This dude legit looks like he'd eat raw meat on stage of a hardcore band and hes making synth music that could help a baby fall asleep and calm one down. How
Haha awesome!!! Dank je Bart, I'm so happy to hear my riff is living in your head, it loves it in there haha! Hope all's well in Rijswijk, and that you're enjoying some beautiful autumn running :)
This was so helpful! Often times, I would think that writing riffs or melodies just involved dumb luck in playing random notes, but this changed it so much for me. Thank you so much!!!
Hey thanks so much Che, we're thrilled that this vid was so helpful to you! A warm welcome to our Hack Music Theory community, and we hope to see you again soon for more theory hacks! Until next time, have a wonderful week :)
Aww thanks so much Bradley, happy to hear you enjoyed our free book, and a warm welcome to the Hack Music Theory community! What kind of music do you make? Take care, and we hope to see you again soon for more theory hacks :)
Thankyou so much!!!! I knew that there was a “second melody” in a ton of songs but never knew what it was called or how to make it in my songs. I’ve literally been looking for an explanation of this for a month or more. Without this video, I’d be aimlessly trying to write a second melody on top of mine. Thanks again!
Aw thanks for watching and connecting, ToTheThird, it always makes us happy to know that our hacks are helping musicians! We're pumped to welcome you into our Hack Music Theory revolution! Until next time, take care and happy songwriting, Kate :)
Dear , Kate and Ray. fortunately for all of us, seekers of musical truths, the speed at which you produce beautiful musical contents, exceeds our ability to process, however, that is the sign of this time. speed, and given the level of commitment of all who aspire to be the new creators. only we have ... CREATE NEW MUSIC !!! let's continue . all my love and thanks Jess
Happy to help, Jamie, and a warm welcome to the Hack Music Theory community! What kind of music do you make? Take care, and we hope to see you again soon for more theory hacks :) ps. we like your cat pic!

@@HackMusicTheory thanks! as a songwriter i'm trying out all the different genres and i promised to write a riff for a rock song i'm cowriting currently, hope your channel will help me🤞
Thanks for sharing, zu blus, and apologies for my late reply! We absolutely encourage music makers to explore different genres as it helps with inspiration and creativity! We did a video that might spark some thoughts, called "The Truth About Genres": ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Mr5iWrVIX0c.html. We really appreciate you being here, and are cheering you on in your music making journey! Have a great day :) Kate
Oooo l love that riff in the song! And actually noticed that last note dropping back to a B before. ..and now understand why! Excellent tutorial as always! Thanks so much, Tim
i just made my first beat with these 5 hacks and it immediately turned out way better and more aimed than ever before :D apparently it turned out as a trap beat again which i was trying to move away from but its super sweet! Thanks so much
Hey thanks so much DarTer, and a warm welcome to the Hack Music Theory community! What kind of music do you make? Take care, and we hope to see you again soon for more theory hacks :)

I hope Ray & Kate have got a special Halloween video planned. Perhaps explaining/playing around with minor and diminished chords and the locrian scale. You could really go to town with fancy Halloween outfits too. I'm sure you'd have a lot of fun!
You know us well djdrwatson! No fancy outfits... but we're sure having a lot of fun putting together this week's Halloween special! Can't wait to show it to you!
Happy to hear it Calvin, and a warm welcome to the Hack Music Theory community! What kind of music do you make? Take care, and we hope to see you again soon for more theory hacks :)
@@HackMusicTheory Nice to get a reply! I'm producing plenty of music: Deep Dubstep, Future-Garage and High-Tech Minimal are my favorites. I haven't released anything, yet. But HEY: I'll get only a single chance to make a FIRST IMPRESSION. Thats why I keep on learning until I feel like I can really identify with my sound. I'm very creative and would call me an expert at mixing and so on. But Arranging a whole song is what I struggle with: Having a matching intro for the first verse which leads into the further parts and so on. I technically know how to do so, but realizing the theory on ideas that I reaaaaaaally like is the hardest thing to do to me atm. Creativity vs technicality (if that's even a word haha). Maybe u have a tip for that. I'll keep on practicing everyday until I've reached my goals. Music is my passion. 🌐🔥♥️ Greets from Germany 🇩🇪
If u want u some examples: Boris Brejcha - I Take It Smart Truth - Direct Blow (the chords) Trentemøller - moan (Enigma Dubz Remix) Thats what I'm interested in.. very emotional ans deep stuff
Awesome, thanks for sharing, Calvin, your passion and love for music really shines through and we love it!! From the sounds of it, I think you would really dig our online Apprenticeship course. It's 17 hours of unedited video that captures every step of the songwriting process, from blank screen to finished song. We also dive deep into the topic of structuring and arranging songs, which we don't cover here on RU-vid. And, it's all taught from a practical and creative perspective. If this sounds like it would be helpful to you, then you can find out more here: HackMusicTheory.com/Courses. We really appreciate you being here, Calvin, and we're cheering you on in your music making journey! Have a great week, and we hope to see you back here in the comments soon :)
I'm really glad that you are playing the riff at the end of each hack! Compared to some of your other videos (mostly the older ones), you don't play it and just go to the next hack. This is very helpful for me because I'm a guitarist and I don't imagine notes written in a timescale so I have to hear the changes of the notes to fully understand how it affects the riff.
We're really happy you enjoyed our video, YuvieKai! Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment, we're deeply grateful to you. Until next time, happy songwriting! Kate :)
We're really happy you enjoyed our video, Jay! Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment, we're deeply grateful to you. Until next time, happy songwriting! Kate :)

Haha the stakes are higher than ever now, cos our patrons over on Patreon get early access to our RU-vid videos :) How's things on your side my friend?
Goooood stuff dude, glad to hear you're immersed in music, there's simply no better way to spend our time, right? Anyhoo, have a great gig on Saturday, and I look forward to our weekly catch up on next Thursday's video :)
Hey Conor, great to hear from you! We're super pumped that you're learning lots, we're honoured to be helping fellow musicians. What kind of music do you make? Hope you're having a lovely weekend. Until next time, take care and happy songwriting! Kate :)
Technically speaking, none right now but hopefully soon it'll be lots thanks to you guys! I play guitar so anything from folky acoustic to heavy riffy stuff. Although I think I'll be investing in a keybnoard/piano soon after learning so much theory from you :D
Hi Conor, thanks so much for sharing! We're super pumped that you're going to dive into making your own music, we're cheering you on! Keyboards are awesome for visualizing theory, plus they help keep our fingers dexterous and nimble! Speaking of heavy riffs, I think you'll really dig next weeks Halloween special...it's based on a riff from Ray's upcoming metal single. We're getting super excited for the reveal! By the way, where are you based? Until next time, take care! Kate :)
Well, hello to you in Dublin! We'll look forward to hearing what you think of the video this week then :) Hope you've had a really great weekend Conor! Take care, Kate :)
I love all your videos, they are so informative! I have a question, not that it matters but I'm really curious about what virtual instruments you guys use :)
Hey hey Ricardo, thank you sincerely for taking the time to watch our video and connect, we truly appreciate it! We use Native Instruments Massive for our synths (not just a clever name haha!): www.native-instruments.com/en/products/komplete/synths/massive. And the bass guitar we use is: www.native-instruments.com/en/products/komplete/guitar/scarbee-jay-bass. The piano we use, which is absolutely gorgeous and we highly recommend it, is: www.native-instruments.com/en/products/komplete/keys/the-grandeur. What software is that if be really awesome to know I'm trynna to learn to structure storngs and start layering stuff instead of just playing random riffs that sound alright together
Hey Leon, glad to hear you dig the video. Thanks for stopping by, and welcome to the Hack Music Theory community! By the way, if you haven't already, please help yourself to our free book at: hackmusictheory.com/books
Excellent! May I ask, with regard to #5 Harmony... you add the A above the C (9 steps)... is there theory behind that choice or were you simply going for a high note to catch the ear? Thanks!
Thank you so much for this video. Immensely helpful! I'm a novice who has pretended at guitar for years and have recently just began formal theory classes and your video has given me quite a bit to think about.

Here's the page: hackmusictheory.com/apprenticeship Hope that helps, and thanks again for being here :)

@@HackMusicTheory thank you for that answer... I have not tried that one. Does it require a midi controller of some type? Or, can you use the pc keyboard? I think this video is going to be really really helpful for me now, and again and again later on... Thx
Hi Jake, thanks so much for watching and connecting! We use Reaper and are big fans of the software and the company for so many reasons! Hi Dan, thanks so much for watching and connecting! We use Reaper and are big fans of the software. We hope to see you again soon for more theory hacks! Until then, have a wonderful weekend :)
Cool , I’m starting to get the idea of the syncopation and offbeats now I think. The offbeats where you can syncopate are the ‘and’ in 8th note bars . If you are dealing with 16th notes I’m guessing the same ‘and’ and the ‘a’ could you also use the ‘e’ in One -e- and -a- two -e- counting 16ths . It gets confusing . Although I’m thinking anything but the 1 and 3 are offbeats so can be used to syncopate. 1 belongs kick and 3 is owned by the snare in rock and pop , . I’ve got some drum programming books to read anyway lol 😂
Ray you know what kind of a lesson I'd like to see? One about fitting song parts together, like if you use four chords in your chorus, how many chords would you like to have in your verses, how to modulate between parts of the song so that it sounds deliberate, etc.
Hey Pakanahymni, great to hear from you! Because transitioning between different parts of a song can only be taught in the context of a whole song, it's a far more time-consuming topic, and therefore the video would be way too long (analytics show that people don't watch long videos on RU-vid). This is exactly why we launched our online apprenticeship program. In it, our apprentices watch behind-the-scenes videos from our studio sessions where we write songs from start to finish, and teach all the theory along the way. They gain insights into every step of the songwriting process and learn our most advanced hacks, including how to transition seamlessly between sections. We also do live Q&A sessions every month to answer questions about the process. If this sounds good to you, then you can find out more and sign up to our apprenticeship program over on Patreon, here: www.Patreon.com/RevolutionHarmony. We'd love to see you behind the scenes! Thanks again for your interest in Hack Music Theory, and until next time, take care and happy songwriting!
Hey thanks Matthew, it always makes us happy to know that our hacks are helping musicians! What kind of music do you make? We hope to see you around soon for more theory hacks, until then, take care :)
Hey Matthew, thanks so much for sharing :) We're super sorry to hear you're struggling though, and we'd love to point you in the direction of some of the free resources we've created. As a starting point, if you haven't already, may I suggest that you check out our free music theory book, '12 Music Theory Hacks to Learn Scales and Chords'? It's a refresher of the basics, and in 30 minutes you'll have a super solid music theory foundation. You can download it from our website: HackMusicTheory.com/Books. Next, I would suggest having a watch through our Step-by-Step Starter Guide playlist. It'll give you an overview of how to create a section from the ground up! ru-vid.com/group/PLgYcaQlDpHN5GZwnfDVwRmx-WHhJvdtMf Lastly, as inspiration for creating original melodies, may I recommend having a look through our Hack Melody playlist, here: ru-vid.com/group/PLgYcaQlDpHN5-tLZyRc33FJfmsoU5WBjQ We hope these help, Matthew, and please know that we're cheering you on 100% in your music-making journey!
If I want to apply this to a polyrythmic riff (let's say 7:4) can I also put the harmony notes in the strong 4/4 beat like u do here or would it sound awkward?
Aw thanks for watching and connecting, ReAKTIV, it always makes us happy to know that our hacks are helping musicians! Until next time take care and happy songwriting! Kate :)
