@@ChemEngWeekly If you don’t mind, is there anything you would recommend to do before writing personal statements?. like read specific books or do certain courses etc. Thanks
@ChemEngWeekly
@ChemEngWeekly 2 года назад
I would wholly recommend trying to read books about engineering in general because there are very few about ChemE in terms of personal statement material explicitly. In terms of other books, try looking for module related books, like the 4 laws of the universe by Peter Atkins for thermodynamics, the periodic kingdom for the chemistry modules (look more at the organic side of the book) and also some books on fluid mechanics. You could also look for a corresponding course on futurelearn that could help- try searching chemical Engineering and see what is suggested, because they will often overlap wit other subjects. I hope this helps, and if you have any more questions, please do reach out!

could you talk about things you’ve done before year 12 in secondary school? like being a science ambassador and other things related to stem?
@ChemEngWeekly
@ChemEngWeekly Год назад
Hey there! Yes you could, absolutely! Although it would be more sensible to limit the number of things you talk about that you did 2 or more years ago- you want to show you are interested in ChemEng and science/engineering so you are constantly trying to explore your interest. Hope this helps!

Do you by any chance have advice on personal statements for international students?
@ChemEngWeekly
@ChemEngWeekly Год назад
Hey there! Sure, so all the same things apply as in this video, I have seen some students add in why they particularly want to study in the UK for their degree, but this is not needed at all- the method for judging personal statements is the same, regardless if the student is international or home. I hope this helps, and any further questions do not hesitate to ask! 👍

I'm currently studying bio chem maths and Turkish, do you think my application would be considered any differently compared to someone studying maths, further maths, chemistry and physics purely based off of subject choices and not anything else?
@ChemEngWeekly
@ChemEngWeekly Год назад
Hey there! I don’t think it would, since the minimum requirement to be studying chemistry and maths is more than satisfied with you choices, and the biology is an added bonus, so you can still put in a very competitive application. It definitely depends on other things like predicted grades too, but the subjects are a good fit for sure! Hope this helps 👍

If i were to put that my interest in chemical engineering is pharmaceutical manufacturing and explain why with my experience working in pharmacies would that work and be successful? (also link articles and books read)
@ChemEngWeekly
@ChemEngWeekly Год назад
That would be very beneficial absolutely! It would show you are passionate about Chemical Engineering since you have a target industry you want to work in and ChemEng can get you there- the best way to approach this would be to explain how your experience at working in pharmacies has led to you becoming more interested in pharmaceutical manufacturing and thus ChemEng since the degree can lead very nicely into this field. Hope this helps! 👍

Hey, great video! I was wondering what your thoughts were on including COVID stuff in my ps. Obviously I don’t know enough so I wanted to get a professional opinion, in the sense that would this be related to chem Eng (the mass production of valves, vaccines and etc).I read an article about how chem engineers in Italy were able to quickly make valves during the the pandemic. I talked about how I’m fascinated with how the production of this equipment saved many lives.
@ChemEngWeekly
@ChemEngWeekly Год назад
Thank you! And with respect to your question, by all means you can talk about COVID and the pandemic; one of the best personal statements I have read was entirely about the production of vaccines and world-scale supply facilitated by chemical engineers. I hope this helps, and any further questions, do not hesitate to ask 👍

@@ChemEngWeekly Thank you so much! I was worried that uni’s would see that and think why I haven’t I gone for something like Biomedicine or Biotechnology, so thanks for clearing that up
@ChemEngWeekly
@ChemEngWeekly Год назад
@@kn7899 no worries at all, as long as it is relevant to chemical engineering at some point, you can focus on it in your personal statement, because it takes research to discover the links of industry and ChemEng 👍
@kn7899
@kn7899 Год назад
@@ChemEngWeekly do you know if most uni courses cover vaccines or do you have any experience with learning this whilst you were at uni
@ChemEngWeekly
@ChemEngWeekly Год назад
@@kn7899 so with respect to vaccines, it is taught as part of wider set of modules you take for pharmaceutical engineering which are usually taken in the third or fourth years. Most ChemEng courses do offer this specialisation, but sometimes it is subject to attainment within your degree. 👍

Would you say that doing a project such as learning to code and making an app be something worth doing for chemical engineering personal statement or similar related project?
@ChemEngWeekly
@ChemEngWeekly Год назад
I think with respect to ChemEng specifically, it would not be wholly relevant unless the app does something to do with Chemical Engineering or uses a coding language (eg matlab) that is often taught in the university degree. It would be more worth doing something like a CREST silver or gold award Engineering project as this would boost the extracurriculars better. Hope this helps!

could you please recommend some books to include for personal statement?
@ChemEngWeekly
@ChemEngWeekly 2 года назад
Yes of course! Peter Atkins the 4 laws of the universe is a good one, as are periodic tales by Hugh Aldersey Williams. In general, any books surrounding engineering more generally or wider chemistry aspects would be useful, as it is an engineering degree with elements of chemistry in it. A good online book to read for energy related discussion is www.withouthotair.com/ , but of course you could always read something more geared towards which industry interested you more. A simple search on, for example, pharmaceutical engineering books would come up with things that maybe useful for you if this is something you want to talk about. I hope this helps, and any further help do not hesitate to ask!

I find it weird that a university would waste time reading these at all. I have 2 degrees from 2 Canadian universities: 1 in pure Chemistry & 1 in Chemical Engineering and in both cases the only things I had to send were an application form and arrange for my junior College and high school to send my grades sheets directly to the universities I was applying to. I can't see any use for a university to demand these blabbering ''UCAS'' letters. However, if forced to write one, the best advice you gave in my opinion was to avoid waffling at all cost. Make it short and sweet. Go straight to your interest in general sciences that you developed in high school, followed by your more recently developed, interests in Chemistry and technology specifically.
