on. I’m putting in under dash lights in my car. I want these lights to turn on when the car door is opened AND when the ignition of the car is switched on. I plan to accomplish this with a simple relay. I’d plug the battery into #30 (via a constant fuse tap) The lights (LOAD) into #87 The ground for the relay into #86 And then I’d use 2 different sources for the signal on #85 One signal would come directly from the dome lights that turn on when the door is opened. The other would come from a fuse tap from the accessory which only receives power when the car is on. Of course this means that sometimes both “signal” currents on #85 would be sending power at the same time as there will be times that I have the door open and the car on at the same time. Will this work or am I missing the point of a relay entirely?

I found the fog light fuse in the fuse box and was going to use one of those add a fuse to hook up the lights to. Should I go directly to the lights from the fuse box? Or is there a way to use a relay with the fuse that is switched? Hope I worded this so you understand what I am trying to do?
@HotRodHippie
@HotRodHippie 4 года назад
Check underhood in that fuse box, there may already be a Fog Light Relay present. If there is you'll likely just need the Fog Light harness and to splice in your lights. A lot of modern vehicles come wired for the accessory options, just minus the components themselves. When I used to work at a dealership we commonly did Fog Light installs on vehicles that didn't come with them and that was ten years ago. I'd check into that first. If you don't have the components necessary then check back with me and I'll try and walk you through it. 👍

I asked this on another of your videos, adding it here too: I want to add a kill switch to my 2021 Nissan NV 200 (small cargo van). I don't want to kill the battery because I want the security system to remain functional. So I thought a fuel pump relay kill switch would be good. However, auto shops around here won't do it...they say adding a kill switch would screw up the CAN bus. Scotty Kilmer (youtube guy) says the best way to prevent car theft is to just remove the fuel pump relay and take it with you. Sure, but that means I would need to open the hood, open the relay box, pull the fuel pump relay and take it with me...and when I got back, open the hood, put it back in. But I was thinking...would it be possible to relocate the fuel pump relay into the dashboard? Place an extender-type socket device, pass thru socket device, from the relay box in the engine compartment and run wires thru the firewall into the dashboard, to a pass thru socket which would accept the fuel pump relay? This way, I would just remove the fuel pump relay without having to open the hood, etc. There would be added distance that the signal would need to travel, say 6ft. But basically, I would have everything be a pass thru to the regular fuel pump relay which happens to be in the dashboard now. What do you think?

Can anyone help me out. I am trying to power my reverse lights. They are 2x2 pods. I want them to power up when I put the truck in reverse. But I already have a switch to them which I control manually. Is it possible to wire this in order to get both things working. When I put reverse they go on directly. And if I want them on just because I can use my switch already installed. Appreciate any help.

Thanks for your explaination, mate, but just a quick question, how to connect 85 86 if I don't need a swith for control circurt ? just leave the 85 and connect 86 to ground ?
@HotRodHippie
@HotRodHippie Год назад
There is always going to be a switch. If you just wire it Hot all the time the device it is controlling will be hot all the time. On a car we'd generally call it "Key Hot" because the ignition switch IS your switch for the relay. That is generally how a fuel pump is wired. There is still a control switch, just not a switch on the dashboard or whatever.

So.. ive run a 32 inch led lightbar off an eom switch that is fused but its not run off a relay... and my oem switch has burned out twice now. I need a relay dont I? Im very new to this stuff. Lol

Yes you absolutely need a relay in that situation. Use the switch to activate the Relay & let the Relay handle the load / switching on of the light.

Difference between 87 and 87a please?
@HotRodHippie

Check the Full Video this was a clip from for a full breakdown and explanation, the information you seek is there: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Xt0lC8mjJRI.html But the long and short of it is, 87 is your "Switched" circuit. It receives power when the Relay is Signaled to turn "On". 87A is the "Normally Closed" circuit. It turns OFF when the Relay is signaled on but is receiving the connection when the Relay is NOT energized and is just sitting there.

Why would you use a relay instead of just going straight to the positive and negative with a switch and fuse?
@HotRodHippie
@HotRodHippie 3 года назад
Most Switches aren’t rated for anything more than 10A. Switches that are get to be large and cumbersome, as well as ugly. Relays are rated for 30 or 40 Amps in the common design shown. Some can go even higher with different designs. Also you can often run a shorter wiring run with a relay. Say you have an Electric fan on your Radiator and your battery is right next to the radiator. Do you run wires from the battery, to the switch inside, then back to the Fan? Now your 20 Amp fan is pulling 20Amps through 12 foot of wire vs, 2 foot if you’d wired right from the battery to the fan with a relay. Often this means needing even larger sized wires to make that extra distance. Also now you have a wire running extra distance pulling 20 Amps. That’s a lot more chances for it to chafe and ground out. This was a small excerpt from a longer video explaining what Relays are and why they should be used: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Xt0lC8mjJRI.html

So if I use a really 30amp for my electrical fuel pump what size fuse should I use online with battery
@HotRodHippie
@HotRodHippie 4 года назад
That is entirely going to depend on the fuel pump in question. Most aftermarket pumps list what size fuse to use in their instructions. Maybe range from 10-30A so I can’t really say off hand.
