Great video. I would've been afraid that the charge controllers would work against each other and back-feed power into one another, but then I realized that they can't because if they could the battery would back-feed power into them when the sun is not shining. I just converted my entire system from cheap to Victron, and what a dream!

I just saw the vid and had similar observations.. Thing is, observed the volts on array #1 at about 41V and array #2 at 19V. . Same question about the back feed by the arrray #1 into arry #2 at its lower voltage maybe causing something to short out. Can anyone clarify ?

Pretty easy to understand, thanks, of course to your presentation method. Ran it to a little hiccup in using the tool to size the CC. One panel recommendation using EZ is 100/30, using detailed it’s 100/50. Fine, purchased the latter. The problem arises in that I’ve purchased TWO of the same panels, instead of the One (intended). Using the Sizing Tool, it recommends 150/60 (EZ) or 150/85 (detailed). HUGE Price difference ! If I just bought another 100/50, would that serve my purposes just as well, though I suppose each panel would come in through roof independently. But, it would be A Lot cheaper to buy a second 100/50. Though, I wouldn’t benefit from the Smart Shunt, because I got an Alii. 😫

I'm setting up a 48v off grid system, using all Victron products, you've explained everything perfectly so far, very useful. but, I'm a bit stumped about balancing the batteries, at this stage I'm planning on using on using Victron Super Cell Lead batteries, I'm not not convinced about lithium yet, anyway, I'd love a video showing how to connect the Victron battery balancers, it's clear how to set it up for 12v, 48v banks need 3 balancers, given the cost of all this equipment, I'd like to get it right the first time. Hi Nate, Mate, your tutorials are awesome. Nate you mention in this tutorial the need for multiple charge controls if your array exceeds a single controller. What if i have a 100/30 and increase my battery size so the i now need more than 30. Let’s say i need 60amp. Can i introduce a second 100/30 (in parallel or series) to get the required 60amp or will i need to upgrade to a 150/75? Would really appreciate your insight. I image two 30amp controllers one would cancel out the other as one would see 30amp in or will VRM allow me to override or set both units to 30amp each?

This came out just in time. I'm in the middle of wiring in a smaller ground mount array into my RV system. It's been great so far but I want the extra umff for the AC this summer. One thing is my original system is not victron 😲 ( ohh no lol ) nor will be my ground mount system ( 😲 really ) I'm choosing not to change everything cause of the extra expenses for all new wiring and new equipment cause I know at that point I will just put it all in one system and that would add more than what I want just for the summer time. Now to my question. Since you use a combining box prior to the charge controllers do you need one to connect the two controllers together before you connect to the batteries ? I'm not much on leaving the internet on at all times cause it comes from my phone, that's mostly why I have not changed to victron. Just a side note. Great video series.

Great! Glad it helped. Given that you are indeed using some kind of busbars of some kind for high-amp DC distribution in your system as opposed to stacking a dozen different lugs directly onto your battery terminals... your charge controllers would indeed need to be connected to your busbars in some form before heading to your battery. Also... worth noting... the solar disconnect box isn't 'combining' anything. It is simply two breakers in one box. Each circuit passes straight through.

Nice video. The 3rd reason for using 2+ controllers is when your panels have different exposure to sun. Plus about your controller grounding cables, I'd make the cables the same length, the black cables you made seem one double the length of the other one, that makes one cable have double the resistance of the other.

I meant the Red cable. I'd still make the system fully symmetrical, using same length +/- cables. With short cables it's not much of a problem, but the longer the cable, bigger the impact

I was trying to go through all what I find on the internet about the setups with multiple charge controllers and no one ever mentioned nothing about overcharging "weak ones" with "stronger ones". I even find guys who connected different types of charge controllers with different output together with wide smile. In parallel setup, those regulators will be fighting with each other and their output will not be added up as we want. I was thinking that finally...this Lynx distributor will do the job, but than I read the manual and it is just intelligent fuse hub. In solar power stations, they use something like phase regulator which switch on and off every serial connected array one after each other so they don´t fight. But nobody here mentioned that , nor comes up with solution.

Erm...thats not correct. They will all normalize to the same voltage as its dc not ac Solar stations ive worked on and the string voltage of each array was brought up when wired in parrell. No magic tricks! Highest voltage took prefence and this would do same

The network total power is pretty cool. How come no Battery sense? that would give you a 2nd. low temp disconnect? I am sure the battery has this feature, does the smart shunt also have a temp sensor? I am in the process of building a 280ah 12v battery box from hell. It will have two internal victron 75/15's and one external one. along with a 25amp victron ac charger, and battery sense. I can't wait to watch everything play together. My truck has 200watts (to be rewired in series thanks to another one of your videos) and a 150w 36v folding, and a 100watt folding panel 450watts total. the different voltages and locations are why I need three charge controllers. Keep up the videos you are on a roll. By box will have temp controlled heating and cooling that is why I want the 2 controllers mounted internally. That way they can move with the battery box if i remove it from the truck, If my dual fans can't cool it enough I will simply remove the lid. Way too much info I know but it gives everyone ideas about how other people use stuff.

Thanks for a very informative video and one that I hope will prove very useful. A question if I may. My campervan is very small and I can only fit 1 x 100w solar panel on the roof. As such I was thinking of using a bluetti 200w solar blanket as the second panel when needed. Are there any obvious downsides to this using your setup - especially as the solar blanket will not be connected at all times? Many thanks.

Hello Nate, Just the info I've been looking for. Just one thing I haven't found an answer to with the Smart Solar VE-CAN, With the VE-CAN and the VE-Direct connection to the CCGX can you use either the VE-CAN or the VE-Direct or must both be connected. Currently I am only able to view todays data on the CCGX. There is no 30 day History. I haven't checked the bit rate yet ,I think that should be set at 250 bit/s

Hi Nate and Steph. Thanks for all your videos. People are really benefiting from your work, me included. In this video, your diagram shows 50A breakers for your solar disconnect. However, in your 1 hr+ full tutorial, AND what you sell in the shop, you have a non breaker solar disconnect. Why the change? Is there no longer a concern from a short on the solar panel side of the electrical system?
@EXPLORISTlife
@EXPLORISTlife 2 года назад
The breaker was never acting as a breaker. The breaker was only ever acting as a disconnect.
@turnpike420
@turnpike420 2 года назад
@@EXPLORISTlife fair enough. Thanks! I agree there must be something in line to stop the flow of power from the panels. Can we presume you have no concerns of shorting from the solar panels therefore no breaker? Obviously one could calculate the power from their panels and put an appropriate breaker in line if desired… thanks again!

@@EXPLORISTlife for those who might read this thread, I immediately applied what I learned. I have 2 solar arrays each independently in parallel: 2 x 100W; short circuit current 5.39A; max series fuse rating 15A; 10.78A < 15A therefore no fuse. 2 x 200W; short circuit current 9.66A; max series fuse rating 15A; 19.32A > 15A so I need a 15A in-line fuse on the + string before the Y combiner. I hope I applied this correctly! 🙌🏻

In your narration of the video you show the "network total power" line item when you only have two controllers on the network. I have three victron smart solar controllers all three on the victron ve Network yet I don't get the "network total power" line item in the display. Are you actually showing us with just the two controllers or is your smart shunt or some other device already connected to the network allowing that to show? Thanks PS: nice to see somebody else using crimped ferrules I'll have to look back through your other videos to see what tool you're using I still haven't found a ferrule crimping tool that I like

I am looking at an array of 6 400W panels. They have Voc of 50.4V and max current of 9.74A. I am going to have a 24V battery bank, which means that the max current to the batteries is upwards of 100+ amps. If voltage is the main determiner of price for an MPPT, why not always just put the panels in parallel to minimize voltage? Is there also a rating on MPPT controllers for max input amps? And why do I not see charge controllers with higher amp rating than volts? It seems the best option for me would be a 50V\100A MPPT, at a minimum. What am I missing? I may be looking for some consulting but was just wondering about minimizing the cost of the charge controller I will need. Thanks, and great videos. I especially like that they are small, bite size videos that I can watch several of at a time and then come back later to continue, rather than stopping a video and coming back later to figure out where I left off.
