Welcome folks! I hope you enjoy this week's video on resume writing and, specifically, the CAREER PROFILE! Let me know what you think and what you need. And, of course, make sure to SUBSCRIBE for weekly videos and Live Office Hours on Thursdays!
Andrew, thank you so much for this video. Would you be able to make a video on follow up etiquette after youve sent a thank you letter after second round interview? Is there a hack to be able to reaffirm your fit to the recruiter without coming off as a stalker?
Hi Andrew, thanks for the video. How would you rephrase your career profile if you were switching careers? All of my experience is in customer service and sales but I want to become a web designer.
I’ve been actively employed for almost 20 years and have created a lot of resumes. With the opportunities that have opened up to me since following your advice I’d marry you!!! I can’t believe how wrong my resumes have been. Just because you have experience doesn’t necessarily mean you get hired. Thank you Andy!!
I had been praying a lot for a job, and one day I landed on your video, even though I'm Spanish speaker I translated everything you said and the template to Spanish and it worked amazingly. I sent this resume to a very important NGO and I was chosen today in less than a week. I had been applying for jobs there for a year and haven't had even an interview and now I have the job I have always wanted. I can't thank you and God enough because it is a miracle.
Harvard Business Review did an article confirming the same resume setup as Andrew based on research. Love your content, it has been very helpful in my job search.
Obviously Jane!! But I must admit I do have Google Project Management Cert. in my LinkedIn headline, and might take it off after watching this video haha
How do you do a resume that looks good when you have no job experience, just graduated last year from high school, and don't even know what skills you have? Writing a resume is rather difficult when you have to sit there and think very hard about what you can do especially when it probably won't help on a resume.
I am no hiring manager, but i would interview Jane over John for sure. I will apply all the tips you've got to offer and give you feedback. I've always cringed when it was time to update my resume but now, im looking forward to it! Thank You Ps: i can see how a well written eyecatching resume can make the interview process a breeze and pow one's worth. You are talented sir...
Huge thanks to you👏👍🏻 I’ve been applying to many jobs on Linkedin but haven’t heard back from any company. I followed your tips and the free resume format you supported and made a totally different cv, then applied to a vacancy that I’m really interested in and I got a notification few hours later that my resume was seen and downloaded by the recruiter😍. I was really amazed and felt my best after that. I hope I’ll get an interview soon. Thank you again!
I would improve your résumé but also switch tactics. Try to avoid submitting your résumé into applicant tracking systems and instead use my boss hunting technique. You can find it on the channel and I also give you some free templates. Good luck!
This video hits the nail on the head! I wish I had watched this when I was transitioning from teaching. It's easy to make these mistakes, but being aware of them can save a lot of time and frustration. Well done!
John's definitely keyword stuffing and doesn't give any indication of who he is, or what he can do. It just says a bunch of words with bullet points. Jane, on the other hand, gets to the point - she says what she does, where she did it, and how successful she was at doing it. Love it. Super helpful Andrew, as always.
I retired from a public safety agency and now I want to apply to a University for an investigators position. The position is not a typical public safety position and my previous job title did not have "investigator" in it, but it was a major function in my job. Can I use the phrase "Internal Affairs Investigator" or "Administrative Investigator" in my career profile to identify who I am even though it wasn't my official job title?
So correct me if I'm wrong: The profile has got to do with the applicant and not the position being applied for. So there's no need to incorporate keywords etc?
Is this is can be used for freshers in campus placements (because here we won't send the resume for interviewers before we will give that at a time when we enter to talk with him) plzz tell me
Thanks for this valuable information. I have over 18 years of experience in engineering. I want to know how to keep my age that is early 50 to increase my chance for an interview. Can I remove my education year and some of my first work experiences? Many thanks
I'm struggling to put my achievements on my resume. I have been a builder for 15 years and have built and worked on over 30+ medium and large projects. There is so much to add that I cannot narrow it down very easily what to put in. I am also using only one page.
Thank you so much! I wonder that I have ever got a job, I have done many things wrong in my resumees. Usually, I have got te job I have really wanted. Let's see now. They deserve to read a wee-made resumee.
Andy - I have come across your videos just over the past week or 2 - And I am hooked on your stuff! I have found your tips just in time as I'm going through a dark place of job hunting and feeling totally beat down as a single mom! You have helped me understand how I've been doing so many things wrong and wasting so much of my time by not focusing on the right things to help me be successful - Thank you for teaching me that! One of the professional "skills" I lack is summarizing/condensing information efficiently - This is such a key skill in any role that I need to work on and I admit it! Your videos have helped me to do just that. My Career Profile section went from 8 sentences (with lots of commas listing "character traits" among other irrelevant information) to now just 4-5 sentences - including 2 significant achievements. It looks so much better already. Now onto revamping the rest of my resume using your tips! Thank you so much for this video!
Andrew, thanks for this nice video. What should I do if I am a IT student myself with multiple industries experience (banking/marketing/tutoring) in the past which wasn't relevant to my future career changes, what should I put it into my Career profile?
SO HELPFUL! Thank you for your work! Do you offer personal resume review and consultation services? I'm sure you're incredibly busy, but I thought I would ask!
Hey ML, I do. I offer an entire job search program and offer resume reviews and coaching as part of that service. Check it out here: www.milewalkacademy.com/p/andrew-lacivita-job-search-boot-camp
Update !! I spent days watching your videos, I have never wrote a resume but I invested over 20 hrs in it Put it this way I was laid off Monday yesterday had a job interview I took your advice on never telling an employer what you want to make and he offered me $7.00 more then I was going to say I needed Thank you so much !!!
I am trying to change my job from nursing to economics where i have acquired a bachelors. I am having challenges to write a career profile for it because the experience i have is different from the job i am targeting
Andy, how would I display the company that I've worked for, for the past 13 years that, has since been acquired by another company for the past 2 years.
Thank you Andrew, I should have watch/discover your video earlier.... even with friend recommendation, I think I screwed up my resume.. never get pass hiring manager... not even interview
Great video, very nice illustrations, this is professionally simplified. The great key points of do's & don'ts. No white space, utilize the prime real estate.
I'm not sure whatever happened to asking nicely, but I'd be happy to tell you that not only do I have a video just for you. I even wrote your profile for you. Search much channel for "college" and watch the video or two. Take the template and off you go.
This is awesome advice and gave me the exact input I needed to prioritize my energies. One question, have you noticed that in general, job posts are very poorly written? They are grammatically awkward, seemingly contradictory in places, verbose, and inconsistent as to who they are looking for?
A lot of the advice on resume writing comes from people who are in the business of writing resumes. I now see that recruiters view resumes very differently. Excellent, as always Andy!
Hi Andrew! If you are a recent college graduate with less than 1 year of professional experience, is it still a good idea to write in the Career Profile how many years you have worked? I was thinking to say something like "2 years of experience in.." to include an internship and part-time job I had in college, and my current full-time position. How can you give an overview of your entire career in the Career Profile when your career has just started?
For career changes, you need to pull forward the capabilities you learned in your past that position you to support the career you want. Check out my career change your playlist for more.
Oh man! I agree with all of this! On the white space thing - work it daily (as an example not picking on that channel) is a huge proponent of it. A lot of people I mentor are confused with some of this information on YT :) any thoughts?
I am finding these videos extremely helpful but regrettably I am still stuck on this section. I have held different types of positions in a number of different organisations (namely Universities) and the opening I'm applying for is a quality assurance role with the government. Should I focus on where I have demonstrated quality assurance in a previous role, even it was nearly 10 years ago?
Andrew- Thank you so much for your advice, I can't thank you enough! Can you tell me what font you are using for the resume template? I love the all uppercase font you are using for the name and career profile. Also, searching for how to make the two horizontal lines in Word with slightly different boldness quality. Thank you again for offering you guidance!
I am a current business owner wanting to get out of business ownership. I have been operating a landscape design and installation company since 2012. Started my company simply because I couldn't find a job so I made one. I have a lot to bring to the table for another firm that is already established in both project management and sales and design but I don't know how to write a resume from my perspective as a business owner. What I have experienced as a business owner is that people like me (business owners) don't follow direction of other companies as well as are a risk of just starting their own thing at some point in the future. This is not my intention and I literally am doing it because I have 6 children and my wife needs security and I need peace from the chaos of business ownership. I want to work for someone else. I would be amazing, but how to portray that, I am clueless. I could use some advice or even an episode on this particular subject. I know it is a need because I am not the only business owner looking at going that direction.
Hi Andrew. I'm applying for senior executive positions this month and after watching your videos I now that I'll be more then ready to get the job. Thanks a lot for all your work in here for us. Best regards, André
I would like to write my own resume in word. What margins should I use?? Is okey to have 2 pages??. Now how can I write 3 different titlesninone company??
Yes, you can have a 2-page resume. In the video description, you download my resume template and you'll get instructions on how to list your employer and titles. You'll also see the size of my suggested margins. Good luck!
Hi Andy I have been following you for some time and I kinda want your expert opinion on a scenario that happened to me recently. This friday, I was at a job interview for my dream job which I unfortunately didn't get. The interviewer wrote me a nice (and relatively long) rejection mail where she explained to me that she thought I was a great fit for the company and that I didn't get the job because another applicant had experience from a former job that made him/her more qualified. I wrote her a classy 'oh well, but thank you for your time' mail and stated that if another opportunity would emerge I would be glad to be back. To my surprise, she replied that I should add her on LinkedIn (which I did) to see all upcoming positions. I should add that during the interview she said that they were currently hiring a lot of new applicants, going from 200 to 400 employees in a few years. I'm not desparetly searching for a job and am thinking about maybe waiting for new positions to open. How are my chances with this company and what would you advise me to do? Best regards, Edwin PS: English is not my native language.
Edwin Ginhabret Edwin, sorry you didn’t get the job but I’m loving this outcome as an opportunity for the future. First, make sure to check out my video on how to get the job after being rejected. I have gotten a few hundred emails from people who’ve gotten hired from that one. Also, send that recruiter an email in exactly 28 days to follow up! Things might have changed especially as we get closer to the end of the year! Good luck with this!
@@andylacivita Do you have some tips on how to write an effective follow up email, and would it eventually be something that you could cover (maybe just briefly) in your 'Year-End Job Search' livestream on Thursday or in an upcoming video? Loving what you do and I can't thank you enough for getting me to the interviewing process in the first place :)
I have 10 years work experience before I became a stay at home mom 6 years ago. I know I have a lot to offer an employer but don’t look good on paper. Any advice?
Hi Anderw! Thank you for the video. Just want to confirm that when we include core competencies in career profile, we can exclude the skills part or not. Also, do you review our resumes? Thank you
Raj, skills are technically part of the core competencies. In this case, I would include them or simply add a second sentence starting with Skills include...On your second question, I do review resumes as part of my job search boot camp. You can check out that program on the www.milewalkacademy.com!
Hi Andrew, I'm checking on your videos so I could revise my resume and cover letter. I have been laid off and trying my luck again. Thanks for all the great tips. More power!
Hi andy. So im a 20 year old college student seriously struggling to find my first job ever. Im trying to find a retail job. I had a week work experience program at a retail store a years ago but that was it. On my resume ive even made sure to use buzzwords and match job descriptions, and wrote down accomplishments of that. I also wrote a career profile at the top. But I have no idea what im doing wrong! Since they are online applications I keep getting emails back saying im unsuccessful. Im so frustrated cause im hardworking person compared to other people who have jobs and dont even care to go! PLEASE tell me what im doing wrong. Ive been so stressed out cause im even available 24/7. Ive used your cover letter template too but nope, absolutely unsuccessful! D:
thanks alot for your efforts to help us sir. im a biomedical engineer with 8 years of experience mainly focused on medical devices maintenance . my achievements does not have a numbers or percentages as the salesmen , how can i describe my achievements in this case. thanks a lot
I am mind blown with all the info your giving out. I’ve worked for 7 years and this will be my first time I’ll be sending out my resume, it feels kind of intimidating tbh so thankful for all your help!
I love the fact that you are not extra you’ll get to the point is refreshing because of the tone of your voice the word you use I really really enjoy your input on how to get a better job with a different skills set you are offering and the different insight. My goal is to get a better job and a reason why I want to a better job is because I am 55 years old and I hadn’t worked in 10 years so I know that is my biggest obstacle is preparing to say something to get me over the 10 year that I had worked so I am hoping that you can give me that kind of insight to accomplish that I went back to college and received a administration assistant degree but I have no experience outside of school. That’s the kind of field. I want to work in. Thank you.
I worked for 18 years at a company for public transportation in NY. I relocated and have been working on something completely different for 7 years. Now I found out a job opening in Transportation. Was wondering if in the resume I should list that job of 18 years first, instead of my present job? After all, that is what they are looking for. what is the advice?
Iam deeply humbled by your technical guidance, I little bit messed up with the content of my cover letter and resume, am pretty equipped now to write a better version. Thank you so much.
Hey Andy, have to say I've been struggling to form this (for me) very new style Resume - so I keep coming back to these videos and all your constant reinforcement is really helping me understand how to translate the language to fit my career and control my narrative. Thank you!
Many people say we should stick to one page, but with the career profile and career highlights, then our experiences with education and others, mine will probably push 2 or 3 pages. Only one page or is multiple fine?
Dear Andrew, Thank you for this informative video. However, I do not have any paid work experience or volunteer experience to write about in my career profile. I am a final-year nursing student who has completed 560 hours of clinical placements in various hospitals and retirement village so far. Could I ask how I then write my career profile in accordance with the circumstances that I am in? Many thanks.
Love your content, Andrew! Is an address necessary if you're applying for remote positions? I didn't have to disclose my address until I was hired in my previous job. Thank you.
I sure am Ray. Send an email to support@milewalk.com. You can also join my boot camp and select the add on service for a one on one session. That’s the most cost effective way to get the 1:1 time. www.milewalkacademy.com/andrew-lacivita-job-search-boot-camp
I always laugh at the end of your videos by how abrupt the ending is... just cut to silence. It's like Big Resume found out about what you were up to and shut you down.
Hello Andrew! Once again thank you very much for your helpful videos! I am trying to get a job a food technology field by combining my knowledge and experience in engineering and hospitality fields, but I do not really understand if in a career profile should be written both job titles Engineer and Senior Chef to show a hiring manager that I have experience in both field.
Tatiana. Would be a good idea to check out my career changer videos to get an idea of what to put in the career profile and throughout your resume if you want to make a change like that.
I have a question for you, I am dyslexic and therefore make spelling mistakes. Should I write that I'm dyslexic? 2. Am I being rejected because of misspellings?
Thank you so much for the very useful information you're providing! What if the work you've done is not in the same career direction you want to transition into? How could your summary be shaped to that?
Hi Andrew, I am currently doing my resume and seeking your help with my career profile as i am a restaurant worker. Thank you and appreciate with your help.
I've been applying for a full-time remote copyeditor position to no avail. (I'm talking about work as an employee, not a freelancer or contractor.) It's been years. I just have no idea what to put on my résumé to get the attention of prospective employers. I'm not sure how to quantify my experience or accomplishments. I'm a part-time freelancer, so work is quite sporadic. That said, I'm afraid my numbers or stats aren't impressive enough to put on my résumé. However, I've worked with a number of best-selling indie authors and coauthored a book on editing tips and advice for writers. I've mentioned all those on my résumé, but employers seem to ignore them. Any tips on putting my experience so far on a positive spin? Thanks so much!

Hello! I have been a musical theatre director, ESL Tutor, and Administrative Assistant. I'm currently applying for an Executive Coordinator position. What do I write as my job ttile in the career profile? Do I use the title of the position I have held the longest, or the title of the position I'm applying for? Most of my work experience has been in administrative assistance, so is that the title I should put down, or do I say I'm an Executive Coordinator becasue that's what I see myself as/and am applying for, and have the qualifications to perform the job?
Silly question: how do I get these lines added under my name and then under each block? You mentioned that we should escape lines but your resume template has it ... hmmm
Can you go over how to write a professional summary when your applying for a position that you don't have experience in? I changed careers last year and have gone into a totally new direction and have taken training programs but don't have the direct employment experience. How would I approach that? Thanks ~
