Just another thing to add: Woodwinds are actually used very commonly in big film scores (Pirates Films, Maze Runner, Wonder Woman, Prometheus, even low winds in Inception, etc) but they are used more as blending tools, and not soloistically or necessarily for ornamentation. There’s also tons of huge woodwind ensembles in Interstellar. They are a fun batch of instruments that are actually really great for layering, and for the right moments, have a really great ability to add something rich if you put them on the surface! :)
@AlexMoukala
@AlexMoukala 6 лет назад
Ashton Gleckman for sure! Their precise sound is exactly what makes them perfect as layering agents, I show examples of that in the second half of the video. I think we give them less credit than they deserve, but once you try them and see the effect, there's no coming back.

The Woodwinds have always been my favorites! :) There's always something cheerful about them and when they are missing from a composition it's like someone forgot to put _the salt_ in the meal.

I guess that Beethoven or Mozart never got the memo about Woodwinds not being solo instruments and used more for blending tools, huh.

A great way to tell if your Winds part is to long is to sing the line, and if you run out of breath, the line is too long for the instrumentalist to play. Easy Cheesy.

Honestly this is way more than just a Woodwinds tutorial in my opinion, it's phenomenal. Alex mentions something very fundamental and important around 6 minute mark, what he mentions is instrumentation register, in this example he talks about the register of woodwinds instruments but this is true for a lot of instruments. There is a lot of instruments that can reach certain octaves, notes etc but they sound more realistic on some notes than others. This is really important to understand and this video is basically a shortcut if you pay attention.

Thanks for this awesome video, I've been struggling with writing for woodwinds. You are right that they are not a very prominent part of today's "epic" orchestral music, but they are a very powerful tool when it comes to layering them on top of other instruments or used in softer passages.

2:34 Ironically, I came here to learn more about woodwinds just because I watched a free masterclass by John Powell in the "Mixing With The Masters" site. He was breaking down also one of the tracks he made for How To Train Your Dragon 3, called "Third Date", which is the title of the masterclass as well. Btw, it has five videos between 15 and 25 minutes approximately. I recommend to everyone interested on learning some very interesting and meaningful lessons (that apply to career and to life too).

Yes, indeed, You can hear a lot of woodwinds section in japanese orchestral composition. Here another example : Donkey Kong Country played at the symphonic games orchestra 2 : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LGZtPht11pg.html . The woodwinds section can enrich the full song, like double some strings part, but also, they can bring a really new feeling, color, atmospher to the song. Emotional feeling like : mystery, slyness, fun, humor. But also you can create some transition effect like you did at 13:00. I think the high frequences that you are talking about is this kind of woodwinds does not create the "Overtone" that we can clearly hear with lower instrument.By the way alex, I signed up to evenant. And i just finish the course of Arn. Really intersting and helpful! Less is more!!
@peruibeloko

Thanks Alex for all the great content! But the explanation on "why higher notes cut through the mix better" is a bit hazy. Higher sounding instruments cut through the mix better partly because of why you have explained on the video (the amount of harmonics is smaller, thus, less harmonics to clash with other instruments), but the main reason is in physics: Higher frequencies naturally have more energy stored in them, not needing to have so much amplification in order to be heard. Fun fact, the same thing happens to light! Light of higher frequencies (or shorter wavelengths, your choosing) also has more energy associated with it (E = hf)

Alex you are quite wrong about long phrases for woodwinds. You can actually play long phrases depending on how much air it requires. Imagine lomg notes that should be played piano or mezzopiano, it can last lomger than a lomg note played fortissimo, and also you can catch breath without stopping playing, even if it is a very difficult technique, used mostly in contemporary music.

Hey Alex, a question to the evenant course: Is it as precise explained as you do it? And does it cover everything ? Like what you need in a template and stuff? I noticed you sometimes use the whole string essamble for chords and than layer cellos basses solo cello and 1st and 2nd violin over it I don’t know why you should layer cellos and basses on top + solo cello Just want to know if it‘s really in-depth since I‘m thinking to get this course for a few months now and invest in that Thanks a lot! Always love your tutorials and your quality posts on Instagram Greets from Germany!

For sure. I wouldn't recommend you something that's badly made or a scam. That course is the biggest and most-full resource I know and tried for when it comes to learning about writing Modern Orchestral Music. Arn's way of teaching is a bit different than mine since we had different backgrounds and skill levels (he's five times more talented than me) but it's still understandable and easily-relatable. I think, if you follow both my channel and his course, and practice what we preach, then you'll get two different perspectives on the same thing which will just make you grow much faster.

Alex Moukala I know you care about your audience and never would recommend something that’s not good, thanks for that really detailed information ! I‘m using FL and he is using Cubase but I think that won‘t be a problem since I‘m seeing your videos for making a template etc. :D

Boggles your mind that the scale run 20:48 sounds very legit and still seems impossible to perform on real instruments? That can be "easily" achieved with two instruments playing the scale run. Playing that (19:37) in perfect sync will be totally impossible and the result will end up very close to the duet sounding scale runs. Just try layering two simple scale run and offset the key notes in the piano roll just ever so slightly. Sounds almost identical to the 20:48? Mystery solved...

I use Clarinet mostly as a solo instrument since my best friend is a talented clarinet player. Before I met her I thought Clarinet was a very boring instrument. You can also think of woodwinds in a different non-classic way to spice up your compositions for example as we did in the beginning of this track. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LqFTV2Zx2Co.html Though I built the track upon recorded improvisations and learnt everything about trailer music from the evenant trailer course.
