We recorded this footage almost exactly one year ago. My voice in these clips is so gravely (just like it is now) because it was right after San Diego Comic-Con and I'd been doing interviews and signings for a week straight. :D

Really great information here that can be applied to any part of the industry people go after. Being a pleasant person that's trying their best will get you through way more doors than being an expert that nobody wants to be around.

Wow. Thankful. I'm always amazed by comic artist works. They are like Legends. I don't know where to start my drawing comics. Fear of failure. Self doubt. Etc. Is it possible to improve faster, I ask because I'm in my 50, can a man of 50 still get to be a comic artist? ❤❤🎉🎉😊😊😊
@phillipnunes8568
@phillipnunes8568 Год назад
Fear and doubt is the habit you must shake. Tell yourself that others have reached their dreams and they validate that you can too! I have seen guys in their 60's (even one gentleman who had survived polio) improve leaps and bounds because of their lack of fear. They are an inspiration! Do it for you and from the heart without considering potential criticism and nothing will stop you from your dream. You can absolutely do it. Don't let YOU stop you from your dream!

Absolutely! One of the things that came up during our SDCC panel for the course was how long it can take for some people to break in. Everyone's journey is different and making it "late" is totally doable!!

Unrelated question to this vid. How do you achieve darker shades without pressing the pencil too hard? All the time when I draw i see the lines of other drawings on the other sides of pages. It's quite unflattering.
@hobgob321
@hobgob321 Год назад
Get a set of drawing pencils. I use an hb,4b and 6b for most sketches. The 6b is great for applying lots of graphite to the paper without much effort or force. You can also practice line thickness and weight. If you want some lines to look thicker you can just draw over that line again. Both of these tips will help you achieve darker lines and shades without damaging your paper.

@@hobgob321 Thanks for the tip man! But I've practiced a hold in one of Proko's other vids and it's working really well for me. It's not compatible with writing though😅.

I like how clean the script looks. A clean script like that will definitely make the artist's job much easier because it really shows the script writer is thinking what stuff goes into what panel. If the script writer writes a bad script, then the illustrator will have to pick up on the slack and do the script-writing job. Then the illustrator will complain about it to the comic producer, and the comic producer who is financing everything will just fire the script writer. Of course, an author-illustrator will be a different case. I think it would be very helpful for author-illustrators of comics to have some unpaid teamwork experience. Know how to work in a team. Know how to collaborate. The teamwork skills will be helpful for a real paid job at Marvel.

Couldn't agree more. I think Jim adapted from Fred Van Lente. Look it up, it's do clean and easy to read.

No offence but the bar ain't very high for Marvel stories, not talking about the art and all just the stories

We’re at the point in history where you’re just gonna have to sift through trash in order to find a diamond. Either work to find good art and stop complaining, cause you’ll find it, or just work on writing your own stories. I’m sure if you feel this way you surely have a talent for it right?

@@thebikeman having such a big portion of the video dedicated to stories when the "story" is marvel garbage is kinda pointless is all I'm saying.

It's comic books, not Hemingway. Also Marvel isn't Manga either with a 300+ chapter single narrative story written and drawn by a single dude. Yes, the characters have their pre-established canons but different writers come in and out to write the stories for these characters. Also not every comic book writer is Stan Lee or Alan Moore. They are few and far between.
