What are your thoughts on Envy?

I think Envy should've been renamed to Admiration, or Desire. Those traits would've been much more fitting with her personality in my mind, since whenever she's driving, Riley never comes off as envious. Moreso it was Riley admiring Val's hair, desiring knowledge in the coach's journal, desiring to be popular, etc. Then with Admiration mixed with Anger would you get a true envious memory

Additionally, Envy is the one who encourages Riley to sneak into Coach Roberts' Red Notebook. When Anxiety even questions if they were "pushing her too far", Envy was the one to redirect Anxiety's attention onto the notebook in drive of trying to make Riley "better" than who she was originally. So Envy may have had a bigger purpose than we were letting her off the hook earlier.

I love the way Envy is portrayed in the film, and I think her character deserves more credit for her role in events. Not only is it nice to have such an atypical (and adorable) portrayal of this vice, but she really does hold a lot of responsibility in Anxiety spiraling as badly and quickly as she does by never challenging her in anything. In the rare moments where Anxiety shows some doubt, Envy pushes her on ahead with her bad ideas.

The jar is called “bottling up your emotions” and it’s what most kids do.

Could you do Riley after you finish covering the new emotions? I'd love to hear your thoughts on her since she's more fleshed out on the external side of things.

I saw a lot of people claiming that the movie would have been the same without Envy, but multiple times in it she steers Anxiety in the wrong way and reinforces her point of view. She was quite important in the end with the way events unfolded.

I wish they fleshed her out more. Envy had the potential to instigate Anxiety’s plan. Riley could have felt envious of how good Val is, rather than only admiring her. And she could have been envious toward her friends who are going to the same school without her, thus motivating her to make new friends and get better at hockey

Although I like all the emotions (it’s hard for me to choose which one is my favorite) I really really like Envy and how she was portrayed in the movie. And she’s so small compared to the others too, it’s adorable and I love her design!

I went and rewatched Inside Out 2 in the theatre just a day ago, and I really have noticed a lot of things that I didn’t notice or pay attention to last time. I really recommend rewatching it in theatres. And I can't wait for it to go on Disney+.

You know what I love about Anxiety and Envy’s dynamic? The first day they’re at the console and Anxiety lets Envy take over and not hog the controls all to herself, even asking/listening to Envy’s suggestions on how they could help Riley. Which is a CONTRAST to how Joy and Sadness began their first day and so forth in the first movie. Which is why I like IO2 way more than the first one. And also because I enjoyed Joy getting dragged, especially when Ennui calls her “old-fashioned”.

Also Envy pushed Riley to get the notebook, as when she got up Anxiety tried but couldn’t push her to get up and sneak into the coaches office and even asked “are we pushing her to hard?”, BUT it was Envy who managed to get her up and sneak into that office

Envy is my personal favorite!!! She is small, charismatic and the baby of all the emotions. I am the baby of four brothers. My oldest brother Andre is 6 foot 5, my second oldest is Laurence was 6 foot 3 and my third oldest brother was 6 foot 1. I came out at 5 foot 8, so you can understand why I was so "envious" of my brothers growing up. Although she is small, Envy is an emotion that knows exactly what she wants and how to get it. In Riley's case, Envy protects Riley from social suicide and pushes herself through the crowd, even though she is the smallest she has bigger ideas!!! Her constant thirst for acceptance and group inclusion makes her a perfect ally for Anxiety. I connected with her the most!!!! And sidenote, Envy is the only character with 8 fingers, because she is always envious everyone else has more fingers than her. 💙

Envy, a lot of people complained that she didn't feel "envious" enough, but that's because whenever they think of envy they imagine specifically NEGATIVE/MALICIOUS envy, which is when you resent others and try to bring them down to your level, POSITIVE/BENIGN envy drives us to self-improvement, to emulate others, chase after what we don't have, to elevate ourselves to the level of those we envy, but that's still envy because it is still born out of an upward social comparison and a desire for what others have, I would even argue that envy (not just generic desire) is the basis of ambition, after all, what does "being successful" means if not making ourselves as ENVIABLE as possible? people have suggested that Envy should have been renamed Desire but unlike Envy, there is no justification as to why Desire would only show up now with puberty, Anxiety is only showing up now because children are generally bad at thinking long-term, now that Riley can better project forward towards the future Anxiety can show up, as for the other 3, they all have roles tied to the regulation of social status, which would be significantly more relevant now that Riley is entering high school, Ennui conceals other emotions when doing so would be inappropriate, Embarrassment makes us aware when our own status has been diminished, and as I explained above, Envy makes us aware of those with higher social status, and depending on how is channeled it can motivate us to either tear others down (negative) or lift ourselves up (positive)

Really enjoyed the videos on Anxiety, Embarrassment and Envy! Great breakdowns and analysis; Envy worked as an accomplice alongside Anxiety and that really shows how both can kinda go hand in hand influencing one another in real life too

I haven't gone to see this movie a second time but from my initial viewing I understood Envy as an active but ignorant enabler because of her envy, I never thought her motives would've been wanting full control but it does kinda make sense when she's got angst over Anxiety telling her "next time" when building Riley's new sense of self.

I think it be cool if the third movie talked about anger and envy, envy starts feeding into anger and then they both become a little out of control, but they’re good. They just have the same issue the anxiety and sadness had at first.

Envy is just enabling Anxiety throughout the whole movie

I keep seeing comments about how Envy being her name is inaccurate (which isn’t correct) and that she should be Admiration or something. So I would like to clarify something. Remember, the creators did consult actual psychologists when making this. So in actual psychology, there are two types of envy: malicious and benign. We all know the former. But benign envy falls more under “admiring something so you want to do something, work for something, etc.” This also balances out the emotions a bit since Joy seems to be the only traditionally positive emotion in the cast.

I REALLY love how the new emotions sorta function as “anxiety enableres” all of Them have a good reason (from the standpoint of what emotion they represent) to not question anxieties plan. Embarrasment chooses to follow anxiety because she plans so far Ahead that everything is excpected, and Will decrease the chance of something unexpected happening that could embarras Riley, and embarrasment doesnt want to be embarrasted. And ennui really doesnt Care what emotion is in charge, since no matter who is in charge, Boredom Will always happen, so Ennui doesnt need to Care who’s in control

Would have loved if this video went into specific examples of when envy was an ignorant accomplice. You had a great point about how envy is healing anxiety because she wants to be as good as anxiety and that was a great mind blown realisation for me. Would have loved to hear the examples like when envy wants to plant a belief or tried to guess what anxiety is going to say. They’re written off as jokes BUT speak to envy’s character and motivation. Especially during the end when Riley’s new sense of self is developed and you see envy starting to doubt anxiety’s plan for the first time. Would love to see more videos from you since you have such a unique editing style and personal voice! Your previous two inside out two videos were fantastic I think maybe this one needed a bit more work cause as it stands, it feels like ur talking in circles. When it go to the end of the video, I thought you just finished ur introduction. Not bad tho! You don’t have the movie on Disney plus yet to go back and analyse so I can’t blame u too much.

Envy typically has two sides Benign Envy- Wanting something because someone else has it. And Malicious Envy-using underhanded methods to obtain something someone has. With Envy in the current instalment of Inside Out she is mostly Benign but has moments where she does lean into the Malicious side of her emotion. So maybe the next instalment doesn't age Riley up by much, but rather she gains a new sibling which would interupt her life in various ways (crying every two hours, having to deal with diapers). This could cause Envy to step in as an antagonist because the baby sibling would need attention, but Envy might feel Riley deserves the attention to the point where she wants Riley to get rid of the sibling.

Thanks for this video. When I first saw the movie then reviews I disagreed with what they said about Envy because I saw similar things you mentioned. On another note, I like how her design has subtle red and purple. Showcasing how Envy can lead to Fear and Anger as well as how her base colour (I think teal...) is a mixture of blue and green, Sadness and Disgust. Very good colour design.

Hey bro, LOVE your videos. Glad I came across you. Another banger as always. I felt seen with your Inside Out and Turning Red comparison vid, mainly by the fact that you have a distaste for Turning Red just as I do. 😂😂😂 But also became you formed my individual thoughts into words. I had a question to ask YOU though! I have a theory. New Emotions Are Born From The Belief System. Do you think there's validity to that? Because there's no WAY all of those emotions had been there just chilling downstairs for all of Riley's life. Core emotions are basically always with you, the "Prime Five" are instilled into every human being from the time they are born and they come in when they are needed, but it never truly took them years to do so. That's something that bothered me. Envy said, "It took them 13 years to build the old one." Giving even more validity to the fact that they weren't there from the beginning because if that were true? Embaressment would have been there in the classroom scene after Riley cried in front of the whole class and Anxiety definitely wouldn't have just sat there while Riley's mind was literally deteriorating. Which bring me back tobmy theory. New emotions have to be born from beliefs because it's the only thing that makes sense. As we know, the memory orbs which have combinations of certain emotions come together and form belief strings and everybody was already saying how most of the new emotions are technically stars of being that can be brought on by fear and sadness. If you mix fear and sadness together? You get a lot of emotions but one of them would definitely be Anxiety. And to talk about the star of the video, Envy? She could have been born from the simple belief, "My friends have better bikes than I do." Or "My bike sucks" I wish I had a bike as cool as everyone else. Boom! Here comes Envy. What do you think?

Envy can grow within children aswell but that’s alright,the reason why she’s adorably small is because “envy grows” ,you feel small if you don’t have the needs and wants that others have and the same reasons can be said for embarrassment which makes you think that everybody is watching you and you feel like you stand out alot she’s ignorant true and the main reason for alot of this drama that happened in the nostalgic masterpiece of a film Also ennui isn’t a boy cmon man the voice says it all alright I’ll close this weird essay now but thank you so much man and I’m really happy for your subs and views,you just got another subscriber :)

Thinking about… not much really well it’s about ennui witch can be good bad and well megh if I where to explain it. It a state of being where you kinda don’t feel much witch has benefits but also negatives obviously but it can go as far as you deeply thinking about things in a way like- is feeling a lack of is still feeling because to much is bad? Ennui can be complex to simple at times as the emotion is.

Isn't Ennui a girl? I always thought Ennui was a girl. Don't get me wrong though, I don't assume every emotion is feminine - Anger, Fear, and Embarrassment all seem to be guys rather than girls - but then that also just poses another curiosity, because the emotions of everybody else in each movie so far have shared both their gender and any defining traits with their host, and it makes me wonder if Riley is meant to have DID or something similar. She's also the only character to have her emotions go off script - happiness getting sadness or angriness, sadness getting fearful or joyous, anger getting disgusted or fearful, etc.
