A great visual explanation on how switched receptacles work. As an 20+ yr electrician in the US you get a thumbs up for this video. Personally i prefer any box that is not metal for residential for easier and faster installs. I hate those types of metal boxes. Thanks for not stabbing the receptacles and switches in the back and for the good connection points on the switch and receptacle.

Bedroom in the middle still works. Help. I missed something - old outlets don't have tabs. Watched 10 videos.....what's the most likely problem? at the switch? a lot of wires in the switch.....

Our code calls for a switched receptacle in every inhabited room. Was trying to figure out how to put it in when there is a series of ten outlets and it's the middle one. Because of so many outlets in this large room, I was trying to avoid a three wire that would travel all the way to the other wall and also, how to you continue past this outlet with power.

Thanks for the video. Any ideas how I can find which receptacle a light switch is connected to ? I have a light switch in my living room and I assume it would power on/off one of the receptacles in the living room, but doesn't, I tested all receptacles. I opened up all receptacles, my best guess is a receptacle was replaced at some point and the light switch became redundant, but would like to try see which one it powers and hook it back up or find where it goes to ? I would like to use the light switch again.
@HouseImprovements
@HouseImprovements Год назад
Usually the switch will only control one of the outlets on a duplex so unless you checked both top and bottom outlets on each duplex you could have missed it. If it was unhooked then you would be looking for a unhooked and hopefully capped wire or two in a box. Could be white or black possibly. If you need more assistance please use my forum after.www.house-improvements.com/forums/

Here in Oregon, we can wire anything residential including a full service panel as long as its your own property and you pull a permit. I found the electrical inspector to be very helpful in making sure I understood the codes. Good info. Thanks.

great content, thanks! another owner of an older home here 😁i was planning to split the switched receptacle, but found that there's only 12/2 coming into the receptacle from the outlet. am i right in assuming i can't split the receptacle (half hot) without being able to run either a new 3 wire run to the switch or a single switch loop wire? (there's no great way for me to do that in the house....so if so i'll have to live with a fully switched receptacle 😒thanks!

Thanks for the video. On the first application you show, is it really necessary (other than code) to use 14-3 wire? Emphasis on the "three." If you're capping the white wire off at the switch, does that mean it's not used? So technically (not legally), could I use a 14-2 wire and just not have an extra wire to cap? I hope that makes sense. I have an existing outlet with a 14-2 going into it and a 14-2 coming out of it. I just want to connect a switch to the wires coming out of it. Hopefully you can answer. I kind of confused my self with this question.

If you don't mind me asking, I searched your videos but couldn't find one with my situation. We purchased a house that has a "toilet room" that was added on after the home was built. They ran the main power line to the light fixture first, then ran a 2 wire (black and white) 14-2 down to a single pole light switch (1 silver screw, 1 brass screw). There is no outlet in this room and I would like to add one. The easiest thing I could think of is adding a combo Switch/Outlet so I don't have to cut a hole in the wall. However, everything I am finding says you can't do it. You have to have at least 3 wires running to the switch (not including ground) and then tap into the power before it gets to the lamp. Do you have a video explaining a setup like this? I may have missed it in my searches. Thanks.
@HouseImprovements
@HouseImprovements 2 года назад
Ya what you have now is called a "switch leg". Power comes down one wire to the switch and when you flip the switch the power continues back through the second wire back to the list to power it. Foe a receptacle you need a neutral , which you dont have now at the switch. You need either another 14/2 from the power at the light position to the plug in or a 14/3 wire instead of the 14/2 you have going to the switch right now. For more help please come to my forum.www.house-improvements.com/forums/
@ShawnKirk007

@@HouseImprovements Thanks for the info! I think I will go the easy route and replace the 14/2 with a 14/3. I think there will be less headache and it will be easy enough to pull the new 14/3 wire through the wall using the existing 14/2 wire by pig-tailing them together and then pulling the wire.

No junction boxes for receptacles are not needed, use the proper boxes. Sometimes you need a square box with a mud ring if you have a lot of wires to accommodate but usually that is not an issue.
