What’s the greatest compliment a reader can pay your novel?
They say they couldn’t put your book down.
It was a page-turner.
My eyes were glued to the page.
Yup.
How do we achieve this effect?
Is there a magical formula we can copy?
Yes, I think so.
Of course there are numerous elements to a great story.
Plot, character, villains, storytelling, ‘show don’t tell’…
But also there is one simple trick that anyone can use to glue the reader’s eyes to the page.
It has to do with the difference between surprise and suspense.
Watch the video to learn the secret.

Great idea, Malcolm, to reveal the whodunnit early on. I think I’ll do that in my prologue.

Why not! If it doesn't work, just delete the prologue :)

A really good talk. If we want the reader to care what happens to a character they have to know what's at stake for the character. In the Realm of Senses is a brilliant film, but maybe not ideal for a date!

Thanks Colin. You are right, not ideal for a first date which is why ultimately I believed her when she said she had no idea. Because no one would dream of taking someone on a first date to see such a film. I often wonder about the reverse situation where a man takes his new girlfriend to see it not knowing what the film is about. Imagine the horror in both their minds! She would no doubt think this bloke is a psycho-killer! And he would be thinking, Oh God she thinks I spend all my time watching porn!

@@TheOxfordWriter Robert De Niro's character tried something similar in Taxi Driver, it didn't work out very well(and he was a little bit of a psycho)

Thanks! It’s a very new channel so it’s going to take a while. In the meantime, the process reminds me of the quote: Publishing a volume of verse is like dropping a rose petal down the Grand Canyon and waiting for the echo-Don Maquis

This is a wonderful post. I really got a lot out of this one. I never really pondered the difference between surprise and suspense, which kind of blows me away because it's so obvious.

Yes it's good to see Hitchcock saying the 'unsayable', namely that whodunnits are a bit cerebral and dull
