It's not about the grip - it's about the pressure you apply as you write. Harder strokes produce thicker lines, while softer touches makes thinner lines. Speed can also help too. Writing on the side of your nib can damage the tines. Sure, for a Lamy, this isn't an issue - Lamy nibs are cheap and easily replaceable. Other nibs, however, can be much harder to replace if they are damaged. Just get a calligraphy pen which is designed for it rather than risk damaging your fountain pen.

You can see the way they're scraping the paper along. That's a great way to break a nib. Literally any other video on youtube on the subject explains why it's a bad idea.

I'm sorry, but my heart skipped a beat and I was in horror when you held and pressed the pen in 90 degrees. That will break the tines faaaar earlier than it's intended use age. Harder strokes produce thicker lines, not the angle you write. This is not a valid and a correct advice for using a fountain pen. I stress again, this is NOT a valid and a correct advice for using a fountain pen. As much as a Lamy steel nib is super sturdy and strong, other fountain pens will fail and the nibs will crumble. I can't imagine someone who has little to no knowledge use a flexible 18ct gold nib in a 90 degree fashion, I will cry inside.

For anyone who sees this, I’m not sure that’s the best way to write with your fountain pen. Your standard grip seems a bit heavy, which can be fixed. However, rotating the nib and consistently writing like that may over time damage it. This includes ending up with misaligned tines you uneven pressure and springing the nib if you press too hard at some point. Please consider looking into a flexible nib or stub made for calligraphy, otherwise brush pens and dip pens with flex nibs might be worth a look. As a newbie I’ve made far worse mistakes though, have a permanently mauled cheap pen that I flexed when it shouldn’t have, it now writes but not as well as it likely should.
@elgabenedicta
@elgabenedicta 3 года назад
I agree. The main purpose of using a fountain pen (regular nib), well at least for me, is to not to have to press so much like when writing with ballpoint pens etc. I just let the weight of the pen give the pressure, then I just need to glide the nib on top of the paper to form the writing.

Nice tip, but that kind of pressure can easily wreck your nibs tines over time. It's not designed to recieve pressure on that angle. If you want to do this, make sure you do it with an unexpensive fountain pen, or extra nib.

I don't think this is the correct tool for this kind of job. Bending the tines like this will produce misalignment and you'll end up with a scratchy nib in normal position. I recommend you use a proper flex nib pen like noodlers or Pilot Falcon.

another one. yes your mind speak logic Writting like this is the equivalent of mistreating the nib, because the tines we're not designed or constructed to resist receiving pressure from that direction. then again her pen seems to be just fine 🤷🏻‍♂️ I would not do this with my Parker 75

That is extraordinary! I’ve never seen anyone else show this - I’m aware “reverse” writing aka using nib turned backwards (180 degrees) can be a thing to get really delicate fine line on many pens. But this is fascinating- will need to try it out and experiment! Not even sure why it works? Did you discover this or pick it up from a reference/ fellow penman?
@PowerfullPC
@PowerfullPC 3 года назад
This is poor practice. The way they are writing pushes the tine touching the paper out of alignment with the other tine, creating a larger surface area for ink to be applied. But this is strain on the nib in a way it was never designed to handle. Reverse writing and normal writing are because the slit makes contact with the paper and allows capillary action to have ink flow. Writing sideways shouldn't work, but if you put pressure you can push the bottom tine out of the way. Again, not recommended, it can damage a nib over time. Edit: except for the very unusual Sailor Trident fountain pen, you will (as far as I'm aware) never find a nib designed to write this way. Flexible nibs are designed to bend with pressure on down strokes, so can give line variation, but are very niche. A Lamy Safari does *not* have a flex nib. Unless a nib is designed for flex, trying to flex it can spring the nib, causing issues with flow (and even breaking the nib in worst cases)

That's because you should NEVER attempt to write with a fountain pen in this position. It can and will eventually damage your tines and your pen will be F'd. Keep it to yourselves, you all know how it goes, if you don't have anything nice to say.... It this persons pens and time and video, and the cursive is beautiful and functional. Very nice for everyday writing. It is more important than ever to celebrate and encourage one another and above all else, stay positive! Thank you for the wonderful video I look forward to trying a bit of that style when I get home.

Hello - do you have a printable page with both lower case and capitals so we can use as a reference? Or a page for each? Thanks in advance!

I assume you must be double jointed because there is no way my index finger can bend back to such a funky angle. Unless it's because you've done a lot of calligraphy? In either case, no way can I replicate that grip 😂
@TheNormalHandwriting

My fingers are natually "bended" like that so it looks like I put a lot of pressure to bend it 😂.

@@TheNormalHandwritingAh I see, I've been experimenting with altering my grip in order to maybe improve my handwriting, but any grip where I bend back my index finger just ends up hurting it. So for now I'll just keep writing with a bridge bent grip, which means that I write more with my fingers which I find makes my letters inconsistent at times. However this lady however says its the best grip so idk ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XRHxqfNSQ54.html

@@jossecoupe446 It definitely looks comfortable. I tried once or twice but could not write properly (obviously it's a real challenge and takes a lot of time to change the way of pen grip. It's not impossible though). So I end up holding the way I have been doing. I don't find it troublesome though, as I have been writing 10 pages of final exam with no issue 😂

@@TheNormalHandwriting Well I used to write with a whole of four fingers surrounding the pen but changed it when I discovered fountain pens. Was definitely a hassle but pretty doable and incredibly worth it, I shudder at the memories of my handwriting before the change 😂

The grip is not required but the way of how you write and your handwriting is required. The speed helps you to make different lines when turning the nib of it. Calligraphy means decorative and fountain pen is decorative but not very much. The calligraphy depends on of how much you have put the ink in the pen. The more the ink is in the pen, the better and smooth handwriting it will be when writing with it. When you will turn the nib, the ink is not going to change because if you haven't changed ink, it can't automatically change it. When you turn the nib, the style of handwriting would be changed when writing. You can turn the nib of it and write two different styles to check which one is more better and accurate and you can figure out of how much you need to turn the nib. It's about the power of the pressure because when you keep the pen on the book for the very long time and because of that, it loses much ink and has lots of pressure into it when holding it for the very long time. To avoid that, just the ink of it and don't press it too hard and when the writing is done, don't keep pressing it but you need to move on the next handwriting otherwise the ink will just waste writing a small or large letter. Hope this guide works and keep repeating this process every time when writing with the fountain pen.

I'm sorry. You're just asking for that nib to get damaged. I'm much more concerned about the nib than calligraphy.

The upward strokes are not good when writing because when you write using upward strokes, the pen is not going to effect it's ink because you are sliding it upwards and that makes it more difficult to write but when you use downward strokes, it more better because you are sliding the pen downwards and the pen will effect it's ink more dark and better.
