That’s called a “mode”. There’s a mode for every time you play the major scale starting on a note different than the 1. Eg, the harmonic minor scale is actually the major scale starting on the 6. So A minor is actually c major, but starting on the 6, rather than the 1.
Starting on the IV is not really a mode, since you can play modes over the IV. It's simply just starting on the IV. Modes are for melody, while the roman numeral system is relative to the harmonic center. @@peadookie
@@peadookie its the nashville number system its not math or modes its just the order of the chord based on its key, once you learn this it makes figuring out songs a lot easier. At least for most pop style stuff ,it starts getting a little complicated when you listen to more complex jazzy stuff. But its an incredibly powerful tool to figure out songs and also to communicate with other musicians in a session or for improvising etc.
I think what I said may have been misinterpreted here. The Nashville number system is exactly what I was using to describe modes, which, yes, are the major scale when starting from another note. It’s a _modality_ of playing the major scale. That’s why you can play a related major scale over Phrygian, for example.
The great thing is that he seems to just have an expert knowledge of music, and specifically guitar, so he just happened to apply that to Polyphia, but it sounds like he could do the same with any band.
My god this was much more interesting than what i thought it'd be. Plus i didnt't realize how much knowledge you had in music before. Very fcking impressive to be so clear, concise while also demonstrating everything in such a little amount of time.
Also, instant sub, your content is densely useful and well structured - 3 minutes cover what other youtubers would stretch to dozens of minutes. Thank you.
Man, this video keeps coming back to my fyp and I don't usually comment but you really need to make this a full song! I see it sounding like something I would listen on repeat.
I can't believe you managed to fit that much clear info into 3 and a half minutes Well done! I've never listened to Polyphia, but that breakdown gave me some wonderdul insight into the guitar!
Useful video added to my collection of other useful guitar stuff. Trying to experiment more with polyphia pop style since i been playing metal for many years
The amount of doors 🚪 you have opened for me, is awesome! Between Polyphia and your teachings, my musical style has completely changed. Even my taste in music. I was just a simple “4 on the floor” metal head. Not anymore. I LOVE metal. But as far as my playing ability, and creativity, I’m so happy with my growth as a player. THANK YOU. 🎸
