Cheers Harry, it's very easy to overcomplicate the process of query-letter writing, and this was very succinct and clear. And you didn't do what so many others do and say 'It's so hard or too much trouble, but you have to do it'. I find writing letter writing helps shape the book in the edit, and I write one once I've finished the first draft of the book and tweak it over the months or years it takes to edit the book.

Harry, thank you. My manuscript has been great-going-on-excellent for quite some time now, but so far my covering letter has been quite, quite poor. This was very helpful and you come across as charming and down to earth. Thank you. Wish me luck...

This is really very useful. I live in Australia, and am writing a novel that has global appeal - I am thinking it would be foolish to publish it in Australia first if I don't have to, simply because of the small population. Is there any rule of thumb on, say, writing to literary agents in the UK to get it published there?

This is a quite stupid question - is a sound bite literally a sound clip? My publisher requests one with my submission.

It's a puzzle to me. If you haven't the skill to write a pertinant, informative, and intelligent query letter, which from the first sentence informs, intrigues and impresses that literary agent so that he wants to see more....Why on earth would you think yourself capable of writing a novel that people would buy?

so what if all I can find is a agency name and no specific agent name?
